Q-R5 Mate! Once upon a time, during one of the Hungarian championships, Von Balla was playing Breyer. Both players were hunched over the board. Suddenly Von Balla looked up excitedly: "Mate in two!" he crowed. The spectators all stared at Breyer. He looked rather bored, but otherwise showed no reaction.

Astonished, Balla stared at the position again, and to his horror, found that the mate in two did not exist! How 0 FOR A 'SWIMMING FINE' DAY SAN FRANCISCO, May 15 (AP) A ringing demand for complete freedom for man's ideas the world over closed the first Pacific regional conference on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization here today. Some 3,000 delegates from seven Western states, Alaska and Hawaii ended their three-day session in the San Francisco Opera House with addresses by Dr. George D. Stoddard, president of the University of Illinois, and Dr. Margaret Mead, author and anthropologist.

Stoddard announced a set of principles adopted by the section on communications which he described as a working program for peace that is "the heart of UNESCO." Simp-ly put, these principles say that there should be no control over the spreading of ideas if peace is to come, because ien must learn enough about each other to live together peacefully. Stoddard noted that Russia is among those nations which have not joined UNESCO, but expressed hope the Soviet Union would be able to accept its principles and join later. He warned that Americans should keep their own house in order. Dr. Mead urged the delegates to stick to plain talk when they go home.

Otherwise, she indicated, they may get the same blank stares from plain citizens that greet the gobbledygook of governments and diplomatic ever, after further study, he found the solution. "Mate in three!" he shouted, more excited than ever. But Breyer still looked bored. Crestfallen Balla turned back to the position, grew pale. There was no mate in three, either! What to do? He studied and studied.

Suddenly he came to a conclusion. The spectators hung on his words. "I resign," he whispered. "fei-rCl White to play and mate in two moves. Solution to Problem No.

The Canadian champion, Abe Yanofsky, is going to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. And most likely participate in tournaments in Europe during his vacations.

His studies will take him five years. A book, giving all the games in the world championship will soon appear, with notes by Yanofsky. It will sell at a very reasonable price.
