"From what I've seen of the computer, a win over No. 4 is bigger than a win over unranked. If it doesn't work out, it just doesn't workout." Butch Davis, coach of No. 2 Miami: They say we had to win by 20, and we did that," Davis said after Saturday's 26-0 victory at Syracuse.

"Every team we've played has had a winning record." The Hurricanes beat Florida State, 27-24, Oct. 7. They play Boston College Saturday. "You never go out there and try to toentionally hurt anybody, especially as bad as Blake got hurt," Johnstone said. "You don't wish that on anybody." Suddenly, the Saints were reeling. Onto the field trotted second-year quarterback Aaron Brooks, who was acquired in a preseason trade with Green Bay and had never thrown a pass in an NFL game.

In an attempt to get Brooks comfortable, the Saints called a handful of running plays. Woodson intercepted his first pass attempt His second attempt found receiver Willie Jackson on a beautifully timed route, and Jackson took advantage of breakdowns in Oakland's secondary to turn the play into a 53-yard touchdown. Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon was sacked a season-high five times and was under constant pressure with blitzes from every angle. Working against the No. 3 defense in the NFL, Gannon completed 14 of 21 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

"He made some unreal plays," said Saints linebacker Keith Mitchell "We had him sewn up a few times and he just got out of it He was really on today." It wasn't until the fourth when Tim Brown and Zack Crockett scored touchdowns that the Raiders exhaled. The mood in their locker room was one part excitement, two parts relief. "They're exhausted right now," rasped Coach Jon Gruden, who lost his voice trying to scream over the din of the packed-to-the-rafters Superdome. "We've got a lot of sore bodies in there." One of the walking wounded, running back Tyrone Wheatley, wasn't even able to suit up.

He missed his second consecutive game and probably will sit out Sunday's home game against Atlanta. Filling in for him was Crockett, a 240-pound bruiser who, until this season, was only modestly effective as a short-yardage runner. Yesterday, Crockett was a Clydesdale. He didn't have any pretty runs in gaining 44 yards in 17 carries, but he found holes when he had to. And his pair of 6-yard touchdown runs were just the tonic for a team that couldn't establish the passing game.

Said Gruden: "Zack was a hammer today." Meanwhile, Blake got nailed. He was knocked out of the game and almost certainly the season when he was dragged down from behind by defensive end Lance Johnstone. Dec. 20 Mobile Alabama Bowl Dec. 21 Las Vegas Bowl Dec.
