C4 Monday, March 9, 1998 Tie Honolulu Advertiser Moby Dick is the shining star in a whale of a cable miniseries Television Revi 'Moby Dick" WHENWHERE: 8 p.m. Sunday and next Monday on USA basic-cable channels (IS on Oceanic, 32 on TCI). his inexperience reflects our own. We learn about whaling, Ahab and Moby Dick through his young eyes and the reflective words of his narration. Ishmael is played by Henry Thomas, who was only 10 years old when he played Elliott, the boy who found and sheltered the title character in "E.T.

The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982). Now a handsome, poised young man, he is a congenial companion through this long voyage. The conscience of the Pequod, the man who strives most forcefully, although vainly, to talk Ahab into common sense, is the first mate, Starbuck, earnestly portrayed by Ted Levine. This is a move to the By Lee Winfrey Knight-Ridder News Service Fittingly enough, the best performer in "Moby Dick" is Moby Dick. In a mighty miniseries beginning Sunday on the USA cable channel, the great white whale hits every mark with precision, and convincingly delivers every action sequence, looking majestic all the while.

Moby looks so delightfully domineering, so handsome in profile, and so admirable in action that few viewers are likely to sympathize with Captain Ahab's monomaniacal desire to kill him in this four-hour show, which will conclude next Monday at the same time. That's all good side of the moral map for Levine, best-known previously as Buffalo Bill, the deranged serial killer in "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991). He is as good here as he was evil there. In a salute to Moby's past, the role of Father Mapple, the minister who preaches the last sermon heard by the Pequod's crew, is played by Gregory Peck, 81, who portrayed Ahab in an admired 1956 movie directed by John Huston. One of the flaws in Huston's entertaining movie was that its Pequod crew was virtually all white.

This miniseries' cast is much more reflective of the multiracial crew that Melville placed aboard his fictional ship. British Shakespearean actor before he became famous in America as Capt. Jean-Luc Pi-card, the commanding officer in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Stewart possesses the presence and the diction to deliver Ahab's rolling 19th-century speeches with clarity, and to personify with conviction his obsession. But nobody steals any scenes from Moby in this, the most expensive production in the history of USA, which will be 18 years old next month. You'll never notice that Moby Dick was built in two pieces: The body that rises out of the water like an ivory missile is by Mothers Art Productions, and the tail that flails whale boats into pieces is by John Cox's Creature Workshop.

Both are special-effects companies in Australia, where this miniseries was filmed. Once you've got a great whale and a convincing captain, you're 90 percent home-free in producing "Moby Dick." But no detail passes neglected here, with the crew of Ahab's whaling ship, the Pequod, engagingly portrayed. The first sentence spoken in this miniseries is the first sentence of Melville's novel: "Call me Ishmael." Ishmael, a former schoolteacher going to sea for the first time, is probably the character with whom viewers will most readily identify, since right, because Herman Melville, who created the most famous whale since Jonah's in his classic 1851 novel, never intended for anyone to regard Ahab as a sympathetic hero.
