NEW SOUTHWEST service into the Pacific Southwest, slated originally to start Feb. 19, has been set ahead to March' 1, the airline announced.

The firm's president, John H. Connelly, explained the brief postponement resulted from Western Air Lines' petition to reopen the case. The Civil Aeronautics Board denied the application for an exemption order to extend its San Diego-El Cen-tro segment to Phoenix. With that out of the way, Southwest will launch its service to Yuma and Ajo, on the March 1 date, the announcement said Just to give an idea of airliner service these days, Pan --ican World Airways reports: "Carrying everything from an orchid to a stone crusher, Pan-American flew 37,299,083 revenue miles in 1949, an increase of 3,458,425 ton miles over 1948. Color television receiving sets are in some homes notably that of FCC members and Blair House, where President Truman and his family live. The receivers, loaned by the Columbia Broadcasting System, pick up experimental broadcasts. FCC is preparing to conduct more hearings on the color issue, to decide whether to give color A similar verbal orchid came during the week from Art Schilder, Ukiah businessman, president of the Redwood Empire Association, and first president of the association's aviation unit. Art left his Ercoupe at home and was traveling by automobile when he put in at the field for his first visit since the administration building received its "face lifting," and installation of the segmented directional circle around the te-trachedron wind indicator and the new beacon light on the main hangar. "A grand series of improvements, everything looks fine," he said.

THE CIVIL Air Patrol has been busy during the stormy weather period. Santa Rosa Squadron No. 1 reports now appointments that include Dr. Carl La Force, founder of the Sebastopol Flying Club, as executive officer; Jim Merwin public information officer; John Gardner, communications officer, and Lt. Hank Davis op-pointed to Group Six headquarters staff.

A temporary change in commanding officers of the squadron took place, too, when Lt. Guy Grosse took a leave of absence, and Capt. Wilbur Cake, group commanding officer, took over in an acting capacity. THE WEATHER put a crimp in flying activities during the week. Sunday- and Monday saw some air activity.

By Wednesday, however, things were humming all day and until 11:30 at night with Art Janssen, Sebastopol, and Tony Ciphert, Santa Rosa, holding down the night side. Thursday's fog "socked in" things again. But in spite of adverse flying weather 61 rtan-sients visited the field and several students were able to get in tests. Solo flights of the weeTc were handled by Charles Parker, Santa Rosa, and Warren Miller, Windsor. In between poor visibility periods Robert Rodgers, Calistoga, made a cross country hop to Rio Vista, Buchanan Field at Concord and the Napa television space on the air for commercial operations.

Lacking formal announcement from CAA officials at either the San Francisco district or the Los Angeles regional office, Walter G. Attwell, county airport engineer, and Harrison Mecham, superintendent of the field, see in the allocation report possibility that one phase of a three-part county request, for improvement may be in the "soon-to-be-approved" stage. The crash house will cost $3,600, of which the federal government's share would be 54 per cent, or $1,942.

It is that figure that leads the county officials to believe that the application may have been split into units in the allocation. The overall project, including the crash house, an auxiliary office building, which for the time being will house the night man at the field, and installation of the Southwest Airways purchased ceiling light projector, totals $7,829, or which the county's share would be $3,595.19 and the government portion Plans for the proposed improvements have been in hands of the CAA for several months. Latest word received by Superintendent Mecham was that the regional office at Los Angeles was studying them. MEANWHILE, the county field, its recent improvements and its method of operation drew plaudits from two officials the past week. Supervisor K.

The whole future of television, both color and black and white, is involved: FCC is not satisfied with pres ent arrangements for black and white television. She walked into the police station and reported her automobile was missing. Ten minutes later she was back. The car, she explained, was safe and sound. She had just forgotten where she had parked it. FCC also has determined that it is going to protect, as far as it can, the "public's investment in monochrome television sets.

Four million television receivers have been purchased. It is likely their value would decline if color went on the air. That is, unless the present sets could be adapted to receive color or convert it into By JOAN SHAW The Woodchuck, Marmot, or Groundhog as he is usually called, was in the limelight recently because Feb. 2 was "Groundhog Day." Until this year, "Groundhog Day" didn't mean much to me. But now that "Mortimer the Groundhog" is one of our pets I figured on learning first hand just what Groundhogs really do on the day named for them.

"Mortimer" has been irf hibernation since October and he spent "his" day very much asleep. He didn't venture out to see whether or not there was a shadow. We are still in a quandry about' "late" or "early" Spring because "Mortimer" lives in a cage in the barn. Besides there hasn't been any sun ven if he did venture out! GROUNDHOGS are little, rodent-like animals about the size of a cat. They have lovely tawny coats with yellow underparts and short, flat tails.

Anyone travelling In the mountains is familiar with these little animals sunning themselves on the rocky slides and letting out ear-piercing whistles when any sign of danger is near. They warn their own colony and every wild animal within earshot. They are not very popular with deer hunters. Because of their great shyness and distrust of humans they do not make very satisfactory pets even when captured when quite young. "Mortimer" is gentle enough until someone gets a finger too close and then he nips with determination.

In their wild state, they live on meadow grasses and are vegetarians. In captivity they will accept a variety of things, including all sorts of table scraps. "Mortimer" fcas a great liking for canned dog food. black ana wrute. To be sold on the idea, however, FCC says it must be shown that such adapt ers would be of moderate price.

jit i What would happen if color television in the next few months were given commercial broadcasting permits? Some observers say ENGINE MVLjmmi "ROCKET" there would be a great boom in color telecasting. If present monochrome receivers could not be inexpensively modified the manufacture of color receiving sets would surge ahead. The result could be a stagnation of black and white, with loss to both owners of sets and to vested interests in the business. The development of color television would not be pushed, say some of the observers, but manufacturers would just exploit the present possibilities. If a dog bites anyone on the street it is, of course, a misdemeanor. The fact that the dog carries a license does not give it the right to run at large if it is known that he is in the habit til biting people. If you know of such a dog and know his owner, very often a talk with the person will have the desired effect. If this is not satisfactory, the best method is to report it to the chief of por lice. He can, if he thinks it necessary, insist upon the dog wearing a muzzle when on the streets and at all other times be confined to a kennel or yard.
