Tribune 11 Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1987 Julia Williamson is one of the returnees for North western's fourth-ranked golf team (Tribune file photo) Competition keen in county golf By Brett Bowman Tribune sportswriter Girls golf competition in Howard County can be summed in two words this season highly competitive. The reason for the strong statement is the county boasts two top-20 teams in Northwestern, ranked fourth in the coaches poll released today, and Kokomo, which is llth. Taylor hopes to remain competitive under new coach George Phares, despite the loss of all-stater Sharon Humphrey. Northwestern Lady Tigers' coach Lynda Klein has a strong nucleus to build her team around.

Klein returns all five players from last year's team that finished 10th in the state. Back is Susie Klein, Crissy Klein, Abby Kaufman, Julia Williamson andKathyShelton. Darcy Draeger will provide Klein with some depth this fall. "Darcy is a very dependable sixth player," said Klein. "She can step in and do a good job for us if we need her." Klein doesn't feel the added pressure of being ranked so highly is hurting her If anything, she feelslike it is making the Lady Tigers even better.

"We love it (the ranking)," said Klein. "The one thing that the ranking is doing is making the girls practice that much harder so they won't go out on the course andembarass themselves." The team goals are simple. "We would really like to win our sectional," Klein said. "I think we can get out of our sectional, but it would really be great to win it. Also, we would love to finish in the top five in the state." Kokomo Dave Pettay has a nice problem on his hands with his Lady Wildkats.

With the play of his team thus far, he only has two girls Kelly Wells and Catherine Nelson who have locked themselves into a varsity position. The other three varsity slots are "up in the air" right now, according to Pettay. Nine girls are vying for the re- maining three slots. Included in the battle are Annette Basham, Maria McElhone, Shawn DeSchamps, Pawn DeSchamps, Tish Doak, Julie Cord, Steph Butler, Heather Ashburn and Andi Jackson. Cord injured her hand, but is rounding back into form now, according to Pettay.

Pettay isn't sure his Lady Kats are deserving of their top-20 status, at least not this early. 'Tin surprised there aren't 20 teams in the state who are better than we are," said Pettay. "I guess that as a whole, the teams in the state must be down a little bit. Right now this team just isn't playing up to its full potential. "We dp have a lot of internal competition and I'm not sure if that isn't the reason that some of the girls scores are high," Pettay continued.

"I think the girls are thinking that if they mess up at varsity that they will be brought down and it's adding some extra pressure. I'm hoping that at the end of the season it (competition) will make us a better team." Taylor First-year coach Phares has the tough task of replacing Humphrey, but welcomes three seniors he hopes will make the job 4 little easier. Jenni Eads, Kim Taylor and Lil Arakelian will team with junior Cyndi Pickett and sophomore Laura Taylor to comprise the varsity. Others who will probably see some varsity playing time include freshman Julie Smith, sophomore Cindy Boles and junior Anissa Ettinger. "We are going to have a tough schedule," said Phares.

"Looking at our schedule we play the 1st-, 4th-, 9th-, 17th- and 19th-ranked teams in the state, in addition to some other pretty tough teams down the road. It's really hard to predict just how we'll finish up. "Our biggest problem is that in our matches up to this point we haven't had a girl break 50 yet," said Phares. We can't hope to win with high scores like thai, but I think that the girls are really making progress and working hard." Owners, players are talking WASHINGTON (AP) The NFL Players Association and the league's owners have agreed to finally resume negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, spurred on by the NFLPA announcement of a confidential strike deadline. Hours before the current five-year contract expired at midnight, the union's nine-man executive committee on Monday set a deadline for a walkout but would not reveal the date.

Upshaw said the committee would recommend the strike deadline date to the full board of player representatives Sept. 8 in Washington. Cardinals, Reds head wn opposite paths By The Associated Press The St. Louis Cardinals have been very good this year. And after John Tudor's latest effort, it appears they will be even better in September.

Tudor pitched eight shutout innings as St. Louis beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 Monday night for the Cardinals' sixth straight victory. The Reds, third in the National League West, have dropped nine of their last 10 games and trail San Francisco by six games. Tudor, 5-2, allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four in his seventh start since coming off the disabled list. Todd Worrell got the final three outs for the first- place Cardinals, allowing one hit.

"I've still got a little ways to go," Tudor said. "I'm still not getting the outside part of the plate the way I'd like to, but I am making better pitches." The Cardinals at 79-51 lead the second-place New York Mets by 5V-2 games and Montreal by six games heading into the final six weeks of the season. The Cardinals' last three games of the year (Oct. 2-4) are at home against the Mets. Tudor sustained a broken bone in his right knee in a freak accident when New York catcher Barry Lyons crashed into him in the St.

Louis dugout during a game April 19. The pitcher was sidelined until July 30. In his six previous starts since coming off the DL, Tudor had not pitched more than 6 2-3 innings. Tudor didn't have a chance for his first complete game of the season because his arm stiffened. "He made 109 pitches and he said he was getting tired," St.

Louis Manager Whitey Herzog said. "Tonight, he (Tudor) probably threw the ball better than he did last year." Tudor was acquired from Pittsburgh prior to the 1985 season and went 21-8 while helping the Cards win the NL pennant. Last year, he slipped to 13-7 and had a sore arm late in the season. Jack Trudeau is cast back into the starting spotlight for the 2nd straight season due to a Gary Hogeboom injury (Tribune file photo) Trudeau says he's changed INDIANAPOLIS (AP) For the second straight year, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jack Trudeau has become the No.l signal caller because of starting quarterback Gary Hogeboom's injury. Trudeau, who entered the Colts' 1986 huddle as a frightened rookie with little confidence and even less knowledge, says he's a changed man, with a more combative, self-assured and gung-ho attitude.

And this time, Trudeau said, there will be no hesitancy "about climbing somebody's clock when he screws up." "That's part of being a quarterback, you know," said Trudeau, a second-year player from Illinois. "You have to be more than just a guy who calls plays and walks to the line of scrimmage. "I'm no seven-year vet, but when I say something, I hope it has meaning. I'm going to be more vocal, more outgoing in running this offense. I ha veto be." That's because on Saturday night, in a 17-6 preseason victory over Houston, Hogeboom suffered a damaged ligament in his left thumb late in the Colts' opening drive.

Hogeboom underwent surgery Monday and will be sidelined six to eight weeks. The earliest return date for the eight-year veteran would appear to be Oct. 18, when the Colts travel to Pittsburgh. The quarterback is scheduled to begin rehabilitation in the next few days, Colts' orthopedic surgeon Arthur C. Rettig said after performing the operation.

The development placed Trudeau right back on the hotseat, not unlike last season when he was an 11-time starter after Hogeboom suffered a shoulder separation. Trudeau wound up an 11-time loser before Hogeboom returned to lead the Colts to three season-ending victories. "The way things ended last year," said Trudeau, "no matter what anybody says, a lot of people looked at it as being my fault. I really felt I needed something to help myself in everybody's eyes, including those of my teammates." Indianapolis Colts Coach Ron Meyer wants to add one or two players to the roster. The roster was reduced Monday as the Colts waived 11 players.

Meyer said he may announce an additional player move or two within the next two days to make room for a running back or perhaps a nose tackle. ''I want some he said. "I'm looking for a running The Colts have lost running back Owen Gill for at least four weeks with a broken leg. The injury left the Colts with only three healthy running backs Albert Bentley, George Wonsley and rookie David Adams. Free agent Greg Allen was among those waived Monday.

The Colts suffered a number of nicks and bruises in Saturday's preseason victory over the Houston Oilers. Besides the injury to Gill, quarterback Gary Hogeboom required surgery Monday after suffering a detached ligament in his left thumb. He will be out six to eight weeks. Meyer said defensive end Donnell Thompson suffered a severely sprained lower back and had trouble getting out of bed Monday morning. The coach said Thompson's status is day to day.

To reach the 60-man roster limit, the Colts cut Allen, defensive end Jim Reynosa, an llth-round draft pick out of Arizona State, and nine other free agents. Also released were running back safeties Mike Prior and Pat Ballage, linebackers Brian Bulluck and Ed Grimsley, defensive back Bryant Jones, wide receivers Dameon Reilly and Richard Estell, center Travis Simpson and tight end Mark Walczak. Reilly and Ballage originally were signed as free agents last year. The others were signed this year. Mete Padres 5 Howard Johnson led off the top of the 10th inning with his 33rd home run to lift Mew York over San Diego.

Johnson homered on a 1-1 pitch from reliever Keith Comstock, 2-1. Jesse Orosco, 3-7, worked 2 2-3 of hitless relief for the victory and Roger McDowell got the last out for his 22nd save, equaling his total of last season. The Mets trailed 5-1 after seven innings, but rallied for four unearned runs in the eighth on consecutive triples by Rafael Santana and Mookie Wilson and a pair of errors. Giants 5, Expos 0 Dave Dravecky pitched a five- hitter for his third shutout of the season and Kevin Mitchell and Candy Maldonado hit home runs as San Francisco beat Montreal at Candlestick Park. Cubs 4, Astros 3 Ryne Sandberg's first-inning home run established a single- season Chicago record for homers and the Cubs defeated host Houston, sending the Astros to their season-high sixth straight loss.

Sandberg's home run, his 15th, gave the Cubs 183 for the season. Chicago's previous record of 182 was set in 1958. The NL record for a 162-game season is 207 set in 1966 by Atlanta. Chicago rookie Les Lancater, 5-1, allowed two runs and six hits in 7 1-3 innings. Lee Smith pitched the final 1 2-3 for his 32nd save.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 2 Shane Rawley improved his lifetime record against Los Angeles to 9-0 and Mike Schmidt hit his 523rd home run as visiting Philadelphia defeated Los Angeles, the Dodgers' fifth straight loss. Braves 3 Mike Dunne pitched a six-hitter and rookie Jose Lind hit a two-run triple as Pittsburgh beat visiting Atlanta for the Pirates' seventh straight victory. Win wasn't in cards for Bears CHICAGO (AP) Somehow, someway, the Cardinals always get those Bears. St. Louis, benefiting from three turnovers and a "Hail Mary" pass that landed in the hands of Don Holmes, defeated the Chicago Bears 20-16 Monday night in an exhibition game.

"We've got a lot of work to do before we meet the world champions," said Bears Coach Mike Ditka, whose team won Super Bowl XX and will open the regular season Sept. 14 against the New York Giants, winners of Super Bowl XXI. His record stands at 0-6 in exhibition play and 0-2 in regular season competition against the Cardinals. Neil Lomax' 13-yard touchdown pass to Troy Johnson in the first quarter gave the Cardinals a 6-0 lead. Late in the first half, quarterback Mike Tomczak drove the Bears to a first down on the Cardinal one-yard line. -IardS Possession StL 20 31-131 1(7 27 18 35 1 3-J9 7 34 J-l 11-69 25:49 Chi 26 30-141 197 26 21-48 1 3-35 4-36 2-2 4-35 34:11 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS Louis, Mitchell 13-60, Wolfley 9-34, Swarn 3-25, Sargent 1-9, McAdoo 3-6, Sikahema 12, Bruno 1 (minus 5). Chicago, Butler 52. But Matt Suhey fumbled on the next play and the Cardinals, unable to move, gave up a safety in order to get a free kick. The Bears came right back and attempted a 36-yard field goal, but it was blocked by Lenny Smith and recovered by Niko Noga on the Chicago 38 with three seconds left in the half. Instead of going for a field goal, the Cardinals tried a "Hail Mary" pass by Lomax. The ball bounded off Bear defenders Reggie Phillips and Otis Wilson and into the hands of Holmes for a touchdown.

The outcome left both teams with 2-1 exhibition records with one game left before the start of the regular season.
