I -i 1 I Fabkwell Bbskfit or Ashi WArri.ar-Tha benefit of Miss Waits Iat evening waa a splendid sac- cem, the hou having been one of the best of the aes-l son. The principal cnaraciers uww wo rollea were splendidly rendered by Mr.

Leak and the halarr. and elicited frequent and hearty auplseaa. I The play, however, waa eenoaary 1 (pacta, jar. v. r.

iesrww, ww uu mm, without eivini one word of notice, took It la to his bead to laevs the city in the afternoon for New Tot, thni involving th necessity of aabstitnttng' another for his part at the last moment Mr. Robert HcWtde kindly eonsented to undertake the unpleasant task of appearing oa the stage in a charaCsr which he had not had time area to look over. He la entitled to the thanks of alL We propose to say a word concerning the coarse of Mr. DvGroet. last night waa the third time that gesv gentleman had been guilty of leering the theatre, when east for parts, without any apparent cause, and without any earthly excuse.

On each former occasion an apology was made to the audience, resort being had to the never falling exense of sickness, and on each occasion the clemency of the management was begged, and the delinquent wss restored to his position. We hope we shall bear no mora of Mr. De Groat oa oar boards. He is a good actor, bat he baa also shown himself to be a very unreliable one. There were other drawbacks to the evening's enter, tainmant, one of which might as well be noticed, vis: that aside from the characters of Louise, Henri, and those performed by Mr.

and Mrs. Fisher snd Mrs. Moore, none of the actors appeared to have the remotest knowledge of the parts they were attempting to play. In the ballet of the School man ter, Messrs. Donaldson and Ashley excited the risibilities of the audience to the highest pitch.

In parting with Miss Walte we bnt give utterance to the sentiments of all, in wishing her all success and prosperity commending her to the favorable consideration of those among whom, for the season, she will pursue her profession. Thb Alteration ok Trkasukt NOTKS.f-, Notwithstanding the caaUoa given to the public thai some expert manipulators were making a lucrative trade of changing the denominations of greenbacks from smaller to larger amounts, we hear of people in different localities being duped and cheated for want of a Utile care, and encouragement Is thus given to the rogue and swindlers to continue their nefarious practices. The only wsy to prevent the successful preee-cntlon of this swindle Is by our citizens making themselves acquainted with the more distinguishable features of the various denominations of notes S's, 6's, 10, art's and 50'. This is an easy matter, especially ss it is to the larger denominations that scrutiny is more particularly called. The difference is very marked.

The ten has an oval portrait of Mr. Lincoln in the centre of the left hand margin the one represents in the left hand top margin Mr. Secretary Chase. The ten may be also easily distinguished by Its having a spread eagle on the upper centre, and oa the left hand margin the figure of a female stamped with a red seal. The ones are not so marked.

The flgure representing the value of the bills In dollars are covered with figures of greater amount, stamped oa very light tissue paper, ingeniously pot on. One sure means of detecting the spurious ten or fifty is in this way along the margin of the notes are borders, or small parallel lines, in -which the denomination of the note is set forth in many figures. In the false notes these figures are obliterated by green marks, which at once proclaim the beat Those who are careless enough to allow themselves to be duped had better put up with the loss for detection in attempting to pass one of these altered note, no matter how innocently it came into their hands, might lead them to most unpleasant results. Thb Coxscrift'b Benefit. If there be not a crowded house at the theatre tonight, then the people of Buffalo are not the folks we take them for.

The performance is for the benefit of Mr. M. M. Lawrence, the door-keeper, who waa conscripted one day, and are to go for the procurement of a substitute for that clever and courteous young gentleman. The attractions, are manifold.

Among the "stars" announced to appear are: J. M. McCuMuui, the leading man at the Oeveland Academy of mutc; Mr. B. McCaulay, a Buffalo boy and a favorite, at present stage manager of the Louisville theatre Miss Jennie Hoainer, formerly of this city, and now of McVlcker's Chicago; Miss Rachel Noah, Mrs.

Eate Ward, tc In addition to the above aqe Billy Allen, Madame Zoe, the pretty dan-sense, Mons. Yates, and Donaldson, the pantomlmist K. Clark, the popular vocalist, will also lend bis valuable aid. The programme for the evening Is as follows: Othello, with the following cast: Othello, J. ('.

McCnllum; Iago, B. McCaulay; Kmille, Miss Jennie Hosmer; Desdamona, Miss Rachel Noah, support ed by the entire stock company. "Essence of old Vlr-glnny," Billy Allen; Ballad, Mis. Eate Ward; Paa da Boquette, Mile. Marie Zoe and Mons.

B. Yates. Mr. E. K.

Clark will sing the popular ballad, Vine Amrr-ufuf, and Mr. Donaldson will appear aa Jacques in "The Conscript." At 7 o'clock in the evening Mr. Donaldson will make an ascension from the theatre to the roof of the building opposite on a single rope. Chbonicles of the Twenty-First Kegi-MXHf. The work is most tastefully gotten up, and will, when completed, constitute a volume of which every member and friend of the noble old regiment may justly feel proud. It win be completed in twenty semi monthly parts, each part to contain from oue to eight portraits. The number before na contains a life-like lithograph of Col.

The Xxpreet says: ''The boys tmaressea near tne onoge ana ww trat about twenty feet, till they reached the spot where the channel has been dredged out to the depth of ten or twelve feet, when both suddenly sunk. Thebrldge-tender, who saw them go under, rushed to the spot ac- companled by several others, and made every effort to find them. It would seem that neither rose to the anr- face, and both were doubtless soon swept beyond reach by the current The place where these boys test' their lives is a most dangerous one, and several others have been drowned there.

We hope the boys general ly will take warning from this melancholy occurrence, aed seek a safer bathing place In future." CIlVaiOKE BEING BEATICT PLAN OF ATTACK. Special to the Herald. WABHUfOTOX, Aug. 18. Last week one of our scouts crossed th river United States Ford, and took dinner with some of the rebels upon the Cbaacellorsv-iUe battle ground.

A large gang of negroes was employed in getting out timber for the construction of bridges. i The reports in circulation among the rebels were to the effect that U. and Banks' fords were to be bridged so as to enable Lee to make rapid advance upon Dumfries and Fairfax, thereby cutting off our communication with Washington, and forcing us to attack him. Whether such a movement is still contemplated the enemy or "not, remains to be determined, bnt it Is generally believed in-military circles that Lee will avail himself of the opportunity now offered br the decimated on-1 dition of our army to make desperate effort the destruction of the of the Potomac. It is not at all improbable that the rob-1 will attack us and we may yet have the an-' uual struggle upon the plains of Manassas and Bull Kun.

Affairs at Ontreville remain quiet. Gen. King has been searching energetically Mosby, and has at length succeeded in driving him beyond the Blue Ridge. The notorious guerrilla chief is now in the Shenandoah valley, where he has been joined White's gang. The probabilities are that the guerrillas will not now escnpe.

Our cavalry is close upon them, and unless unusually good fortune attends them they cannot evade us. The Tribune's Washington specials slate: It understood that important dispatches, showing the complicity of the Executive of New York and others with the rioters, have been received by the authorities, here. It is thought that (Governor Seymour will not persist in following the mistaken course into which be was beguiled by the Woods and their party. Out of twenty4wo deserters who had arrived a house near- the Eastern Branch, Maryland, seventeen were eaptured today by Pro. vost Marshal and confined in the Central Guard rjonse.

These men were to escape, and sell themselves as substitutes in the northern States. Special to the Herald. Benjamin F. Hall, late chief justice of Colorado territory, has accepted the appointment of consul at Valparaiso. This office was some time ago conferred on Ex-Governor Harding, of Washington, who now takes the place vacated by Judge Hall.

Thus they have exchanged offices. Flag-ship Dinsmors, off Charleston, August 16. I Since Monday, events here have been rather monotonous. We have been exchanging shell and shot with the rebels night and day, probably with but little damage to either side. The enemy's object was to retard General Gilmore'8 Beige works, bnt they have all been perfected for several days.

The intention to open on the 13th was abandoned on account of some difficulty, as to quality of army ammunition, and to serious indisposition of Gen. Gilmore. is however much better and the opening of the heavy seige work will commence at daylight tomorrow- Shore batteries in getting range of guns yesterday and day before, knocked three holes in the walls of Sumter. Ageneral impression prevails that the rebels are evacuating Fort Sumter, and will blow it up as soon as assault commences. Out of nearly 30 guns on the parapets 10 days ago, but 8 now remain, and most of those casemates had previously -disappeared.

The rebels have erected a line of earthworks mile long on James Island from Fort Johnson to Secessionville, although they have but few guns mounted yet. in is is supposed to be the destination of Fort Sumter's guns. Our picket boats around Fort Sumter renort great activity every night wjth schooners, steamers, Jtc, The weather is fine with a verv calm sea, and moHt favorable for operations. ne sun is not, but a (rood sea breeze and oc casional thunder showers. Everything is now in readiness on sea and shore, and all looking forward to the work of tomorrow certain or success.

Reinforcements continue to arrive daily and quite a large army is now on the Islands. On un Wednesday mgbt tee rebels fit ed on our works with grape and cannister. We lost two killed and two wounded. The monitors went up in the night and opened on Fort Wagner, ana toe reoei guns were soon silenced. The Admiral went on board the Patapsco, joining: her under the guns of Wagner, and came near being taken off by a ten inch shot Indica.

tions are that the rebels will depend principally on obstructions and interior line of defen ces. In the attack tomorrow the Ironsides will engage Fort Wagner and keep her silent, whilst the monitors and shore batteries engage Fort Sumter. A wooden fleet and mortar schooners will engage Fort Moultrie. It will re a grand, sight. rne reoel works on James Island indicate an attempt on the part of the rebels to drive Gilmore off James Island or to so annov blm as to interfere with his siege pf 8amter.

The Utica Gazette has following in relation to the approaching State Fair, be held In that city, which we reproduce for the benefit of those interested: The arrangements for the Stale Fair are progressing satisfactorily, and the Indications are most encouraging. Letters received from different sections of State, and also from the Western States and Canada, show that the Exhibition will, in all probability, fully equal to, if not excelling any ever held by the Society.

The number of entries already made are greater than in any previous year up to the same time, the Executive Committee confidently anticipate the display in every department will be fine in deed. The erections are the most complete and perfect in every particular, being greatly superior in every respect to any ever put up for previous exhibitions. Every building will be substantial, and there need be fear of damage to any article by rain. Thin is a great desideratum, as very many people have been deterred in former years from exhibiting Particles of domestic manufacture, on account of insecure buildings. Ladies may now ester articles of the finest construction, with the assurance that they will be as free from harm or damage as in their own dwellings.

There will be ample room for all articles of machinery that may be entered, and it may be interesting to public to learn that several new and valuable Inventions have already been entered for exhibition and competition. The stalls for hordes and cattle will be spacious and constructed, and the display in these departments it is expected, be even greater than in former years. The grounds set apart for the use of the Society are more spacious that ever before provided; and no matter how great a crowd may attend, there will be abundance of room for all. With fair weather, the Exhibi -Hon of 1803 cannot fail to be a perfect success. Circular From Provost Marshal General Fry.
