Carolina released DeAn-gelo Williams, its career rushing leader. Two retirements also drew attention away from the chase for free agents. Five-time All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis, the heart of San Francisco's defense for eight seasons, called it quits.

The 2007 Defensive Rookie of the Year is leaving because of recurrent toe and feet injuries. "In my head, I'm already a Hall of Famer," Willis said. "I am leaving this with closure, saying that I am happy today, more happy today than I was the day I was drafted. That says something to me." Tennessee quarterback Jake Locker, his four-year pro career ravaged by injuries, also retired, saying he has no "burning desire" to keep playing. The 49ers lost another mainstay when running back Frank Gore, their career rushing leader, joined the Colts.

Linebacker A.J. Hawk, who grew up in Ohio and attended Ohio State, agreed to terms with Cincinnati on a two-year deal. Hawk spent his first nine seasons in Green Bay. Jacksonville, with lots of salary cap room, grabbed tight end Julius Thomas away from Denver among a slew of moves. The Jaguars agreed to deals with defensive end Jared Odrick, right tackle Jermey Parnell, cornerback Davon House, linebacker Dan Skuta and safety Sergio Brown.

Thomas agreed on a five-year deal worth $46 million, with $24 million guaranteed. Arizona got probably the best run blocker in this year's group, guard Mike Iu-pati, who agreed on a five-year, $40 million contract with $22.5 million guaranteed. The 6-foot-5, 331-pound lineman played five seasons with San Francisco, is a three -time Pro Bowl player and made the All-Pro team in 2012. Arizona also re-signed linebacker LaMarr Woo-dley. The Falcons fortified the middle of new coach Dan Quinn's defense by signing free-agent linebackers Brooks Reed and Justin Associated Press NEW YORK As free agency began Tuesday, the NFL looked more like fantasy football.

Trades, anyone? Monster deals sending Jimmy Graham to Seattle and Sam Bradford to Philadelphia stole the spotlight from free agent signings. The biggest free agency move was made by the Jets, digging into their past and bringing back cornerback Darrelle Revis, according to his agents. New Orleans agreed to send its star tight end to the Seahawks for center Max Unger, with draft picks changing hands. The Saints are to get a first-round pick, while Seattle receives a fourth-rounder. That stunner was followed by Bradford, the injury-prone quarterback who barely has played the past two years (knee), going to Philadelphia for Nick Foles, who also comes off an injury-shortened season (collarbone) and is headed to St.

Louis. Bradford was the top overall draft pick in 2010. Foles is the latest starter to depart Philadelphia He joins two-time All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy, now in Buffalo, and Pro Bowl wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, headed for Kansas City, in going elsewhere. Philadelphia also added Seahawks starting corner-back Byron Maxwell as a free agent with a six-year deal. And Seattle brought in cornerback Cary Williams, formerly of the Eagles and a 2012 Super Bowl winner with the Ravens.

Baltimore dealt nose tackle Haloti Ngata to Detroit, which is about to lose All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in free agency. Ngata, 31 and a five-time Pro Bowler, is due $8.5 million next season and has a $16 million salary cap figure. The Bills confirmed acquiring McCoy for linebacker Kiko Alonso; McCoy also signed a contract extension for $40 million over five years. The Jets also confirmed a previously agreed upon trade, getting receiver Brandon Marshall from Chicago for a fifth-round draft pick. The Jets released WR-KR Percy Harvin, whom they playing time.

Thomas, who has appeared in 21 games for the Dolphins over the last two seasons, can play safety and slot defensive back in the nickel formation. Last season, he appeared in eight games and made two starts. With starting safety Louis Delmas a free agent (and coming off a knee injury) and starting nickel Jimmy Wilson also a free agent, there could be a chance for Thomas to compete for a starting job or remain a key reserve. The AFC East has been active so far. Buffalo traded linebacker Kiko Alonso to acquire running back Le-Sean McCoy from Philadelphia, acquired quarterback Matt Cassel from Minnesota and signed ex-Dolphins guard Richie Incognito.

And the Jets traded for wide receiver Brandon Marshall and reportedly added free agent cornerback Darrelle Revis. The Dolphins' eventual acquisition of Suh definitely keeps them in the conversation for a playoff berth in the AFC. But they have lots more work to do in free agency andor the draft to improve on last year's 8-8 finish, specifically at guard, cornerback, linebacker, safety, wide receiver, running back, and possibly at tight end. Dolphins went to work repairing other parts of their team Tuesday as they resigned linebacker Kelvin Sheppard and safety Michael Thomas, and extended a second-round restricted free agent tender to defensive end Derrick Shelby ($2.35 million). That means the Dolphins have the right to match any offer they get for Shelby and if they lose him they get a second-round pick as compensation.

Shelby would fortify the defensive line, which is the early favorite to be the strength of the team once again. Shelby, who plays mostly end but also can shift inside to tackle, had a career-best three sacks last season after posting 2.5 sacks two years ago. The three-year veteran is viewed as a rising prospect whose best asset is his passing-rushing ability. He'd provide depth to a line that will include Suh and Earl Mitchell at tackles and Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon at ends. Sheppard and Thomas will likely be mostly special teams players although Thomas has a chance to contribute from scrimmage.

Sheppard, an inside linebacker, started 31 games in 2011-13 for Buffalo and Indianapolis and there's a small chance he could push middle linebacker Koa Misi for DOLPHINS Continued from Page 1C ers Tuesday linebacker Philip Wheeler and guard Shelley Smith (saving $2.75 million) and restructured punter Brandon Fields' contract, saving another $1 million. But more financial breathing room might be desired. The Dolphins have already released wide receivers Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson, Smith and fellow guard Nate Garner, Wheeler, and cornerback Cortland Finnegan. It's expected they'll release linebacker Dannell El-lerbe soon and designate him a June 1 cut. If that happens, that move, combined with Wheeler's release and eventual June 1 cut designation, clears an additional $1L45 million in cap space ($8.45 million for Ellerbe and $3 million for Wheeler).

But that money wouldn't be available until June 2. It's not yet known what will become of starting defensive tackle Randy Starks, who will count $6 million on the salary cap. It's also not known what will become of disgruntle wide receiver Mike Wallace ($12.1 million on the cap), who could be traded or released. Kinsman who spoke on camera about her experience the night and morning of the alleged rape in a documentary about sexual assault on college campuses called "The Hunting Ground" alleged the university violated two counts of Tide IX federal statutes, providing a 'clearly unreasonable response' and creating a 'hostile education environment' In her complaint, Kinsman is seeking unspecified damages "including but not limited to reimbursement and payment for her education expenses; payment of expenses incurred as a result of the sexual assault; damages for emotional pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and lost future earnings.

The lawsuit also seeks injunctive relief requiring FSU to comply with federal Tide IX law, court costs and attorney fees and any other relief the court sees fit." The complaint also states that she demands a jury trial. FSU, in its motion to dismiss the case, states that it is not liable to Kinsman under Tide IX because it provided her the services of a Victim Advocate Program "within hours of her alleged sexual assault and continuously thereafter." By Brendan Sonnone Staff writer FSU's board of trustees asked a federal judge to dismiss a Title IX lawsuit filed by the woman who accused Jameis Winston of sexual assault. Erica Kinsman, under the name "Jane Dow," filed a federal civil lawsuit against FSU in January, stating the school violated her Title IX rights by not appropriately investigating an incident in December 2012 during which she said she was raped by Winston. Winston was never charged with a crime or student code of conduct violations, but extensive questions have been raised about the investigation of the rape allegation was handled by Tallahassee police and FSU. FSU, stating that the complaint "fails to state a claim upon which relief can be granted," requested that the U.S.

District Court in Orlando dismiss the case late Monday. 'Tlorida State University has no tolerance for sexual harassment of any kind, so being adverse to a former student and alleged sexual assault victim is an unwelcome position for the university," FSU president John Thrasher said in a statement released by the university.
