The students and their teach ers journeyed from Port St. Joe, Highland View and Wewa hitchka for a day of instructions in fire prevention, forest man a and wildlife conservation.

Forestry Day was initiated in 1950 and is now jointly sponsored by the Gulf County Forest Fire Prevention Committee, St, Joe Paper Company, The Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission and Florida Division of Forestry. Six stations were used in a county fair system of instruction. Instructors were provided by the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission and Florida Division of Forestry At the first station the students climbed the fire tower to learn how firei are detected, located and crews despatched to suppress them. Fire control dispatcher Murphy and Forest Ranger Amsie Suggs manned this station. Lieutenant Art Runnels of the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission manned station No.2.

He discussed with' the children the effects of environmental pollution upon fish and wildlife and ultimately on people. His display included fishing pictures, as well as charts, to support his points on pollution. Station No. 3 was the Smokey Bear Theatre, where the chuV dren were shown movies by i Rangers R. J.

Brown and Gerald Blackwell. Ralph J. Kdenfield discussed forest management at station 4. Edenfield demonstrated methods of measuring tree height, diameter and growth, as well as hand planting of seedlings. Station No.5 was manned by Rangers John Redman and Archie Marshall.

They showed the students the equipment used in wildfire suppression and discussed the techniques employed. Tractors, p'ows, handtools and backfire torches were covered. Station 6 was manned by Ranger Milton Strength of the Division of Forestry. The importance of forest fire prevention was stressed here. The causes of wildfire and their effects were explained.

"Each year thero are a few fires in Gulf County which are deliberately set," said Strength, "but many of our fires are caused by human carelessness." y-four sixth graders from Highland View School visited the Forestry Work Center on Thursday, May 11, along with their teacher, Donald Whine. On Friday Mrs. Madge Sent mes, reported to be the teacher who has been coming to White City for this occassion for the longest, brought 54 sixth graders from Wewahitchka. Tuesday brought the largest group with 71 students from Port St. Joe, accompanied by their teachers, Frank W.

Barnes and Mrs. Gwen Ingram. Another group of 52 students from Port St. Joe attended on Wednesday, May 10, accompanied by teachers Mrs. Virginia Harrison and Billy Barlow.
