Diana, 36, often described as the most famous woman in the world, died at 4 a.m. (4 p.m. Hawaii time) after going into cardiac arrest, doctors said.

Her life ended the same way she spent nearly all of her adulthood: being pursued by aggressive paparazzi, the photographers who constantly tailed her. The Mercedes sedan she was riding smashed against a wall at 60 mph in a narrow tunnel along the Seine River at the Pont de l'Alma bridge in central Paris. The force of the crash crumpled the front of the car and crushed its roof. Police arrested five photographers at the scene. French radio reported that some of the photographers took pictures before help arrived.

Diana and Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, separated in 1992 after 11 years of marriage. They divorced last year. The couple had two sons, Prince William, 15, and Prince Harry, 12. Diana and Fayed, 42, who had been carrying on a high-profile romance in recent weeks, had been vacationing on the Mediterranean, and Diana had been scheduled to return to London today. At the accident scene, Colm Pierce, a photographer for the British newspaper the Daily Mirror, said the couple had eaten dinner at the Hotel Ritz.

They left through a back entrance to avoid the 30 or so photographers waiting for them in front, and abandoned their own car in favor of the Mercedes apparently owned by the hotel. The driver of the car also was killed. The only survivor of the crash as of last night was a bodyguard, who was in serious condition. Fayed was Diana's first known companion since her divorce. it 4 that smashed into a tunnel wall along the Paparazzi They're hungry and fearless, and they'll do anything for a picture.
