Next week the new models now on display here will be formally presented through advertisements in thousands of daily newspapers all over the country.

This week the local Plymouth dealers are showing Edwardsville motorists a complete sample display of body styles listed for the new 1939 line. The new Plymouths shown here confirm forecasts from the industry that stronger "eye appeal" would be a feature of automobile designs for 1939. They are said to be the biggest Plymouths ever built, with a longer wheelbase of 114 inches and sweeping improvements in riding comfort, interior lujfUry, safety and performance. Heading the list of Plymouth innovations for next year are new-type coil springs of Amola steel that give a 20 per cent softer ride; new remote control gear shift on the steering column; new high-torque engine performance; new "true-steady" steering; a new all silent auto-mesh transmission and an ingenious new safety feature--a "safety signal" speedometer 'that flashes warning lights of different colors at various car speeds. A bigger, more powerful-looking hood now presents an added 10-inch sweep of painted surface that curves around the new radiator grille.

A new, Vee-type windshield adds more lhan six inches to body length above the belt. Over-all length is now 182 inches, without bumpers, and the new 114- inch is two inches longer than last year. This years' grille is a new development of the latest horizontal pattern, and introduces the "lateral airfoil" motif. A rich pattern of crom- ium strips and parallel louvres in body color curve slighty forward each side of a bright center strip, then sweep back like an airplane fuselage to form the sides of the hood. The slight forward curves add radial highlights to the car's "face" along the center strip, and strike a new note of sparkling brilliance In grille design.

Eleven chromium bars accent the contour of the grille louvres in a curved pattern-like the tall, I sharp prow of the familiar Plymouth September 15,1938. A (pedal meeting of the dty Cmm- clle of the City of Edwardivflle. was held in the City Hill on Thursday, September 15, 1938. Meeting was called to order by Mayor Win. C.

Elmer Carter being The call of the meeting was for the purpose of rescinding the resolution, which had beat previously passed by the City Council; on Friday, September 9, 1938 and which had tentatively awarded the contract for the reconstruction of U. S. Highway No. 66, Section 4-C. in Edwardivflle, Illinois to the Madison Construction Company of this city, and also for the purpose of authorizing and empowering the Mayor and City Clerk to re- advertise for bids, be opened at 7:00 p.

m. on September 26, 1938, for the said proposed reconstruction. The City Clerk then read the following: WAIVER OF NOTICE AND CON' SENT TO MEETING "We, the undersigned, being all of the members of the City Council of the City of Madison County, Illinois, do hereby jointly and severally waive notice and purpose of a special meeting of the City Council of said City, to be held the 15th day of September, 1938 at 7:00 o'clock p. m. at the City Hall in said City and consent to the holding of such, meeting and to the transaction of any and all business that may come before such meeting.

I mean specialty bands like the Raymond Scott Quintet or the SchniekelfritKS that jam a movie set with visitors from other and set everybody on the lot to jittering. This band is diferent, of course, being a sort of blend between Scott's modernism and the Schnickelfritzes' corn.

Your correspondent Is strictly an alligator on the groove stuff, but I get along all right with swing if it has a discernible melody. And it Is easy to tell what this Matty Malneck is playing. Malneck was Paul Whiteman's arranger for nearly 12 years, and that back ground of jazz-classicism obviously has helped him to rationalize swing music. Besides his treatment, the novelty of his work depends on his choice of instruments, of which there are eight. Malneck himself uses a fiddle.

Unique for swing is the single brass, a trumpet Also there's a harp. And a drummer who patters on a piece of cardboard. The trumpeter is quite a trumpeter, being Manny Klein, the tootling idol of some millions of eastern swing fans. Klein doesn't belong to the right union out here, but Malneck gets around that by paying a standby movie trumpeter as much as he pays Klein. The harpist is Joe Qu in tilt, who used to twang with the Cincinnati Symphony before AI Goodman lured him HQton Detect, a little Harpe Marx.

The guitarist It Marsh, an Fisher, a 17-year-oM kid just out of high school. Although they've been organized for five months, MabiecVi group has not yet made a public appearance. However, they have made several records. Bing Crosby it so stricken with them that he recorded Gershwin's "Summertime" to their music. Also and there are others coming up.

Besides arranging, Malneck writes tunes. Two of Go tor That" mid "Let's Dream uvthe --are being features in Paranwunt'l "St. Louis Blues" and will be sung by Dorothy Lamour. Director Roal Walsh didn't quite like the lyrics that somebody hashed up for the "Moonlight" tune, so sat down and wrote new ones. It's hard to believe.

in Edwardsville, niinpis. Roll call, nine ayes. Moved by Michei, seconded by Grebel, to adjourn. Roll call, nine ayes. Approved: WM STRAUBE, Mayor worrier in the band because he's afraid something will happen to his harp, and he doesn't like the way grips and electricians move things around the set of "St.

Louis Blues," which is the picture they're working in. The harp cost 53000, and they say Quintili sleeps with it. Ralph Hansell, the drummer is real ly a very good man on the traps anc marimba and xylophone and such but he doesn't do much with those orthodox instruments now that he has taken up cardboard playing. It's jusl an old piece of corrugated paper box and he tickles it with flyswatters. Occasionally, when overtaken by i creative frenzy, he swishes the back his chair or the top pfjthe piano Malneck at Paramount, he worked for Walt Disney, doing rythmical sound effects.

When the Dorsey brothers were stil playing together, Bob Van Eps wa their pianist He's now holding down that seat with Malneck. Manny Stein, who whops the bullfiddle, also has played with some of the famoui popular orchestras. Malneck, though, it may not sounc like it, doesn't care about the pas records of his men, for two of them have had little experience. Many of his arrangements feature the aecordian playing of 19-year-old A man had. this to say about ach: "I like spinach 'and I'm glad i I don't like it, because if I liked it I'd eat it, and I hate the blamed stuff." 1 MMEU MAKE MONEY WITH AN thaa pay fcr Stew ud ukM (M4 pfctam rm an dirt, nlojr F)te co.li Icn thin pnnr plctMt wteabuftfilBtewt T.k«.

PHONE 100 Attest: (SEAL) EDW POOS, City Clerk ship. At the narrow base of the four louvre sections and their chromium accents are repeated at each side, on the front flare of the broad apron that joins the two massive fenders in front. The new Plymouth front end again, shows the influence of airplane design in the way grille and hood flow into the fenders in smooth, round lines. Just like the modern airliner's cabin curves smoothly into the wing, so Plymouth's new design now eliminates angular contact between fenders and other sheet metal. The headlamps and tail lights are now streamlined into the fenders, which are much more massive and have a stronger forward slope.

The bigger hood remains the same type as before, with top panels only hinged for service, water and oil. A twist of the handle raises up one top section part way for convenience in lifting, and an automatic spring holds the panel in open position. The hood side panels are rigid for additional stiffness, and have one section on each side that is securely fastened but easily removable when more "elaborate service is required. Hood louvres arc located on after part of hood side panels for better ventilation, and repeat the horizontal airfoil motif of the grille, The louvres are accented by two parallel chrome strips above and below the vents. The interior color scheme this year is a rich walnut brown, with color accents of Casino red at the instrument board and on the steering wheel.
