Hot turkey sandwiches with housemade gravy, clam strip dinners and chicken marsala are among the typical offerings.

Kathy Birkenshaw worked as a waitress at the eatery for 27 years. In January 2011, the restaurant closed. She and her husband, owner of Birkenshaw Electric, bought the place.

So she's gone from employee to owner. THE VIBE: We had some Saturday morning errands to run and a friend, who lives near Somers, guided us to one of her favorite breakfast stops. It is set in the South Field Corners strip mall and still sports the "Plaza Restaurant" sign. Inside is a large dining room and a back room with seats at a counter. It's cozy despite its ample seating area, and is the kind of place locals come and call the waitresses by name.

Comfortable, cozy home THE VERDICT: cooking. THE FOOD: We had a hearty breakfast, but the restaurant serves lunch, dinner and some bakery desserts and ice cream specialties. We had the housemade corned beef hash, served with eggs over easy and toast; housemade quiche with home fries and toast; and eggs and crisp bacon.
