Troop 70 Camps Out WOOD RlVEft Twelve members of Boy Scout troop 70 and their scoutmaster, Herbert Ball; participated in an all-day outing In a woods owned by Herman Wil- kenlng, east of Fosterburg, Saturday. Requirements No. 3 of the Adventure Trail were passed by Paul Louden, Bob Hopper, Larry Lowery, Mike Mitchell, Don Ball, Jack Bill Roberson and Bob Stouffer. Series two requirements, were passed by Jimmy Hord, John Fuhr, John Wilhlte and Tom Cahoon. The boys now have enough wood to construct a 20-foot signal tower In the woods.

WCTU To Furnish Hospital Room WOOD RIVER One hundred dollars, which will partly furnish a single room in the Wood River township hospital, was donated by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, at a meeting at the home of Mrs. Lucy Smith of 455 Whitelaw avenue, Friday. A similar amount which will allow the group to completely furnish the room, will be raised prior to open- Ing the hospital this spring. Mrs. Emma Henry was in charge of the devotionals and Mrs.

Louella Darling and Mrs. Maude Whiteman presented talks concerning the temperance work. After the business meeting, Mrs. auctioneer presided at a white elephant the proceeds of which was nine dollars. Mrs.

Bert Hill, soldier and sailor chairman, announced that the next meeting will be an all-day affair and the ladies will tack carpet rags to be to veterans hospitals. Anyone having rags -to donate is requested to contact -Mrs. Hill. Mrs. Russell Mourning assisted Mrs.

Tuesday, was Virgil Patterson, Route 1, East Alton, said by his father to have lost four teeth as a result of the mishap. Frl. and Crutadei" plus Struck" Wood River Lions Shown Movie WOOD RIVER, Jan. film, "A Letter from America," which set forth the benefits of free enterprise and the American way of living, was shown to members of the Lions club at the regular luncheon meeting of the group at the Fiesta, cafe, Tuesday noon.

The non-co'mmerclal film, presented by R. A. Majors, district representative of the Good Year Tire'and Rubber portrayed by means of a letter from a naturalized citizen to a relative in a foreign country, the fact that while Americans are inclined to brag about their nation, they really have something to substantiate their boasts. It depicted the opportunities afforded American workmen and emphasized the magnitude of our Industrial empires, contrasting conditions here with European systems. Prior to the featured film, three representatives of the American Tobacco Co.

showed a film depl- ing with methods of growing and curing tobaccos. Majors-was introduced by Leonard Schmidt, who was introduced by Newell Allen, program chairman. The American Tobacco men were introduced by Clarence Decker, president of the club. Geroge Urban and Milo Gingrich were received into the Lions club and R. A.

"Dick" Richards received a membership pin, Richards was admitted to the club several weeks ago. Guests at the meeting included W. G. Felty and L. C.

Kaltenbach, guests of Leonard Schmidt. Weekend Institute WOOD RIVER Members of the local Methodist Youth Fellowship arc to attend a weekend institute at the East Alton Methodist church beginning at 7:30 p. Friday. Classes will convene at 9:30 a. m.

and 1 p. Saturday. Those attending are requested to bring a sack lunch. A drink will be furnished by the East Alton organization. At 1:45 p.

Saturday, the Rev. Farcll D. Jenkins of the St. Paul Methodist church of East St. Louis will bring an evangelistic message to close the institute.

This meeting will take the place of the regular monthly meeting of the AHon-Ed- wardsville Methodist Youth Fellowship. Executive Board Meeting WOOD RIVER The Executive Board of the Lorena Avenue Parent-Teachers Association will meet at the Washington school at 7 p. Thursday. Plans will be made for the spring activities and lor the Dad's Night to be observed at the regular meeting of the organization, Tuesday. Leadership training Group WOOD RIVER The Rev.

L. B. Walkington of the East Alton Methodist church is dean and Mr. Frank Peterson of the Main Street Methodist church, Alton, is secretary and of the Alton-Edwardsville Leadership Training group which met for the first of six consecutive meetings at the Methodist church, 6th and Lorena avenue, Monday. All Sunday School teachers and members of the Alton-Edwarclsville group of Methodist churches are invited to attend the classes.

The class titles and their instructors include: "Plans ot the church for Kindergarten children" by Mrs. V. Brazier of E. Alton, "Guiding Junior children in Christian growth" by Mrs. Charles Barnelt of Alton Main Street church, "Missionary Education of Youths" by Mrs.

G. C. Callahan of Immanuel church of Edwardsville and "Life of Jesus" by the Rev. R. A.

Lippman of Wood River Methodist church. The Rev. D. C. Williams of the Immanuel church of Edwardsville is presenting a course of the combined group entitled "Bible Manners and Customs." The Wood River group led in the attendance, Monday, with 18 of the 64 students, teachers and officers present.

Carrie Dollar, former president of the National Baptist Youth Fellowship, national youth organization of the Northern Baptist Convention, will deliver the principal address at a youth clinic and banquet, which will be attended by pastors and church leaders of this area at the First Baptist Church. 300 Lorena, Thursday afternoon and evening. The speaker was a Baptist Youth Fellowship delegate to Baptist World Conference of Christian Youth In Oslo, Norway, July, 1947 and spoke at the Baptist World Congress In Copenhagen, Denmark, the same year.

She Is, at present, youth representative on the council of finance and promotion Of the Northern Baptist, Convention. The rally is sponsored by the Youth committee, Department of Christian Education and the Baptist Youth Fellowship. Also in attendance at the meeting will be the Rev. Lee Roth, director of Christian Education for the Con Illinois Baptist Slate Convention. Activity will be at 4:30 p.

Thursday with Baptist Youth Fellowship, which will be followed with a banquet at 6 o'clock and the youth rally at 7:30, at which time Miss Dollar will speak. T. B. Tests WOOD first tuberculosis case-finding survey of its kind in this state was concluded today with testing at Edison and Brushy Grove schools, Roxana; South Roxana end Wanda. While results of the survey are yet to be ascertained by Dr.

Norman J. Rose, district health superintendent, indications point to a high percentage of children of elementary school age having taken the tests. Surveys were made at East Alton Monday and at Wood River and Hartford, Tuesday. Physicians residing in Wood River township, assisted by various public health nurses, administered the tests. The program was sponsored by the Wood Rivor Social Planning Council in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Close follow-up work will be done in the case of each positive reaction. Wood River Notes WOOD RIVER Mrs. Rosa Havelka of 904 Acton avenue and Mrs. Waller Strohbeck of 906 Ac- Ion avenue received word of the death of their brolher and uncle, Houslon Branson, at Washinglon, Tuesday. Funeral plans are incomplete.

Mrs. Hubert Switzer, who underwent a major operation at Alton Memorial hospital, Tuesday, is a sister of Mrs. D. E. Colborn of 824 Madison avenue.

Mrs. Switzer is being cared for by her mother, Mrs. Ola Easton, who resides at the Colborn home. Mrs. E.

A. Hoppert and Mrs. Robert Owen excelled at cards and were awarded prizes. Additional guests included Mrs. C.

Usually the organization gives presents to Wood Rlvor women located In the Madison County Tuberculosis San- itorium, but this; year no local women were convalescing in that institution.

A girls' trio from East Alton- Wood River Community High School, composed of Marjorie Starkey, Joyce Wells and Pattty Mitchell, accompanied by Miss Peggy Ausburg, vqcalized several numbers. Mrs. George Strasser and Mrs. V. Schmuck were received into the club as new members.

The date was set tentatively nt February 22. Potted plants, candy and grocery baskets were taken to seven local shut-ins, and GO pounds of candy was distributed among hospitalized veterans at Alton and Edwardsville, It was reported. Injured At School Van Meter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Van Meter, was injured at, school Tuesday during the noon hour.

According to his mother, the gash on the back of his head required several stitches to close. White Elephant Sale BETHALTO A white elephant sale will be featured as the social part of the Woman's Club meeting at 7:30 p. m. Friday at the Town Hall. Members are to have all articles wrapped and the value is to be no less than 75 cents.

The sale is a project of the committee on volunteer service to veterans, which is headed by Mrs. E. Lcnington. She states that the proceeds of the sale will be sent to the Veterans Home at Marion, one of the projects of the Federated Woman's Clubs of Illinois. Hostesses at Friday night's meeting will be Mrs.

Ralph Painter and Mrs. George Stuck.
