The original Splash, which ran for several years at the Riviera, got very high marks around town and was a per-renially popular production show.

Splash II is an update of the original, and should be a very good possibility to check out if you're headed towards Vegas any time soon. Billed as an "aquacade of music," the show is fast-paced and high energy, full of fountains, screens, water-fulls, an ice rink and a huge on-stage aquarium stocked with showgirl mermaids. It runs seven days a week. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. (a family show that several people have recommended to ingly out over the audience).

And the alien spacecraft landing in the "Intcrgalactic Circus of Wonders segment is a special effects show stopper (visualize the alien spacecraft landing in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" come to life -really come to life right in front of you). And I'm positive they've got the best sound system and light show anywhere in Vegas right now. But I found their story line a little ho-hum (I kept waiting for more of those great special effects). 1 talked to a lot of entertainment watchers in Vegas about this show and they thought (as I do) that as time goes by the production will eventually find its feet, and then you might really see something. Squeaky clean, and kids will certainly be impressed.

The newest theater (table seating) in town. I did, and I wasn't. "Forever Plaid" is an exquisite little off-Broadway musical revue that has found a home at the Flamingo Hilton's 200-seat Bugsy's Celebrity Theatre. It's the story of a '50's era vocal group that was just getting their act together (not to mention some custom-made plaid tuxedos) when they were killed in a car crash. But through the "Going Vegas." pr The Bank Choice Power of Harmony and the Expanding Holes in the Ozone Layer, they get to come back for one last big performance.

And what a performance it is. Delicately choreographed and beautifully written (keep your eye on the piano player), the little lounge show is a true sleeper. All I can say is that if you've ever seen "The Ed Sullivan Show," don't miss "Forever Plaid." It's almost 30 songs ranging from "Papa Loves Mambo" to Beatles tunes that have been harmonized directly into Perry Como heaven. And don't let the well-used look of the showroom put you off, either. Once you get into the show, you'll realize it's the perfect venue for a quartet of guys who just want to sing the ultimate rendition of "Day-O." Clean as a whistle, but the humor might go over children's heads (you had to grow up with Ed Sullivan to appreciate a lot of the jokes).
