Pensacola Journal Wednesday, May 7, 1969 Jackie Shuns the Chic for There's a new Jacqueline. Gone is the Jackie Kennedy with the studied, perfect coiffure. The right posture has been softened. Haute couture clothes have taken a back seat to sportive fashions. Jackie-0, wife of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, appears relaxed and radiant.

Her long hairdo by Kenneth, rinsed a red-brown, whips in the breeze. When in a mini-skirt mood, she slips into something ultra-short punctuated with leather boots. Then she makes the scene at a post New York restaurant, like The Colony, for all to soak in this fashion independence. Jackie's rigid demeanor, once part of the discipline expected of a First Lady, has now given way to a heretofore unveiled vibrancy. The signs are there.

Aristocrats, royalty, politicians everyone who is socially registered and "Jacqueline has been waiting for Jackie to throw snobby parties. As Daddy0's wife she certainly has the ways and means. But Jackie has shunned hostessing black-tie affairs for folksy goings-on. Currently her outlet is shopping Nassau boutiques wearing typical tourist gear like white trousers and 1 a shirt. When she was in the White House the American fashion industry doted on every move Jackie made. "As Jackie goes, so goes fashion," they said.

Designers hardly ever referred to her as Jackie. She was the "Queen of Elegance," wearing designer clothes with a brand of chic women strove to attain and men idolized. Once in Washington she wore a two-piece red wool dress, side-buttoned a la Balenciaga, and a best-dressed list friend, Mrs. "Babe" Paley, wife of the CBS board chairman, had on the same dress. While "Babe" was en route, Jackie got the word of a possible "look alike" scene and retreated to the White House for a quick change.

Fashion, at that time, was a way of life. And it was strict and limiting. Jackie was a haute couture clotheshorse in those days. Certainly, the Kennedy image was heightened by her glamor. The pinnacle of her power as a fashion plate was clear when President John F.

Kennedy jokingly described himself to Parisians as "the man who brought Jackie to France." The first clue to the clear break with fashion came last Fall when Jackie married Aristotle on the island of Skorpios in a beige chiffon Valentino dress she had worn many times before. Suddenly it looked as it love and marriage were far more enticing to Jackie than haute couture. Instead of buying snobby haute couture for her trousseau, she bought lots of fun clothes to wear at home or on board the Christina. Adolfo, the hat designer, was the first to sell Jackie his puffy harem pants, silk shirts and vests dangling with fake Turkish coins. The fashion, very un-Jackie, was typical of the new Jackie.

The number of guests you invite depends completely on the family of the bride.

You will be allotted up to half the total number of invitations but may be less if most of your relatives and friends are at a great distance. To most of them, announcements should be sent. Announcements are not sent to people invited to the wedding. As soon as the total number of guests has been decided upon, decide on your head usher (you have already chosen your best man) and on the minimum number of ushers you will need, one for each 50 guests is a rule of thumb. While not everyone invited to the wedding will come, approximately 75 per cent should be counted upon to accept.

If you and your ushers are going to rent formal wedding clothes (usual these days), allow plenty of time to make the selection and obtain a good fit. What you wear is determined by the degree of formality of the bride's costume. All the men in the wedding party, including the fathers, wear the same style of clothes that you do. Discuss the men's clothes with your best man and the ushers available and tell the others by mail or phone exactly what they will need and where these clothes are obtainable. It is the usher's responsibility for the rental of his clothes. Decide with your bride on the honeymoon. Make reservations and get tickets. Assuming that you have given your bride an engagement ring, order her wedding ring.

She should select it with you. If it is to be engraved. give the jeweler the information. Decide on your wedding gift to your bride. This is usually something for her to wear of permanent value, from a string of nexthing, fitted traveling case for" the honeymoon.

Your choice, of course, is dependent upon your means. Call for the engraved wedding ring approximately a month before the wedding. If you are to wear a ring, it is your gift from your bride. Delegate to your best man the matter of out-of-town guests of yours and any attendants who need accommodation. You are not responsible, however, for the cost of these unless you wish to be.

With your best man go over all of the requirements for the wedding, such as clothes, tickets medical and other papers. Put in one large envelope all tickets, papers necessary for your marriage and honeymoon. Some of. these will be given to the best man a few days before the wedding. In applying for your marriage license you and your bride may not have to appear together.

Give your gifts to your attendants about a week before the wedding. They may be anything you wish, but all ushers' gifts are alike, and the gift to your best man is something a little different and usually a little more expensive. With your best man make up a time sheet for the rehearsal, rehearsal dinner and time for ushers to be a at the church (an hour ahead of time). Decide on the minister's fee. Fairly, this should be in proportion to the cost of the wedding.
