Page 2 Dec. 26, 1950 18 Barges Break Loose on River New Orleans, IP-- Eighteen barges broke loose on the Mississippi river Tuesday in a heavy fog and smashed into three ships before they were captured 21 miles below New Orleans. They ripped a hole in the 100- foot, wooden freighter, El Riot, and tore her loose from her dock. Marine Gerica, one of her owners, said she was caught near Braithwaite, and was being towed back to New Orleans harbor. Braithwaite is 20 miles below New Orleans.

Two barges were captured above Braithwaite. The Coast Guard Cutter Hudson leporl- ed that the other 16 had been beached about a i below Braithwaite. The barges slightly damaged the new Majestic, a sister ship that lying alongside the El Rito. I The S. S.
