Morihara (D-Upcountry, Pu'unene) has served in the Legislature since 1990. "Family obligations require me to forgo re-election this year," Morihara said. He has played important roles in shaping laws to bring autonomy to the University of Hawaii system and crafting legislation to bring more high-technology companies to the state. During his tenure he has served as chairman of the Higher Education and Agriculture committees. Morihara was one of the "best and brightest" lawmakers and will be missed, said House Speaker Calvin Say.

Marijuana raiders net 14,070 plants HILO, Hawaii Big Island police reported yesterday that they seized 14,070 marijuana plants in another three-day series of raids in Puna and Hilo. The operation targeted 12 neighborhoods. There were no arrests. Hawaii County police were supported by federal and state agents as well as police from Maui County and Honolulu.

The marijuana seized ranged from seedlings to 5-foot plants. The ongoing raids are partially financed by Drug Enforcement Administration grants. Drive next week seeks school items A school supplies drive for Hawaii's underprivileged children will be held at Tamarind Park from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday. This year, it's estimated that more than 25,000 children will need school supplies.

Last year, the "Ready to Learn" school supplies drive provided more than 25,000 children with school supplies. Items needed are: three-ring binders (2-inch), marble composition tablets, colored markers, crayons (24-count), folder paper, glue (4 pencils, pens, portfolio with pockets, 12-inch rulers, scissors and spiral notebooks. Money donations will be accepted at the drive as well as at any First Hawaiian Bank or American Savings Bank from Thursday to July 15. Supplies may also be dropped off at any fire station from June 19 to July 2. Ready to Learn is a partnership between Sen.

Daniel Inouye, his wife, Maggie, and Helping Hands Hawaii, a nonprofit organization. Inouye, Schools Superintendent Paul LeMahieu and others will be at the drive.
