Staff Writer Three local residents were accorded special honor in dedication ceremonies Tuesday on the Anderson campus Tributes were paid to Dr Adam Miller and his wife Grace at the formal dedication ceremonies of the Miller Chapel erected last winter to adjoin the School of Theology building i THE MINISTRY of the Millers spans more than three score years' and includes pastoral and missionary service administrative leadership with the mission board of the Church of God and also with Anderson College Dr Miller chaired the study on Byrum tlijl Byrum survives Portraits of the Byrums will grace the walls of building The Hall was erected in 1908 served as the first permanent tabernacle for the annual camp meeting of the movement Il was later adapted to serve as a gym an auditorium for drama presentations finally a convocation hall for Anderson College students seminary education which led to the establishment of Anderson School of Theology and as dean he guided its growth from 1953 to 1962 Mrs Miller expressed her appreciation of the simplicity and beauty of the newt chapel and noted a wedding had been one of its first services 5 "MY HEART is full" Dr Miller told the audience which included a multitude of his former students The graduate alumni choir sang for the dedication service The audience then moved on to the south entrance of the newly renovated Byrum Hall named for six members of a family which made majoi contributions to the growth and development of the Church of God Enoch Byrum whose home formerly occupied the site of the Wilson Library and his brother Noah Byrum who had lived at the comer of ifth and College Drive had come to Anderson in 1906 as executive officers in the Gospel Trumpet Publishing plant now Warner Press Inc as editor of the journal the Trumpet" the influence of Byrum was felt across the land in of Church of God homes ROBERT BYRUM a brother of Enoch and Noah was architect and of the structure which now bears the family name He had erected "Old Main" predecessor of Decker Hall" and also a number of other buildings Assisting in the construction of Byrum Hall was a young man of 20 Russell well known contractor and developer His other service to the Church of God includes work as a writer a pastor and a teacher He is a former managing editor of the Gospel Trumpet Companv He was a member of the first faculty ol Anderson Bible Training School now Anderson College His textbook "Christian Theology" is still in use Bessie Hittie Byrum wife of Russell Byrum was early associated with the Gospel Trumpet plant here Then she served as a missionary to Syria before the irst World War Like her husband she was also a member of the first faculty of the Anderson Bible Training Schoo 1 Per ha ps her a test contribution was in the field of Christian education She was recognized as one of the most significant and innovative adult church school teachers in the history of the Park Place Church of God: RUTHVEN HOLMES BYRUM son of Noah Bvrum was the founder and chairman of the Art Department of Anderson College and his landscapes have become known throughout the Midwest Of the six Byrums being memorialized by naming the renovated structure in their honor only Russell Join In Dedication (Steve Hogenslekec STUDIO THEATRE in the southeast corner is named for the late Malcom Gressman instructor in drama for 18 years This tribute was given by Dr Robert Smith present instructor in drama who had been a student under Dr Gressman President Robert Reardon stated that application has been made to have Byrum Hall set aside as a Herald Staff Writer In a move which may set the tone for a restructuring of the central school administration the Anderson school board Tuesday appointed William O'Neal administrative assistant to incoming superintendent Dr Harold Gallagher a doctoral student at Ball State University and assistant principal at Muncie South Side High School will be in charge of the Affirmative Action Program HE WILL ALSO SERVE as permanent chairman of the disciplinary hearing committee will aid with the alternative school program and will eventually become involved in the teacher contract bargaining team Gallagher introduced to the board as "a special person one whose background would eventually lead him to a doctorate someone with experience in the schools who understands human relations very well" (Spokesmen of the Madison County chapter of the NAACP had repeatedly asked that a "human relations" director be appointed by the board) IN RESPONSE to questions from reporters Gallagher said "1 am reorganizing the administration to some extent" He hinted he would hire someone to fill a newly created post of personal director Gallagher also said he will probably fill the post he is vacating assistant superintendent of elementary education by the end of summer O'Neal 36 has livid in Muncie since the age of 2 He received his bachelor'sand degrees from Ball State and expects to have his PhD by August As an undergraduate he played on the basketball team Tor four years at BSU ASKED WHAT goals he has set in his new position O'Neal said his first priority is to find out exactly what needs to told The Herald he hopes to have a decision on the two board appointments within a week But he said the selection procedure may differ from last vear "LAST TIME I kind of put together interview for the proposal UAW Local 662 will purchase 153 acres of land 30 miles north of Anderson for an education recreation center The property located just off I 69 is presently owned by Indiana Northern University which is moving its campus to Wayne According to 662 President Robert Kinerk about one third of the land is wooded one third is presently cultivated and the other third is occupied by a 10
