tEle fficnaacola floimtnl Tuesday, July 4, 1972 2D Major League BoxScores Orioles 15, Tigers 3 Reds' Bench Surpasses Torre in NL Today's Baseball Roundup Paul, 3-2, who blanked the Royals on six hits over the first six innings. Paul, who was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh, struck out six and walked two as he whipped Dick Drago. Braves 13, Astros HOUSTON (AP) Hank Aaron hit his 656th career home run, a three-run shot in Atlanta's five-run seventh, to power the Braves to a 13-9 victory over Houston Monday night that prevented the Astros from taking over first place in the National League West. Atlanta's big inning broke a 6-6 deadlock in a see-saw battle that included 32 hits, 17 for the Braves and 15 for Houston. After Houston pitchers Jim Ray and George Culver loaded the bases on three straight walks, Martv Perez greeted Jim York with a sacrifice fly to drive in the tie-breaking run.

Larry Bowa opened the flurry with a two-base hit, the first of three doubles in the in ning by the Phillies. Don Money singled to score Bowa and Willie Montanez doubled to bring home Money. After Deron Johnson walked, Greg Luzinski singled to make it 3-0 and knock out loser Don Carrithers, 2-6. Joe Lis greeted reliever Frank Reberger with a run-producing double. Rangers 2, Royals 1 KANSAS CITY (AP) Jim Shellenback stymied a Kansas Ctiy rally in the seventh inning and the Texas Rangers held on for a 2-1 American League baseball victory over the Royals Monday night.

Shellenback struck out John Mavberry with Royals on first and second after they had reached reliever Jim Panther for three hits in the inning, including Lou Piniella's run-scoring single. The victory went to Mike lock with a two-run double and Rick Wise, who blasted his 12th career home run, pitched his 10th complete game of the year as streaking St. Louis whipped Cincinnati 4 2 Monday night. St. Louis, baseball's hottest team with seven straight victories and only one loss in the last 15 National League games, overcame a 2-0 Cincinnati lead in the sixth when Wise, 9-7, homered over the left field fence.

Pirates 3, Cubs 2 PITTSBURGH (AP) Willie Stargell walloped his 15th home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning following Vic Davalillo's leadoff bunt single, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3 2 victory over the Chicago Cubs Monday night. The triumph, their third in a row over the Cubs and eighth in 10 meetings, increased the Pirates' lead in baseball's National League East to games over the rained-out New York Mets and dropped the Cubs into a virtual third-place tie with St. Louis, 6V4 games back. Red Sox 8, Twins 2 BOSTON (AP) Luis Tiant, a late replacement for the ailing Sonny Siebert, survived a 58-minute rain delay DETROIT (AP) -The Baltimore Orioles clobbered Detroit pitching for 21 hits, pouring across six runs in the sixth and seven in the eighth, to crush the Tigers 15-3 and move into a tie for first place with the Tigers in baseball's American League east. The run and hit totals were the most devastating this season against the Tigers, who have led or been tied with Baltimore for first since May 30.

It was the third victory for the Orioles in the four-day weekend showdown series and came before a near-capacity crowd of 50,835 and a national television audience. Jim Palmer had no trouble going the distance to pick up his ninth triumph in his last 10 games, lipping his record to 114. Tigers' starter Tom Tim-merman, 6-7, was tagged for four runs in the sixth, with John Oates hitting a solo homer, Brooks Robinson driving in two runs with a bases-loaded single, and Bobby Grich doubling in a run before Palmer poked a two-run single off reliever Chuck Seelbach. Cards 4, Reds 2 CINCINNATI (AP) Ted Simmons snapped a 2-2 dead in the fourth inning and pitched the Boston Red Sox to a 8-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins Monday night. Batterymate Carlton Fisk backed Tiant's eight-hit pitching with his ninth home run and a run-scoring double and Tiant himself drilled a two-run single as the Red Sox wrapped up their fourth consecutive American League baseball triumph by scoring four times in the seventh inning.

Phils 4, Giants 2 PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Left-hander Steve Carlton won his loth game of the National League baseball season Monday night, pitching the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory over San Francisco with a six-hitter. The Phillies scored all their runs before a man was retired in the first inning, bunching all five of their hits right at the start. "So Bobby felt he had to accept. His pride he couldn't go down as a coward." Slater, chairman of Slater Walker Securities, proposed several deals.

In one, all $130,000 would go to the winner, raising the winner's prize to $208,000. However, Fischer took the deal to double the original prize money for the match, which stands at $125,000. The winner would get $156,000 and the loser $104,000, splitting the extra prize money in the same percentage as the original purse. William Lombardy, grandmaster, of New York City, will be Fischer's official second for the match, said Marshall. All along, the issue hasn't been the money, Marshall said.

"It was the principle. He felt Iceland wasn't treating this match or his countrymen with the dignity that it and they deserved. And he was furious about the press censorship. He was flying around the room," said Marshall. Marshall was referring to the three-releases pcr-game limitation which the Icelandic Chess Federation made for reporters covering the match.
