Television station KFVE will launch the broadcast at 9 p.m. Oct. 18.

Aimed at early risers who go to bed early and a younger core audience who watches The WB network's shows, "K5 News at Nine" will mean new hires for the WB affiliate. They will work alongside news employees at sister station KHNL, the NBC affiliate. Because of the difference in broadcast time, "K5 News at Nine" would not com porting, Fink said, since crews could be in play for any news program, early or late. With the four additional hirings, the news staff for both stations will total 44. "The new anchor may be hired internally or externally," Fink said.

That anchor would normally occupy the K5 desk at 9 p.m. but could report on KHNL newscasts. A weekend anchor, however, could be tapped from the current staff at News 8. Because K5 also televises University of Hawai'i sports events, there would be adjustments to the 9 p.m. newscasts as needed.

The same newsroom as News 8 will be used, but with a separate look and logo. Reach Wayne Harada at 525-8067, wharadahonolulu advertiser.com, or fax 525-8055. pete with KHNL's broadcasts. John Fink, general manager of KFVE The Home and KHNL said the organization will add four news positions, including a 9 p.m. anchor.

"We feel there is a cry out there for earlier news, to wrap out the night earlier than 10 o'clock," Fink said. A producer, reporter, anchor and editor-photographer will be hired for the K5 staff and will report to news director Sue Levine, who oversees coverage on News 8's newscasts at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. "K5 News at Nine" will be the only local newscast at 9 p.m. Before the channel became a WB affiliate, it broadcast a 9 p.m. news program, but that ended in 1996.

John A. Adversalo, 48, and Daniel K. Rosario, 42, each face a maximum penalty of two years in jail and $4,000 in fines when they are sentenced in November. Circuit Judge Steven Aim said he is inclined to grant deferrals that would allow the defendants to clear their criminal records within a few years, but that he would consider sentencing each to 10 days in jail.

Aim declined to allow them to plead no contest to the charges, and insisted they plead guilty or not guilty. Adversalo was charged with two counts of making campaign contributions under a false name. Rosario was charged with one false name count and one count of exceeding the legal donation limit of $4,000 per donor in a mayoral race. Deputy prosecutor Randal Lee said the illicit donations were made before 2001, but he declined to specify the amounts. Adversalo is president of Architects Pacific, and Rosario is an independent contractor.

The defendants and their attorneys declined to comment while sentencing is pending. Over the past two years, prosecutors have charged more than two dozen defendants with making illegal campaign donations, mostly to Harris. Harris has not been charged with wrongdoing. OHA officials worried that the state agency would have to return the grant money but learned last spring that the federal money could stay in the fund. The fund has provided 367 loans to business owners with Native Hawaiian ancestry. For more information, call 594-1888. Reach Vicki Viotti at 525-8053 or vviottihonoluluadvertiser to help the neediest Hawaiians who otherwise might not qualify for business financing, Namu'o said.

The action was taken after a consultation with Quanah Cross-land Stamps, commissioner of the federal Administration for Native Americans, which is the agency that contributed about $10 million in grants toward the fund. Stamps was in town last week to attend the Native Hawaiian Conference, sponsored by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement. The OHA board of trustees has eliminated a requirement that applicants to the $20 million Native Hawaiian Revolving Loan Fund first be turned down by two other lending institutions. The need to present two letters of denial discouraged many potential applicants, said OHA administrator Clyde Namu'o. The board also hoped to underscore its new open-door policy by officially redefining the fund as "lender of first choice," another provision of a motion approved last week The revolving loan fund had been previously designated as a "lender of last resort" in an effort 449 RT 449 RT Call for Island Overnighters $AOQ AirCarRoom for 2 fr.
