Wednesday, July 5, 1972 The Pensacola News 9B Fischer's apology Man on 707 jet reschedules match surrenders to FBI REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) Bobby Fischer apologized today for delaying the start of his $400,000 chess match with world champion Boris Spassky of Russia. The American, whose dispute over prize money forced organizers to postpone the world championship round, said he had the greatest respect for Spassky as a man and as a player. The statement, prepared by Fischer's lawyers, was read to newsmen by Max Euwe, president of the International Chess Federation-FIDE. It was not known whether this would be sufficient. to overcome, Russian objections the match.

Euwe said later however, the Soviet Chess Federation had cabled him demanding that he call the first game a loss for Fischer because of the American's arrival. This give Spassky a significant but not insurmountable advantage at the outset of the 24-game match. In a statement Tuesday, Spassky said he would consider starting play only if Fischer paid the penalty for his behavior. Spassky told The Associated Press this afternoon he still did not know whether the match would begin on Thursday. He said there would be an announcement by the Russian delegation later.

"We are sorry the world championship was delayed," Fischer's apology began. "My problems were not with Spassky whom I respect as a man and admire as a player." If Spassky and the Soviet people were "distressed or discomfited," Fischer continued. "I am indeed sorry. What Spassky meant when he demanded "just punishment" for Fischer, he would not say. There were unconfirmed reports the Russians wanted Fischer to be penalized with a loss of the first game.

Though some chess officials were pessimistic about the fate of the match this morning, optimism prevailed by midafternoon. If Spassky was ready to walk out of the championships he was not acting like it. Right after lunch he dropped his second. Yefim Geller, and two other aides at the Soviet Embas sy-apparently to consult with Moscow--then drove his borrowed Ford to get its wheel alignment corrected. Spassky appeared calm and would talk about everything except chess.

Country shocked by two murders SAN MARINO (AP) This tiny mountaintop republic, which hadn't had a murder in more than 100 years, has been shocked by a double slaying. Pietro Giorgetti, 35, a taxi driver, burst into police headquarters Monday night and said: "I've just killed two people." "The police said he threw his wife, Pierina, out the window of their third-floor apartment when he found out she had applied for a legal separation from him. Then, they said, he grabbed a hunting rifle, shot his sisterin-law Isolde Zavoli Stolfi to death as she ran downstairs, and then ran down and shot his wife twice in the back as she lay screaming on top of his parked taxi. The couple's two children, Fulvia, 12, and Germano, saw their father throw their mother out the window, police said. 2.

(AP) The need for complete kidney transplants may be reduced by a recently developed operating procedure that allows surgeons to operate on a faulty kidney outside the body, then return it to the patient, a urologist says. The operation and its advantages were outlined by Dr. Clarence Hodges, professor of surgery at the University of Oregon, in a paper presented meeting of Canadian and U.S.

urological specialists here over the weekend. An important feature of the procedure is that the kidney can be replaced at a position in the body other than that from which it was removed, Hodges said. Hodges said he had performed eisht, such operations since 1968 that a total of 35 had been performed around the world. There is no rejection problem. one of the difficulties in straight kidney transplants, because no foreign tissue is involved, he said.
