"i By Ferd Borsch Advertiser Staff Writer At 6 feet 7 and 230 pounds, James "Jamie" Daspit continues to grow as a pitcher with major league ambitions. A change in. scenery, the writings of Norman Vincent.

Peale and a winning record have combined to make a believer of Daspit a believer in himself. 'i "I now believe I can pitch in the major leagues," said Daspit, who plays for Jackson, in the Double-A Texas League. "I could not tell you that last year." Last season was a pain-in-the-back for Daspit, a former St. Louis School tennis player who did not take up baseball seriously until his college days at Sacramento State. Drafted and signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers for his size and 90-mph fastball rather than his experience, Daspit started his climb in the Dodger system at Great Falls, Mont, in 1990.

Since then, he has toiled for Bakersfield in the California League, Vero Beach in the Florida State League and San Antonio in the Texas It was at San Antonio that a ery has doubled his pitching -pleasure. "In addition to my three-quarters delivery, I am throwing a little lower almost a sidearm delivery," he said. "That gives me two motions on WJ my fastball, slider and change. I have six pitches instead of -three." Pitching coach Charley Tay lor said Daspit has quality pitches whether it's the 1, fastball or the breaking ball. "All I can say is that Jamie is throwing great," Taylor said.

Butera, who has had the likes of Bill Gullickson, Jeff Reardon, John Franco, Key and David Stieb on his -pitching staffs in the leagues, is very high on Das- pit's future. "He has the makings to go all the way," said Butera. "Def- -initely, he has a major league -Z future." SHORT HOPS: Daspit will miss one or two turns In the rotation because of a tender elbow. He lasted less than -two innings In his last start, leaving the game after he felt something pop in his right elbow. 'It didn't hurt when it popped, but it hurt when I pitched," he said.

Examinations later revealed a minor strain in the elbow. Jamie's- dad, insurance executive Warren Das-' pit, still lives in Hawaii. i back injury curtailed his pitching activity. "I missed about half of the season with a back strain," Daspit said. "It was a struggle." He finished a less-than-satis-fying season with a 3-8 record and 4.43 earned-run average in sharp contrast to -the 5-2 and 3-2 with two saves seasons that started him on his way.

Daspit reported to Dodger-town in Vero Beach for his fifth spring training last March when the unexpected changed his baseball course. "I was traded to the (Houston) Astro organization near the close of spring training," he said. "I was real happy with the deal. I think I have a better chance with Houston, more opportunity for advancement." Assigned to Jackson, Daspit has responded with a 5-1 record, one save and a 2.51 ERA as a combination starter-reliev- er for the Generals. He strung 34 consecutive shutout innings in reeling off three wins.

A more positive attitude and a new side-arm delivery are two reasons for success, according to Daspit. "I had been reading a lot of Norman Vincent Peale and I feel a more positive approach has helped me," he said. "It has helped me to focus and to concentrate on my pitching." Jackson manager Sal Butera is impressed with the perfor- mance of his1 basketball-tall righthander. "Jamie was new to the nization, so we did not know what to expect," said Butera, who caught for all or portions of nine seasons in the big leagues. "From what we have seen, he has fantastic control for a fastball pitcher.

And his curveball has improved this season." Daspit said that a new deliv games for charging Detroit pitcher Greg Cadaret on July 15 and starting a brawl. Karkovice and Phillips each was suspended three games for making physical contact with umpires. Karkovice -had a run-in with umpire Brian O'Nora on July '8, and Phillips touched umpire Tim Tschida on July 9. Ail three players have appealed their suspensions, which can't begin until hearings are held. Meanwhile, the White Sox announced yesterday that they were putting Karkovice on the 15-day disabled list because of torn cartilage in his left knee.

Karkovice was scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery tomorrow. Chicago said his rehabilitation la expected to last three to four weeks. FIGHT AFTERMATH: The president of the International League suspended and fined 35 players yesterday from the Richmond and Norfolk teams for leaving their positions during a brief fight in a game Sunday night. Randy Mobley, president of the Triple-A league, fined each player $300 and suspended each for two days. Mobley said he was working out a schedule for the suspensions so that no games would be forfeited but that all the players would miss two games over the next two weeks.

He said no more than three players at a time will be suspended from each team. STARS ARE OUT: Two Us Vegas Stars players were suspended indefinitely while authorities review the shooting death of a young woman in the apartment, of one of them. Both pitcher Fidel Compres and In-fielder Julio Bruno were suspended by the Stars'" major league affiliate, the San Diego Padres. Police said 19-year-old Sandra Cor-nejo was killed when Compres was showing off a 9mm handgun at his apartment early Monday Although the shooting is being treated as accidental, the, case has been submitted to the Clark County District Attorney's office for review. iic jida an exclusive negotiating with the Padres and has given the team's attorneys $2 million to be held in escrow.

The investment banking firm handling the deal for the Padres has applied to Major League Baseball to enter into detailed negotiations with full financial disclosure. "We've taken the first steps we need to take," said Paul Wachter, managing director of West Coast investment banking for Wertheim Schroder Co. in Los Angeles. Owners would then have to approve a final deal. Herrick, whose Herrick Co.

has more than $1 billion in U.S. holdings, said he would pay between $75 million and $80 million for the Padres. The Padres' current 15-man ownership group, headed by Los Angeles television producer Tom Werner, includes 10 partners from San Diego. The group bought the Padres from Joan Kroc in 1990 for $75 million. Werner refused to comment.
