nnn hi. ni.rnii.NM -lnmr-mm ir.ui tonight By CHUCK WINELAND Staff Sports Writer Purdue's women risk their unbeaten record tonight and Saturday in the fifth annual Boilermaker Premiere basketball tournament at Mackey Arena. The 2-0 Boilermakers play at 8:30 p.m. against Loyola of Chicago, which will be making its season debut. In the 6:30 opener, 2-1 Indiana State takes on Toledo, which also will be playing its opener.

The consolation game is at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the title will be decided at 4. Tickets are $2. The defending champion, Florida, is not in this year's tourney. Coach Ruth Jones is pleased, but not especially surprised by her team's start.

Purdue beat Dayton 71-69 on a last-second shot by Carol Emanuel, then broke open a close game in the final six minutes to win at Wayne State Wednesday night, 79-54. Jones "tried desperately to schedule success" in the preseason, she said. "We tried to get teams that were similar to our program so we'd have a reasonable shot at success. Such teams aren't easy to find." The Boilers have been sparked by 5-foot-7 guard Brenda Kelsay, a sophomore from Shelbyville. She had 19 points and 8 rebounds against Dayton, and 12 points and 5 rebounds against Wayne State.

She was redshirted last year after suffering a knee injury, but is back at full strength and will start in the backcourt tonight with Tina Stoner, a 5-11 freshman from Louisville who had 13 points and 6 rebounds Wednesday. Senior Leslie Schultz (6-foot) had 19 points and 7 'rebounds against Wayne State. Emanuel, the 5-11 senior who was Purdue's most valuable player last year, had 16 points "and 10 rebounds. The Boilers' other starter is 5-11 sophomore Jennifer Isom from Bloomington. On the ground, Moore gained just 25 yards on 14 carries.

The Rams dominated the third quarter but scored only a single touchdown. They missed another chance when came up with his end zone interception on a ball deflected by San Francisco's Eric Wright. In the final period, the Rams took a 24-23 lead on Tyler's final touchdown. But Dana McLemore returned the ensuing kickoff 45 yards to the San Francisco 47-yard line. Montana then whipped five passes in a 53-yard drive as the 49ers rallied to win.

They scored the game-winning touchdown with 4:40 to play. Ferragamo won't know until later if he had won back the starting Los Angeles quarterback job. "That decision is up to the coaches," he said. Lansford missed a 52-yard attempt late in the first half. "It's really tough to lose a game when you play hard," said Los Angeles Coach Ray Malavasi.

"We made a couple of mistakes that hurt us. "I thought the offensive line played well. Our defense played well at times, but not good enough. Thirty points is too much." A crowd of 58,574 watched at Anaheim Stadium on a clear, chilly night. There were 9,975 no-shows.

The game was televised locally as well as nationally. Los Angeles took a 10-3 first-quarter lead but the 49ers scored 17 points in the second period with Moore catching his two touchdown passes. Moore, who asked the 49ers for a tryout after being cut by Seattle said, "This is the first time I've been interviewed and I was not proud of my running game tonight. But it is the first time I've ever scored three touchdowns in a game." a 1-4 team could make the approaching Super Bowl playoffs. Four games remain for both the 49ers and Rams.

"We had to go to the air because they bottled up our running game, which we had hoped would work," said Walsh. "We don't have a balanced attack. We're too dependent on the pass. We're not a great running team, but we do have to get a better balance." Running back Jeff Moore scored all three of San Francisco's touchdowns. The first two came on passes of 38 and 34 yards from Montana and the finale and game-winner came on a 1-yard smash.

Montana threw 37 passes and completed 26 with no interceptions. With regular quarterback Bert Jones sidelined because of an irritated nerve his neck, Vince Ferragamo took over the job he relinquished after the 1980 season to go to Canada. Ferragamo returned to the Rams after ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) San Francisco's Super Bowl champions could be on the road back after a near-disastrous start this season. But Coach Bill Walsh wishes he had a running game to go with Joe Montana's passing.

The San Francisco quarterback threw for 305 yards Thursday night to tie the National Football League record of four straight games of 300 or more passing yards set by San Diego's Dan Fouts in 1979. Forty-four of the yards came in a fourth-period comeback drive that lifted the 49ers to a 30-24 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in their nationally televised aerial battle. The teams combined for 636 yards through ther air while rushing for only 113 yards. The victory raised San Francisco's record to 2-3 in this strike-interrupted season while Los Angeles fell to 1-4. Before the game, Walsh had said he didn't believe his season with Montreal proved a fiasco.

In this initial start in 1982, he completed 20 of his 43 passes for 286 yards and had two intercepted one by Dwight Hicks in the San Francisco end zone. "They stopped the run with (linebacker) Jack Reynolds (a former Ram) and we felt we could pass," said Ferragamo. He threw one touchdown pass, 27-yarder to running back Wendell Tyler. Tyler also scored other two Los Angeles touchdowns on runs of one and 15 yards. Ray Wersching booted field goals of 33, 44 and 38 yards for the 49ers.

The Boilers were 15-16 that year, then 21-16, 25-11, 38-9, 33-16, 38-15 and 34-8 for a 235-91 record. PURDUE QUALIFIED for the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) tournament in 1978. The Boilermakers were 13th of 24 teams that year, 12th of 20 in 1979 and 6th of 12 in the Midwest Regional in 1980.

Last year they were 12th of 20 in the NCAA tournament, losing to eventual runner-up UCLA in the Mideast Regional in Alabama. If another unbeaten Division I volleyball team exists, it's a secret. Hawaii is ranked No. 1 with a 26-1 record. The next-best record in the top-20 poll, belongs to No.

2-ranked San Diego State (35-5). USC is 23-7. Dewey knew she had a good team. She has said so every time the opportunity arose since the season began with a four-game victory against visiting Indiana on Sept. 11.

BUT SHE "certainly did not" anticipate an unbeaten regular season. DEWEY. Pag C-2 By CHUCK WINELAND Staff Sports Writer She ushered the interviewer to a seat in the "volleyball half" of her office in Mackey Arena. The walls surrounding the other half are adorned with art. Real art, not sports art.

The sports art is reserved for the walls nearest to the door. Perhaps the arrangement of the room says something about Carol Dewey. She can sit behind her desk and contemplate classical music another favorite but she can't leave her office without walking through the "volleyball half." And when her mind switches to volleyball, well, the results are obvious. AFTER EIGHT seasons as Purdue University's first and only volleyball coach, Dewey has built a program that is now making a serious bid for a national championship. The eighth-ranked Boilermakers, 31-0, open National Collegiate Athletic Association postseason tournament play at 5 p.m.

Sunday at home against Rutgers, 42-8. The winner of the first-round match Purdue has beaten Rutgers once this season will face the winner of this weekend's Penn State-Nebraska match in the Mideast Regional, also to be held Dec. 11-12 at Purdue. Joining those teams will be the winner of the Northwestern at Tennessee match, and Southern California. USC, the defending national champion, is ranked third and is one of four teams to receive first-round tourney byes.

THE MIDEAST Regional champion will be one of the Final Four at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. the site of the NCAA championships. "Stockton, not mean much to you, but Purdue volleyball team it's the pot 'o gold at the end of the It's a goal that is within reach." So reads the Boilermakers' preseason media guide. Dewey hastens to note that she did not write those words. However, Dewey is the reason those words are so optimistic.
