CASA. GRANDE DISPATCH FRIDAY, MAY 8, 1931 to Golf Balls Are Tested In England Local Players Differ In Opinion As To Merits Of Larger Ball PEAKING of the comparative merits of the larger golf ball, recently adopted as official, and the smaller and heavier ball now in the discard, opinion differs, while all notice the difference in play; the large ball seems to help some players and retard others. Tom Day says he can get as much distance with the new ball as with the old, unless it is in the face of a high wind; others note that the wind puts emphasis on a slice or hook that was not there before, while with some players the larger ball is an aid to better hitting and putting. They are having matches settle the dispute over in England last Sunday over there Abe Mitchell defeated Young Henry Cotton, one up in 36 holes. Whatever advantage there was lay with the old ball as Mitchell gained his one-up lead on Cotton while playing the old ball on the first 18 at the Wentworth club and then only held Cotton even in the afternoon playing the new.

Cotton used the new ball in the morning and the old in the afternoon. Top flight golfers from all the world were gathering on English soil to prepare for the two spring classics, the open and the ama teur. Fourteen Americans, headed by George Voigt of New York, have entered the amateur at Westward Ho, May 18, according to the entry list made public today at St. An drews, while a slightly smaller en try of American professionals has been made for- the open. The amateur list shows 171 golfers entered from eight Among the professionals, Hflrt- on Smith, Joe Kirkwood and McDonald Smith have been here for some time practicing for the open and other pro events.

Joe Turnesa Tony Manero. Gene Sarazen and Johnny Farrell are either en route or planning to sail spon. Horton Smith and Kirkwood will make their first start at Southport next week in the first of the big money events. Titular Heavyweight Bout Now Framed for Ebbitts Field In June Dale Alexander Tops American League In Batting Percentage There is another Alexander the Great in baseball. Hammering an even 100 points on to his average during the second week of the campaign, Dale Alexander, first baseman of the Detroit Tigers, has soared to the top of the American league individual batting list, according to unofficial figures -which include Wednesday's games.

Alexander's terrific clip boosted his average to .490, 62 points better than the second place mark of Charlie Berry, Boston catcher. Joe Vosinik, young Cleveland outfielder-who roared through the first 10 days of the season at better-than a .500 pace, tamed down to the extent of losing 171 points, and fell from the lead to fifth place regulars. Follow-, ing Alexander and Berry, among the regulars, the Readers were: Spencer, Washington, Ruth, New York, Vosinik, Cleveland Hodapp, Cleveland, .360 Falk, Cleveland, Cooke, New York, and Melilo, St. Louis, .353. Six Cleveland regulars botted: .300 or better and the collective average of the pace setters was .331, two points shy of last week's mark, but far in front of Washington's .292 for second place.

The Athletics boosted their team fielding mark four points to .987 and retained the lead with New York second! at .979. Alexander' headed the individual list in total hits, with 24, had the most total bases, 36, and was tied with Vosmik in belting out doubles at seven. Spencer of Washington had propelled in 15 runs to lead in that department, while Johnny Stone's five home runs was another best mark. Lou Gehrig, New York's walloping first baseman, headed the field in stolen bases, having swiped five while honors in triples belonged to Harry Rice, Washington outfielder, who had lashed out four three-ply blows. Five hnrlers, Herby Pennock of the, Yankees, Pat Caraway of Chicago, Rube Walberg, Philadelphia, Wfflis Hudlin of Cleveland, and Hal HcKain of Chicago, had won two games without losing any but the most impressive record was owned by Wes FerreH, who reached a new height Wednesday by holding the St Low Browns hitless and runlets, for his fourth triumph in five starts.

Bob Grove Rules are upset by the decision that the coming bout between Sharkey and Carneara is to be of titular magnitude. Jack Sharkey asked the commission. The commissioners agreed. And now the battle between Sharkey and Primo Carnera, to be held at'Ebbets field Jiine 10, weather and courts permitting, is officially designated as being for the heavyweight championship of the worldi Whe nthe New York State Athletic commission sanctioned the scrap fistic fathers said they had not labeled it a title bout because no one had asked them to. Yesterday i Sharkey appeared at their meeting and presented his argument: "On September 19, 1930, and again on January 6, 1931, this commission adopted resolutions declaring that it would recognize a bout between myself and any suitable opponent as for the heavyweight championship of the world if Max Schmeling persisted in re- fusinb to give me a return match.

I have been matched to meet Primo Carnera, a worthy opponent, on June 10. I respectfully submit that this contest should be considered as for the championship." The commission agreed and adopted a resolutions recognizing the bout as for the title. Now the principal obstacle in the way Sharkey, Carnera and Jimmy Johnston, principal promoter of the show, -is the injunction the Madison Square Garden corporation of Illinois has filed in federal court. The Garden asks that Carnera be restrained from engaging in this or any other major" bout until he has fulfilled a contract the Garden claims to hold 1 calling for him to meet the winner of the Max Schmeling- Young Stribling fight in Cleveland July 3. No action is expected on the injunction before next week.

the Athletic's great southpaw, relinquished the strikeout leadership to Toy Sherid of the Yankees, who had fanned 23 batsmen in five games. Grove's average, however was higher for he had whiffed 22 in four games. Has Beens! say that they played to give the school a chance to come back school players were free with alibis for their first While they feel the same way about a third game it is doubtful it is said if the school boys are willing to take another chance, so it is probably that Thursday's game ended this years local schedule.
