Now that the Horseshoe no longer offers bingo, is mere another casirw downtown that does? A Binion's Horseshoe closed its bingo hall so that it could use the big room to house the 1999 World Series of Poker. When the room wasn't reopened after the tournament the downtown was left without a full-scale bingo operation. That situation didn't last long, however. Responding to customer demand, the Horseshoe is again offering bingo.

Ground has been officially broken for the 1 75 million 216-room Suncoast casino on the far west side of town. Dirt is also being moved on Flamingo, a mile west of the Strip, in preparation for construction of a $275 million project from the owners of the Fiesta. After decades as Las Vegas' best shrimp cocktail the famous 99-center at the Golden Gate has a serious challenger.

The Jokers Wild casino in Henderson has taken dead aim at the Gate with its own 99-cent shrimp, equal in quality and hand-filled on demand. What makes it better? It's just plain bigger. In a shrimp-to-shrimp weigh-off no sauce, no filler the Golden Gate cocktail checks in at a puny 2.9 ounces compared to Jokers Wild's 6.7 ounces. It's a meal in itself. Jokers Wild is located on the south end of Boulder Highway; the shrimp cocktail is served from a snack cart, 11 am to 11 p.m.

You can also reduce the chances of infection by washing your hands frequently. The antiviral drugs rimantidine and amantidine can be used to prevent or treat an influenza A infection. These drugs are available only by prescription and occasionally have side effects such as nervousness, anxiety, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating, nausea and vomiting.

They are probably most useful in travelers over 65 or those with chronic medical problems such as heart, lung or kidney disease. You should check with your doctor to see whether one of these drugs is appropriate for you on this trip. Since pneumonia may be a complication of the flu, it is worth getting the pneumonia vaccine if you are over 65 or have any underlying chronic medical conditions. Unfortunately, the flu vaccine produced in the United States for last winter is no longer available because it expired on June 30. The flu vaccine for next winter won't be available until September, too late for a summer trip.

If you develop a flu-like illness within a week of returning to Hawaii, see your doctor and emphasize that you recently traveled in Alaska where there is an outbreak of influenza. Your doctor may want to test you for influenz a A and treat you with an antiviral drug. Dr. Vernon Ansdell specializes in travel medicine at Kaiser Perma-nente. His column appears the second Sunday of each month in The Advertiser travel section.

I'm concerned because I'm booked on an Alaska cruise in August A. We are just starting to get reports of a large outbreak of influenza A in Alaska and the Yukon Territory this summer.

In the past six weeks, there have been more than 400 cases of acute respiratory infection with cough and fever among tourists traveling in Alaska and the Yukon Territories on cruises and land-based tours. In addition, there have been more.than 100 cases of flu among tourism workers. Most of these infections have been shown to be caused by influenza A. Four travelers have been hospitalized with pneumonia, but there have been no deaths so far. A similar outbreak of influenza A occurred last summer in the same area and affected more than 40,000 tourists.

The greatest concern is for travelers who are at increased risk of complications from the flu. These include travelers 65 years or older and those with chronic health problems such as diabetes or serious heart, lung or kidney problems. Most travelers should not be overly concerned about this outbreak, however. Every week, 70,000 overland and cruise-ship passengers travel to Alaska and the Yukon Territory and only a small percentage have become UL Influenza is spread by droplets produced by coughing and sneezing. "It's wonderful" What makes the as-yet unnamed coaster different from all others is the egg-like seat, which cups riders into a flying position, holding their knees and upper bodies in place. As a result, rather than sitting up for the wild journey, riders spend virtually all of the ride on their backs and fronts, sailing down the inversions. The course includes a 66-foot vertical loop, a double inversion corkscrew and a horseshoe that inverts the track to about 1 10 degrees. Gayle Ando, the general manager of the amusement park, says the coaster won't be ready for passengers until next March.
