4B The Pensacola News Friday, October 30, 1970 Early Stutterng Isn't Uncommon disturbance is developing, and I would suggest examination by a neurologist. The other symptoms all could represent hypoglycemia, or episodes of low blood sugar a neurologist would have that in mind, too. For background on what hypoglycemia is and how to control it, send 25 cents in coin and a long self-addressed, stamped envelope and ask for the booklet; "Help for Hypoglycemia (Low Blood of us getting black eyes. Don't start swinging yet! Blue is from a recessive gene, brown is dominant, but the recessive can break through as witness one of the grand-parents with blue eyes. Shades of hazel or green also are possible.

I don't know why there's so much preoccupation with this topic, but there is. One correspondent once sent a long letter and chart to "prove" that two blue-eyed parents couldn't have a brown-eyed child but the chart, when you studied it, disapproved her point. It is possible. When he started talking he didn't stutter, and everyone commented about how plainly he could speak. But now he stutters. Not all the time, though. He will repeat the word "1" four or five times, then continue with the sentence. When he sings, he doesn't stutter.

When he gets overanxious he tends to stutter, but not always. Will he outgrow this? Could it be inherited? If so, would speech therapy help, and if so where could we find a speech therapist? Mrs. J.R.G. Stuttering at the age of 30 months isn't unusual. His thought processes are working faster than he can express them.

He starts with but can't remember or follow through with what he had in mind. Maybe that will help explain to you why he doesn't stutter when he sings. Don't make an issue of this stuttering, because nervous tension isn't going to help matters. Quite the reverse. You should watch the situation, though, and if the trouble persists by the time he is 4 or 5, treatment would be advisable.

Your doctor may be able to refer you directly to a speech therapist. They also can be reached through school systems or through university medical centers. No, stuttering isn't inherited, but both an active mind and a rather tense temperament may be. Dear Dr. Thosteson: Our son, 17, wants some prescription sunglasses he is very near-sighted and wears glasses now.

We would like your opinion whether the sunglasses would be harmful to his eyes. Mrs. T. P. No, they won't harm him.

We have quite a discussion going and don't want it turning into an argument with some DeSoto Destroyed and that C. J. Bell, who I believe was his son-in-law, was the clerk," he said. Frenkel described the hotel as attractive in its heyday. "There was a barber shop inside and a restaurant, if I remember correctly," he said.

Kleiber said the city had no alternative but to condemn the historic DeSoto. "The owner didn't want to repair it, and it was in real bad shape," he said. "The foundation in the rear was giving way." Pensacola Public Services Director Robert M. Ryan said Morris Wrecking Co. has been granted permission to demolish the structure between 8 a.m.

and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. During those time periods, he said, Government Street will be closed between Palafox and Baylen. "It's a real shame," Wentworth reiterated. BANK FINANCING ON Dear Abby by Abigail Van Buren sister admired it, so I gave it to her for a Christmas present and she very proudly hung it on the wall in her living room.

Well, she and her husband recently bought a new home, and they took this landscape painting of mine and put it down in their bar in the cellar among a lot of cartoons and other junky pictures. When I went to their home and saw it there I was heart-broken but said nothing. Can you think of a way I could get my painting back? Disappointed DEAR DISAPPOINTED: The painting is theirs, regardless of where they hang it, but if you want it, offer to paint them a more "appropriate" picture for their bar In exchange for the landscape. I'll bet you get your landscape back. DEAR ABBY: I went with a married man for 10 years.

He said he was married in name only and he promised to leave his wife when their children were on their own. Well, instead of leaving her, he left me. Toward the end I had the feeling that he was a louse so I taped some conversations we had. He said a lot of terrible things about his wife and other men. I have it all on tape.

I would like to get even with him by sending each member of his family a copy of these tapes with his voice saying these things. (He is also a grandfather.) He still doesn't know I have him on tape. Please answer soon as I promise to follow your advice. I feel like a fool for having spent 10 years underground. A Fool DEAR FOOL: Destroy the tapes.

If you were to send them to his family, a lot of innocent people would be Accept your share of the blame for the 10 years you spent underground. Forget the louse and turn over a new leaf. FALL SPECIALS YOUR HOME IMPROVEMENTS Good Health Dr.G. T. Thosteson Dear Dr.

Thosteson: When my husband becomes tired and hungry, he seems to become unsteady in his walk. His thinking processes seem to slow down, and at times his sentences are spoken backward. Are these symptoms of a forthcoming illness or am I worrying needlessly? B.T. Those backward sentences raise in my mind a question of whether some neurological Historic Will Be By BOB DUKE Nw Staff Writer Pensacola's historic DeSoto Building, which once served as a hostelry for such famous theatrical performers as Sarah Bernhardt, John Drew and Richard Mansfield, will pass into oblivion this weekend. Situated at the corner of Government and Palafox Streets, the dilapidated three-story structure is to be demolished Saturday and Sunday by Morris Wrecking Co.

of Mobile. Pensacola Chief Building Inspector Peter Kleiber said the building had been under condemnation for sometime and the owner, Ollie Delchamps of Mobile, had decided against having it repaired. Norman Simons, curator for the Pensacola Historical Museum, and historian T. T. Wentworth Jr.

expressed belief that the DeSoto was constructed shortly after the War Between the States. Simons said records revealed that the structure was known as the Merchants Hotel in 1882 and was owned by a Capt. Jacob Kryger. "Our information indicates that Capt. Kryger charged his guests $2.50 daily for a room in 1882," he said.

Two years later, he said, insurance maps disclosed that the Merchants contained, in addition to rooms on the second and third floors, a billiard parlor, a dining hall and a saloon on the bottom level. "It had an unusual well with a seven-foot elevation and 90-foot depth apparently in a courtyard on the bottom level," Simons said. "It was a beautiful hotel with an entrance on Government." Wentworth said some of the foremost actors and actresses of the time began lodging at the Merchants after the Pensacola Opera House opened its doors in 1883. "It was a favorite spot for the theatrical people who came to Pensacola to perform at the Opera House, which was located nearby," he said. "I don't think there's any doubt that at one time or another the hotel was used by Sarah Bernhardt, John Drew and Richard Mansfield." Wentworth opined that perhaps the Merchants started to decline with the demolition of the Opera House in 1917.

"I really can't say when it ceased to be called the Merchants and became the DeSoto office building," he said. "But its decline may well have been connected with the death of the Opera House." Wentworth bemoaned the fact that so many local historic structures are being razed. "It's a real shame," he said. "Think of what it would mean to Pensacola today if the Opera House had been saved for future generations." Wentworth said the facility, located on the east side of Ferdinand Plaza at Govern-in and Jefferson, was demolished in 1917 after sustaining serious damage during the 1916 storm. "I guess no one thought of trying to save it," he said.

Former Pensacola City Clerk John E. Frenkel Jr. remembers strolling by the old Merchants Hotel on numerous occasioas during the early part of this century. Born in 1893, Frenkel said he recalls visitng the hotel many times while hawking newspapers in 1907. "I remember that Capt.

Jacob Kryger was the owner I HAVE been wanting to write this letter for a long time, so here goes. I feel so hurt when my husband dances cheek-to-cheek with all the tall girls in our crowd because I am barely 5 foot and he is 6 foot 4, and he can't dance cheek to cheek with me. Shorty DEAR SHORTY: Find a short man In your crowd and dance cheek-to-cheek with HIM. He has the same problem. WHAT should a guy do when he thinks he is in love with a girl who will date him only during the week but never on the weekend? Every weekend she says she is busy with her girl friends, or her family.

Also when I take her to a movie or to dinner during the week she always brings her mother or a girl friend. I don't mind this once in a while, but not all the time. Can you advise me? Confused DEAR CONFUSED: How old are you? And how old ii she? If she is old enough to date without a chaperone, there is no need for her to bring her mother or a girl friend along on a date. If I were you, I would look for another girl. I think you are being had.
