fat. Off. DONT'S PLUMBING CO. 463 Sebastopol Ave. Phone 1618 1 1 MODEL WITH THE As to the soundness of bank loans, the soundness of any debt depends on the ability of the debtor to repay, which In turn is dependent upon the value of the debtor's assets and the relative size of his earnings.

In 1920 total deposits and currency amounted to $40 billion, total loans to $31 billion, a ratio of 77.5. in 1929 total deposits and currency amounted to $55 billion, total loan to $42 billion, a ratio of 76.4; in 1947, however, total deposits and currency amounted to $170. billion, total loans to $43 billion, a ration of only 25.3. Furthermore, in 1920. loans represented 44.3 per cent of gross national production; in 1929, 48.3 per cent; and in 1947 only 21.2 per cent.

If in 1920 and in 1929 loans were considered to be at a danger point, the above figures should certainly give reassurance as far as conditions at present are concerned. 6.4 U. S. Steel 7.1 Postwar Skids Certain for U.S., Economist Says SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 28 (AP) The country is "definitely head ing into a post-war depression, says Dr. Ira B.

Cross, economist at the University of California. "When it will come or how serious it will be no one can tell," Cross told the Commonwealth Club of California in an address, Trices are going down and no one can stop them. How far they win go a own no one Knows. Cross listed as danger signals: Increase in the number of loans on life insurance policies. Greatly enlarged inventories.

An uptrend in business failures. The Increased number life Insurance policies allowed to lapse. Cross aid government purchas es have been largely responsible for high grain prices and not speculation. The first move to combat inflation, Cross said, should be discon tinuance of government support of agricultural prices. It will not be done, he added, because "this is an election year." Cross doubted that efforts to de crease bank loans, allocate scarce materials or raise interest rates would help control inflation.

San Francisco's birthrate reach ed a new high in 1947, when 751 births were registered. 1 mvm i AT PEDERSEN'S Mahogany Period Design By PAUL H. BROWN During the past week the course oi the stock marKet was desultory indeed and the volume was extremely small. For tne week the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 167.30, off the Rail Average closed at 49.27, up and the Utility Average closed at 31.70. off .05.

Among the factors undoubted ly leading to a decline in agri cultural prices and a somewhat lower rate of business activity has been the operation of restric-tice credit policies on the part of the federal government. Recent banking figures make it clear that the treasury is using its pow ers in the most deflationary man ner possible. The deposits which have been transferred from private hands to the federal government in payment of income taxes have not been left on deposit to the treasury account either with the commercial or Federal Reserve banks but have been' largely used to retire short term securities held by the Federal Reserve banks and have thus contracted the credit base. The power of the treasury department to effect this contraction is at its maximum during the period embracing the January 15 and March 15 tax payment dates and diminishes sharply thereafter. An offsetting factor has been the con tinued acquisition of gold, and the purchase of government bonds in pursuance of the policy to maintain the 2 per cent rate on long term governments.

In spite of a determined effort it would appear that the govern ment cannot maintain a dimin i 1 ibnea money supply for any lengtn or time. GO) DEN BEAR lee VALLEJO, Feb. 28 (AP) The training ship Golden Bear is "right on schedule" on its goodwill mission to Europe. The ship sailed from Gibraltar today en route to Marseille. Captain R.

M. G. Swany notified Commodore Russell M. Ihrig, commandant of the California State Maritime Academy here, that it would reach the French port, on March 2. Swany reported the cadet crew in "good shape." The Golden Bear is carrying food and clothing donations from California to France, Greece and Italy in place of its scheduled training cruise to South America.

The cablegram irom Swany made no mention of the seaman transferred at sea from an American merchant ship for an emerg ency appendectomy aboard the Gelden Bear. The seaman, not identified, was to have left the ship at Gibraltar. Local Air Traffic Exhibits Increase Southwest Airways' January passenger traffic out of Sonoma County Airport showed an increase of 43 per cent over that, of last February, Del Marsh, local station manager, announced yesterday. February, 1947, was the first month of the station's operation. Air mail and express also joined the upward trend with a definite increase being noted in the numbers of each.
