After squandering a 5-1 lead, the Cougars rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to down relentless Molokai, 10-8, in an opening-round game of the Wally Yonamine FoundationHawaii High School Athletic Association Tournament yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

Kaiser also stopped Molokai's 13-game winning streak. Trailing 8-7, the Cougars strung successive singles by Darren Chu, Grant Sato and Jason Castro to tie the game at 8. After a Keith Asato sacrifice moved runners to second and third, the go-ahead run scored on a groundout to short by Charlton Carter. Pinch-hitter Sam Takagishi then doubled home an insurance run to make it 10-8. All 10 runs were charged to losing pitcher Kekoa Colon, the Farmers' ace right-hander.

Doug Goeas pitched 2V6 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. "After two bad games (in the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs), to play like this, where both teams battled, we couldn't have asked for anything better," Kaiser coach Chad Okamura said. The Cougars will face second-seeded Mililani, which drew a bye yesterday, in a 4:30 p.m. quarterfinal today. The Trojans beat the Cougars, 9-7, in the OIA semifinals last week.

Farmers' coach Ken Naka-yama acknowledged Kaiser's TOURNAMENTS ability to hit Colon, who has drawn pro scouts to his outings this season. But even when he had the 8-7 lead, Nakayama decided to stay with his ace. "He was struggling," Nakayama said. "But even then, I felt it was his game." Okamura was impressed, but not surprised by the scrappy play of the Farmers. "They don't know when to quit," Okamura said.

"That's an awesome quality." The Farmers are a relatively young squad, and the school is making its first state appearance since 1989. "The whole atmosphere was different," Nakayama said of playing at the stadium. "This is the first time for all of our kids. But that's how we learn." Wayne lost his shutout on Ross Murakami's ground-rule double to left. That play turned out to be important because Kanaeholo would have scored easily if the ball had stayed in the field of play.
