record earnings for 1970 of $199 a share a very significant increase of 259 per cent from the $158 a share re corded for 1969 Contributions to earnings growth came from 1) increased gas rates in the distribution system 2) price improvement for crude oil and natural gas liquids 3) growth in gas air conditioner sales 4) continued success from an active exploratory drilling pro gram and 5) improved opera tions and tight expense control Operating revenues increased almost 10 per cent to $2598 mil lion from $2366 million for 1969 We are anticipating a similar gain in revenues for 1971 Last month Lone Star Gas an nounced that it planned to spend $46 million on capital expend! fares during the current year Its cash flow should exceed this so no additional financing will be required this year In mid 1970 Lone Star Gas sold $30 million of a 9 per cent sinking fund debenture to help finance part of 1969's program and 'short term loans A new subsidiary Lone Star Energy Company will spend $25 Lone Star Gas has made a con certed effort to correlate the two basic functions gas supply and exploration more than ever before by deliberate' design Early last year the company acquired a 50 per cent interest in some 70000 acres of leases covering multi pay prospects in the Anadarko Basin in Okla homa Last fall Lone Star be gan drilling an ultra deep wild cat well in this basin to a tar get depth of 28000 feet a record The well is now drilling to about 15000 feet and should take approximately two years to reach its geological objective A second well offsetting gas production has also commenced with a projected depth of 24000 feet These wells are natural ly very expensive but the gas reserves if present couldbe a very significant addition of its gas inventory Although we do not anticipate the record pace of 1970 to be repeated we are estimating earnings of $225 a share Selling at 111 times estimated earn ings Lone Star Gas is recom mended as an interesting and reasonably priced vehicle for participation in the growth en visoned for the natural gas in dustry The dividend has been increased to a yearly rate of $124 for a respectable 50 per cent yield to the Shepherds
