Miami is No. 1 in coaches' poll Associated Press Miami, college football's defending national champion, was voted No. 1 in the USA TodayESPN coaches preseason poll released yesterday.

The Associated Press media preseason poll will be released Aug. 10. The Hurricanes, who completed a 12-0 season with a 37-14 win over Nebraska in the Rose Bowl, easily outdistanced No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Oklahoma in voting by 61 head coaches.

Miami had 34 first-place votes and 1,444 points. Texas (11-2) had nine first-place votes and 1,399 points, edging Big 12 rival Oklahoma (11-2) by two points. The Sooners had 11 first-place votes and 1,397 points. Rounding out the top 10: Florida State, Tennessee, Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, Washington and Michigan. The University of Hawai'i was 47th with 14 points.

Other Western Athletic Conference teams receiving votes were Fresno State (42), Boise State (7) and Louisiana Tech (1). Washington State, led by former St. Louis School quarterback Jason Gesser, is ranked No. 14. -A By Ferd Lewis Advertiser Staff Writer University of Hawai'i athletic director Herman Frazier yesterday pledged to reach out to the school's 450 athletes and be responsive to their fans.

Frazier, who yesterday arrived on campus to take over for the retiring Hugh Yoshi-da, said he will be a regular visitor to teams' practices and games immediately. He said this month he plans to attend early meetings of the Warrior football and Rainbow Wahine volleyball teams. Behind the strength of its men, Hui Lanakila is expected to make an impact at tomorrow's Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship Regatta at HiloBay. But based on the overall strength of other clubs, Hui Lanakila is not expected to win a state championship trophy. "Because of the scoring system, it's going to be hard for us to stay with some of the other teams," said Hui Lanakila head coach Leighton Look. "We don't have the kids and the women that some other clubs have. But we're still going out there to win.

We're going to do what ever we can to score points." More than 50 clubs from around the state are scheduled to compete in the daylong regatta. Hui Lanakila is See PADDUNG, D4 on with a 23-game win streak, it is not among the Fab 50, but is listed at No. 16 in the West. The magazine cites St. Louis ahead of Kahuku because the Crusaders have more returning starters.

Until Martinez is cleared, he is prohibited from enrolling at UH or practicing with the Warriors. As a result, Martinez will not report to UH Monday, the first day of meetings for Warrior newcomers.
