Most persons are unaware of the revolution created in Industrial circles by the introduction of the bissenier process of jiiaklng steel. This process belongs in the same cutegory with the invention of the printing press and the introduction of the steam engine in Its rotation to human progress.

Steel is a compound of Iron w'ith a small percentage of carbon, which is rendered malleable by being cast while In a state of fusion. Cast iron Is Iron with a much larger percentage of carbon and other Impurities. Bcsscmer's process converts cast iron Into steel by blowing a blast of cold air through melted cast iron. The oxygen of tho air burns out the carbon, silicon and i other unwelcome elements until the right proportion Is reached, and then the steel is cast. The effect of the process waa at once to cheapen steel and to increase Its use enormously.

In 1855, when Bessemer took out bis first patent, steel sold In England for five times Its present price. Sir Henry Bessemer shared the common lot of inventors In encountering Incredulity when his discovery was first announced, but he was more fortunate than most inventors. He lived to enjoy the rewards of fame and fortune and to witness the worldwide adoption of his process. The first besemer steel rail ev7 laid down was at Derby, England, i 1857. It was placed at a point whero it had been necessary to renew the iron rails once In three months because of Incessaut wear.

To Matthew Heuson, faithful assistant and personal atteudnnt of Commander Peary, belongs the unique distinction of being the only man of his race to reach tho top of the world. In fact, he is one of a very few of any race to reach that desideratum of explorers. The number is yet to be determined, some believe. In any event, there is no shadow of doubt resting on the exploit of Mr. Ilenson, who was with Peary and his four Eskimos when the farthest north wns attained.

As was published in the Altoona Times, yesterday morning, Captain of ihe Railroad Police G. Chal Port, arrested Kretzinger at the Duncannon station and later effected a confession from him to the effect that he had flagged the train and told the harrowing tale of being held up, his purpose being to secure notoriety, and possibly reward, for saving the lives of so many passengers. After telling his story to the trainmen young Kretzinger hurried to his home and related the story of his bravery to his mother, telling of saving the lives of the passengers on the Pennsy flyer. Later he told his story to the station master, who communicated with Superintendent C. A.

This sounds somewhat like a modern Blondln performance, and one could Imagine the crowd that would assemble to witness such a feat In reality it was an event of common occurrence during the sixth century. Existing documents relative to the monastery of Mont St. Michel, In Normandy, reveal the fact that tho Island was separated from the French district of Coutnnces by a narrow stream only and that the stream win bridged by a single plank.

The Inhabitants of Jersey were compelled to keep this plank in good repair, for It was used by the bishop of the diocese when he made his periodical visits thst portion of his flock, and tho worthy prelate desired to make tfcu crossing In safety. In the year 7 and again in the year 824 there wero seismic disturbances, called by ancient writers "cataclysms," which submerged towns and forests on the FrencU coast, thus widening the stretch of water and making the separation of Jersey nore complete.
