The little straw hat Lu sported at Birkdale became his trademark. Every time he hit a good shot, he raised it to the applauding crowds.

But in practice for the British Open championship at Muirfield this week, Mister Lu was bare-headed and passed almost unnoticed among the fans craning for a glimpse of such stars as Trevino and favorite Jack Nicklaus. "I not care about that," said the smiling Formosan. "Last year I used my hat to return friendliness of Birkdale gallery because at that time I not speak English well. Now I am better." Mister Lu shot a two under par 69 in one of his practice rounds over Muirfield's windswept course and said afterwards: "If it rains, I get another hat. But I think I play better without one." (AP) Dale Drake, whose automotive company builds the racing engines that have dominated the Indianapolis 500, had died at the age of 70.

Drake died suddenly of a heart attack after entering St. Joseph's Hospital in nearby Orange Monday night, a spokesman said. Since 1946 he had headed the company building the Offenhauser engine, a four-cylinder engine that has been winning races since the early 1920s and powered the winning car at Indianapolis this year. Since World War II, Offenhausers--called Drake Offys after Drake took sole control of production in 1965-have won Indy in all but six years, 1965-67 and 1969-71. Drake worked as a mechanic on the Indianapolis racers driven by Louis Meyer, who won Indy in 1928, 1933 and 1936.

At that time virtually all the race cars were powered by Offenhauser engines. In 1946 Drake and Meyer bought out Offenhauser and formed the Meyer Drake Engineering Co. to produce the engines. Drake changed the company's name to Drake Engineering and Sales Co. after he gained sole control of the firm.

Drake's son, John, is president of the company. Drake is survived by his widow, Eve, his son, John, and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were pending. Fischer Attacks But Spassky Has Early Chess Edge REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP)- Bobby Fischer made his opening assault on the Soviet Chess fortress Tuesday night, but world champion Boris Spassky repelled it and left the American with a tough fight for a draw when their first game was adjourned. The first game of history's richest world chess title match was called after 40 moves and 3 hours and 34 minutes of play.

It will resume Wednesday at 1 p.m. EDT, or 5 p.m. Reykjavik time. NORTH PACE BLVD JUST NORTH OF TOWN COUNTRY PLAZA Between Pros, Amateurs Tennis Truce to Be Resolved Today HELSINKI, Finland (AP) A truce between professional and amateur tennis factions, which will again bring about open competition, is expected to be formally sealed here Wednesday. The International lawn Tennis Federation, opening its general meeting, said a letter from Lamar Hunt, head of the World troupe of Dallas, Championship outline Tennis con- is ditions of a joint agreement, is be accepted expecteticult The two warring groups reached a settlement of their differences in London earlier in the year. An ILTF sanction was all that was necessary to bring about a resumption of play between contract pros and other players. The pros under contract to Hunt, including Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Arthur Ashe, Tosy Roche and close to 30 other top tournament performers, had boycotted Wimbledon and other tournaments, such as the U.S.

Open at Forest Hills. Because the formal acceptance didn't come in time, the pros didn't play at Wimbledon, where the men's title was won last week by America's Stan Smith. They're expected to show up at Forest Hills in September. Under the agreement, the pros will control the tournament schedule for the first four months of the season, the ILTF the remaining months. Players may compete as they choose.

center Butch Taylor of Gulf Coast Junior College in Panama City. Taylor averaged 20.5 points and 18 rebounds last season in leading the Commodores to a 32-5 record and a third-place finish in the national junior college tournament. The third-team JuCo AllAmerican has been a man in Gulf Coast state championships the past two years and Jacksonville coach Tom Wasdin thinks he is in the mold of former Dolphin centers, Artis Gilmore and David Brent. "Taylor is a definite asset to us in that we now have a big man to go with six high school All-Americans coming up off the freshman team," said Wasdin. pawns for Fischer; a king, three pawns and a bishop for Spassky.

U.S. grandmaster Robert Byrne said: "Fischer is going have trouble making a draw. I don't see how Spassky can lose." Svetozar Gligoric, the Yugoslav grandmaster, commented: "It is doubtful whether black can save a draw." Fischer is playing the black pieces and Spassky the white. which means the Russian had the first move. Yefim Geller, the Russian who seconds Spassky, watched the final moves on closed circuit television in the corridor, sipping a cup of coffee.

"What do you think, Grandmaster Geller?" he was asked. "I am not thinking, I am drinking coffee," Geller replied. Fischer has played Spassky five times in the past. The three times he played the black pieces he lost. Playing white he was able to salvage two draws, but has never triumphed over the Soviet.

Spassky made his first move Tuesday all by himself in the shadowless illumination of the stage at Reykjavik's Sports palace. There was something surrealistic about the world championship series with prize money of about $300,000 dollars starting with only one man sitting at the chess table. Fischer, as usual, was late. He arrived seven minutes after Spassky moved his queen's pawn and referee Lothar Schmid pressed the button to start Fischer's clock. The game went cautiously at first, with the players alloted hours each to make 40 moves.

The experts said Fischer was trying for a draw by exchanging pieces, simplifying, trying to reduce the advantage Spassky had by choosing the opening. He galloped his bishop down a long black diagonal, snatching up a Spassky pawn. In a few moves the bishop was trapped. In the exchange, cher lost the bishop for two pawns. Byrne called it a blunder.

But if it was a blunder it was a an attempt to inject life- -and perhaps victory-into an apparently stalemated game. The Rev. William Lombardy, a Franciscan Roman Catholic priest who acts as Fischer's second, said when the game was adjourned: "It's a difficult position to analyze. "Since I'll have to analyze it for Bobby before the adjourned match resumes probably shouldn't say It's really tough tough because it nas two armor belts of steel under the tread.
