One of the 442nd's best known missions was its rescue of "the Lost Battalion" a brutal, three-day battle in which it suffered hundreds of casualties. Kashino was born in Honolulu but spent most of his life after World War II in Seattle as a car dealer. During World War II, Kashino served in Company I and won the Silver Star, Bronze and the Purple Heart with Silver Oak Leaf.

"Even the Hawaii guys, they bow to him," Shimamura said. Kashino was the chairman of the 1964 Nisei Veterans Reunion in Seattle. He returned to Hawaii in 1981 for a veterans reunion. Kashino is survived by his wife, Louise, and three daughters, Kristine Hiraoka, Debra McQuilken and Beverly Kashino. Services were held in Seattle.
