Think there's too much violence on TV? Wait until you see "Brooklyn South." A police drama out of the same creative stable as "NYPD Blue," "Brooklyn South" will be a lightning rod for the violence debate when it debuts this fall on CBS. The first 10 minutes of the pilot are brutal and riveting. A crack-fueled gunman starts killing people in front of a police station, and the action takes off from there, leaving a trail of bodies.

Bystanders fall like cutouts in a carny shooting gallery. A sniper blows off the top of a cop's head. The gunman who started it all is fatally wounded and an irate cop kicks his dying body in rage. If that upsets some people, supervising producer Bill Clark says, tough that's life. "It's based on a true incident, it accurately shows how such a situation would go down," Clark says.

"Police work is very confrontational. People cops deal with get mad. People are often drunk or on drugs. That can develop into an incident that becomes a political issue. That's how it is." It would be easy to dismiss what Clark says as Hollywood hype a producer trying to justify a shocking ratings grabber.

But for 25 years Clark carried a badge in New York City; most of those years it was a gold homicide detective's shield. He retired in 1994 after becoming a writer and consultant on "NYPD Blue," where he is now co-executive producer. A blunt, no-nonsense defender of the beat cop, Clark believes police must sometimes strike back in less-than-politic ways to get the job done. "If you think that when I swore to God to uphold the Constitution of the United States and protect the people of the city of New York, that I wouldn't smack someone who spit in my face, then you got the wrong guy, pal." With talk Tike that, Clark doesn't get invited to address a lot of ACLU meetings. He is an unalloyed straight-tallcer in TV Land, where few people say what they really mean.

"Brooklyn South," which will air Mondays, is the latest evolution of the TV cop show, which has gone from the black-and-white world of "Dragnet's" Joe Friday to the gray-hued venue of "NYPD Blue's" Andy Sipowicz. Life in the fictional precinct of "Brook-lyn South" will ruffle some viewers, but CBS is braced. Network entertainment chief Leslie Moonves says the show will almost cert tainly be the first series to carry the TV-MA (mature audiences) rating. Developed by Steven Bochco's company, "Brooklyn South" has an ensemble cast that includes Jon Tenney Dylan Walsh and James Sikking Street David Milch, who was co-creatotA of "NYPD Blue," is executive producer. on KFVE, starting Aug.

Since KHNL, a former Fox affiliate, became the NBC station a year and a half ago in a swap with KHON (which was the NBC station, but is now a Fox station), its Nielsen news rating has not made significant gains reflecting the powerhouse NBC network programming. Further, KFVE, a UPN affiliate, has been a showcase for University of Hawaii sports events, and the 9 p.m. newscast has been pre-empted at least 25 percent of the time because of the sports coverage, said Fink. "The constraints of putting together a newscast one hour earlier than all our competitors works to our disadvantage in terms of workload," he said.

By Wayne Ilarada Advertiser Entertainment Editor KFVE-TV's 9 p.m. newscasts, produced by sister station NBC Hawaii News8 (KHNL), will end after the Aug. 3 program. John Fink, president and general manager of KHNL, said the newsroom will channel its efforts toward the 10 p.m. newscasts on News 8 instead.

"There has been a noticeable lack of demand from viewers for a 9 p.m. news product and the time has come to put full focus on the news battle at 10 p.m.," said Fink.
