(AP) Quarterback Art Schlichter fired two touchdown passes to end Gary Williams and plunged for another score himself Saturday as he guided ninth-ranked Ohio State to an easy 48-16 rout of outmanned Michigan State.

Placekicker Vlade Janakievski booted two field goals, reverse quarterback Bob Atha notched two late touchdowns and tailback Calvin Murray raced for 115 yards to pace the Buckeyes' powerful ground attack. Ohio State remained atop the Big 10 standings by rebounding from an opening MSU score a 34-yard pass from quarterback John Leister to Tony Gilbert to tie the score and then slowly pull away. But Ohio State quickly showed it could play that game. It moved 68 yards in six plays with Schlichter firing a perfect 38-yard bomb to Williams to knot the score. The emotionally charged up Spartans fought OSU to a draw for one quarter, but then found themselves outmuscled on the ground and often picked apart by Schlichter In the air.

Ohio State is now 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten, while MSU is 1-7 and wlnless in five conference games. The Buckeyes put the game away in the second quarter, outscoring Michigan Stale 17-3. The Hawkeyes scored consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter after Wisconsin had taken 7-6 lead, then turned to its defense. Iowa grabbed a 13-7 lead when Mark Bortz fell on a fumble in the end zone in the second quarter. After Wisconsin punted, Gales hit Chappelle streaking down the sideline for a score and the Hawkeyes' longest pass play of the year. Iowa sent its record to 3-5 and 3-2 in the conference. Wisconsin last in the league in scoring fell to 2-6 and 1-4.

Hawkeye freshman J.C. Love Jordan returned the opening kick 57 yards, and five plays later Jeff Brown ran 21 yards for a touchdown. Later in the quarter, the Badgers capitalized on a 52-yard run by Kyle Borland on a fake punt to go ahead 7-6. Then Dave Mohapp ran five ards for a score and Mark Doran cked the extra point. Lon Olejnlczak booted a 20-yard field goal for Iowa in the third quarter and reserve quarterback Jess Cole threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Craig Fredrick with 18 left.
