1 a 4 Vv" if Li Renaissance Man Goes Mod What do the young people want in a program? "Romeo and Juliet' the latest version is the popular thing today dedication of love stronger, more honest than ever. Young people can really understand this. It's their tremendous feeling, their togetherness, the same things 'Mod Squad' tries to project, that makes the program popular. Parental influences aren't conductive to people getting along there's a great deal of hypocrisy and the young see through it, can't tolerate it, and band together in search of something better." Is there a main theme to 'Mod Squad'? "Definitely a story with a message sounds trite, but this show tries to encourage understanding of parents and children. I represent the establishment to three young drifters who were convinced to try to help their own generation through law enforcement.

I try to get across that the oldsters might be mad at the young people, but like them and want to help them." Is he satisfied with his role? "I wouldn't want to play a typical policemanthe shirt-sleeved, family-ridden cop this is a stereo-type, not a character. 'Mod Squad' portrays the ideal policeman concerned; dedicated to human beings, not a reputation; intelligent. I portray the new era of the policeman trained for chief in a big city well-educated, late twenties age-wise, no resentment of changing times. It's a continuation of the role at home a father, big brother image. We decided the best way to go with the role was to make me unmarried different from most police shows.

There were some great scripts 'An Eye for an Eye', my idea, has me falling in love. This job now is as good as there is on TV for someone like me who wants someday to direct." Is Tige Andrews a good actor in Tige Andrews' opinion? "If the material is excellent, I'm that way you just naturally put more of yourself into simulating material. When there's something good, you do your homework. Sometimes I'm bad, fair at others, good at times, excellent. I think I'm a likeable person on the screen.

When you're in a home every week, the more likeable you are, the better chance you have of being invited back. In a series, likeableness is far more important than excellence in acting." Division, Andrews graduated from New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He played summer stock then debuted on Broadway in "Hidden Horizon" in which he played six parts and sang. The Horizon escaped detection the play ran two nights. John Ford hired Andrews when he played a dual role as Schlemmer and Insignia in the original production of "Mr. Roberts." Andrews and Henry Fonda were the only Broadway cast members Ford selected for the movie version where Andrews played Wiley.

Andrews visited Pensacola for the filming or Ford's "Wings of Eagles" after which he became personal assistant to Ford in "Seven Women." Live TV shows were his forte in New York when he wasn't taping Gander in Phil Silvers' "Sgt. Bilko" series or a detective in Robert Taylor's "Detectives." Back on stage, Andrews was the street singer in "The Three-Penny Opera," later the lead and introduced the song "Mack the Knife." "Ticklish Acrobat" was his off Broadway chance and he toured New York, San Francisco and Hollywood asMacBeth. The actor is a collector anything made by hand, stamps, coins, Early Americana, theatrical and film memorabilia and raw land. He paints, sculpts, swims, rides, plays golf and thinks of becoming a director. What does he think of Mod Squad? (WEAR-TV, Channel 3 in Pensacola, Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.) "I wonder why nothing like 'Mod Squad' has been done before.

Roth kids and parents approve of the show because it presents both sides of the communications breakdown and the need for everyone to take time to understand everyone else." Is the purpose of Mod Squad to entertain and capture high ratings or to enlighten the public? "Any writer worth his salt, whether it's TV, movies or the great American novel, enlightens as well as entertains. Someone writes a comedy it's funny. So what? A good writer is good because he can't help but say something. In view of the new shows, will Mod Squad make it for a third season? "The show has a chance of becoming a perennial thing if we keep up with the times we have to tell what's happening today for the 15 to 35 year olds even those younger and much older. But, we can't tell 1940 stories anymore and get away with it.

There must be something all the ime for the young people to relate to." i.w-f- I ft'fwf 5. 4 wmiim Jit f-t' 4 MSmmiSk Iff rr 0y ea rv I 1 vh A CLARENCE WILLIAMS III spokesman for black MICHAEL COLE he cares PEGGY UPTON delightful SDQ'EEN JMAGI.
