Th tor wu aat oat to Europe several yean ago by ne of the Agriculture Isocletie of the country We think of Maarachnsett to examine and report upon the condition of the agriculture of Great Britain and the Continent. In the performance af thia duty he waa brought in close relationa with the leading agriculturist of Europe who, especial ly in England, constitute the most influential and poDahed portion of society. All of thia class seated to Tie with each other in their kindness and attentions to Mr. Cot-Mis, inviting, him to their homea and giving him all the information in their power in regard to the particular objects of his mission, and affording him at the, same time better opportunity of becoming familiarly and minutely acquainted with the domestic life and manners of the nobility and gentry than ia often enjoyed by ordinary travelers.

The observations ho waa thne enabled to make are embodied in the letters contained in the two volumee before as. These letters are evidently what they profess to be, familiar one written to friends on the spur of the moment, without any thought of future col lection ami publication and are full therefore of thousand gossiping details mingled with a great amount of useful information, and imbued with a freshness of natural feeliug. altogether making on of the most agreeable books we hare taken in along while. The most remarkable characteristics of the letter are the vein of pure, healthy sentiment running through them, and noth withstanding the minuteness of many details, ths scrupulous delicacy with which the writer has voided personal details that might be considered violation of private confidence The extract below giving an account of the writer' visit to Sir CbaV.cs at Trede far, fn Wales is hardly a fair sample of the let tare, bat it may interest some of our readers as describing the mode of Using at the establishment of an English gentleman of fortune in the country The house is an enormous pile, I should think more than two hundred feet square, with a large coon in ine centre; ana toe mushing and furnish ina; are all comfortable aa possible, and eleiraiit. Ia hi bear cellar there were onlv thirty van largo tierces and hogsheads, each of them containing several barrels apiece, and the large vaia containing nofsneaOe. Hi wine cellars were almost equally speeiou. In hi slaughter-house there were hanging; up eight sheep, four large hogs, and one large ox, and they brought in another to be killed the next day; to Bay nothing ol the salted meat in the dry-in eat-honse, and the Sue, pheasant, hares, rabbit, veoieou, baa a herd of four hundred deer in hia park, and kindly gave ms a side of venison for the ladle where I lodge, half of which i gave to them on Christmas day, and the other half I sent to the minister of the French Protestant Church, where inauaity attend in London. As be was disposed to show me every thing, he wa also kind enough to give me a list of his house servants, in the order of their rank, for they are quite as tenacious and observant of their rank as their superiors, and they numbered one hundred and eleven, to be dined in the servants' hall daily.

Beside that, they expected at Christmas, when their iruesta arrived. an addition from the servants they would bring, "which would carry them up to a much larger number, a lady seldom going without her maid ana a geaueniau witnout nis valet, besides their coachman, and oftentimes a postilion. Louis, May 9. 1849. Tax BlAS chard Rosbkbt at New Orleans is tiQ fresh in the memory of our readers. We are gratified to perceive by the New Orleans papers, that a police officer of that city has succeeded in recovering all the valuable drafts, notes, id fact all except tha money, which only amounted to $1700. Tba total amount lost by the plunder of the banking house, it will be recollected, was about $300,000.

How the, recovery was made, and how it happened that neither the thief nor th money were taken, tbe accounts do not say, but it is, suppose, on of the usual mysteries of police operations. American Baptist mtselouary Culo-n, Board of Correspondence of the V. Commercial Advertiser. May 16, 1849. At the afternoon session of th Board yesterday.

papers were read by th secretaries on different point connected witb the administration of mis. sioaary affairs, and referred to appropriate com mittee. 1 heae papers were prepared with a degree of deliberation quite unattainable by committees during the sessions, and greatly facilitate the labor of th committees to whom they are refer red, a walla of th Board and of the Union in their final action upon them. The papers read yesterduy afternoon were, "On the due gradation of missionary service." the practical object being to untold the proper order and the relative importance of the various kinds of labor, such as preaching. schools, DOCK.

Otc. Another paper waa "On the relative claims of missions to reinforcements." A paper "On the means of promoting the home work of missions in our churches," was, ou suggestion of the home secretary, relurred unread to a committee, with the design of bringing it before the Union instead ol reading it belore the Hoard. he home secre tary reported on the long mooted question of alter inr the constitution, so as to allow annual mem bership in the Union in addition to life member ships, that officer having been desired to address a circular to all the members of the Union and request their written votes. More than 1700 cir culars were sent out. 831 members returned answers.

413 voted in favor of the alteiation.and 419 against it. This report of the secretary was referred to a special committee. Various committees were announced at t'nii session. A large and most deeply interesting mis sionary conference was held in the evening. Thi Rev.

Dr. Sharp presided. In tbe coarse of some introductory remarks he made allusion to tbe great Christian orator. (Dr. Staughton) to whose voice the walls within which they were now assembled ouce echoed, and in so doing-gave a key note to the meeting.

The report ou the European missions of the Board was submitted bv the Rev. Or. Ide, of Philadelphia, and if the highest and most im pressive eloquence could have carried the Board by storm, the Greek mission would have been at once abandoned. Kav. Mr.

Hague, of Boston however, Wa unwilling to see the mission the victim of such a fate, and came to its rescue in a speech not less eloquent and impressive. He re terred to tne time when tne rencn mission was likelv to share a similar doom, and desired the Board to remember how the wisdom of continuing that mission had been vindicated by the blessing 01 uoa. 1 ne ureeK mission was no more pressed, no more hopeless, now. He referred likewise to the high character of tho missionaries employed on that held, and concluded with powerful appeal to the Board to carry forward that mission, it was followed on the same side bv Rev. Chasoi or Ministrt. A change in the English Cabinet is likely to take place. Recent advi ces speak of it as a movement soon to follow. 1 be Kassell Cabinet will give place to a Protectionist Ministry. The Morning Chronicle, a Whig journal, announces that the country will oon be governed by such a Cabinet, and the Bri tannia says, that this expression of opinion is enti tled to some weight, "as the Chronicle la likely to be well informed what party would he called to th Queen' Council's in the event of the dissolution of the present Cabinet, an event which can hardly be far distant.

Let it take place when it may, it must be followed, not by a change of men merely, by a change of principles and of system. In view ol llieae circumstances tture was un evident waul of a volume of more linv itej compass a hook which would come within the means of tho people generally and adapted not only for libraries, and the higher classes of society, but would bud its wuy into the midst of those moving in the humbler walks of life. To supply this want, the rresent work has been prepared. The endvavor has been made to compress within a brief compass, the principal events of the lifu of Mr. Adams, and the scenes in which he participated to portray the lending traits of character which distinguished him from his contemporaries.

It has been the aim to present sueli an nspect of the history and principles of this wonderful man. as shall Jo justice to his memory, and afford on example hich the youth of America may profitably imitate in seeking for a model by which to shape their course through life. This task has been admirably performed, and, though humble in its pretensions, we suspect that this biography, brief as it is, wit) give to most rea ders better, truer and more defined conceptions of Mr. Adams, his long and tllustrious services, the purity of his motives, aud his unfaltering demotion to freedom, than could be gathered from the larger and more elaborate work said to be in preparation. Such a work is, indeed, necessary for the proper elucidation of the history of our country during the long period that Mr.

Adams was a prominent actor on the stage of life, but this is the book for the people, and Gov. Seward, in finding time for its preparation amid his multifa rious public and professional duties, has rendered a most acceptable service to the country. For sale by G. U. Derst Co.

The ravages committed in Mexico by tha Indians must speedily arrest the attention et our government and induce some action. We know not whether these Indians reside wholly in Mexico or partly within our territory, but probably tbe latter. If so, we are bound by treaty stipulations to punish them for their aggression, and reduce them to proper subordination and good behavior. In addition to the obligations of good faith on this point, th safety of our own people demands prompt and efficient action. From the necessity of the case, the many thousands of our emigrating to California, must go in small and detached parlies.

In no other way can thev be sure of obtaining the requisite forage for their cat tle. They are therefore peculiarly exposed, ignor ant, as most of them are, of Indian warfare, to be cut off by outlying bauds of Indians, stimulated by their two strongest passions, love of bloodshed and plunder It is already re i or ted that tbe Apacbes and Utahs, two of the most numerous formidable tribes on our Southwestern frontier, meditate hostilities upon the emigrants, and there is great reason to fear unless the Indians ere over awed by the presence of a strong and imposing lorce among them, that the march of tha etni grants across the continent will be made memor able by many scenes of aavage massacre. If the government shall decide upon doing anv thing to repress these the forco sent into their country should be strong enough to act with energy. Auy half way or insufficient measures would be worse thau none, for our power would be estimated by the force we should send, and if small would inspire contempt rather than salutary jjeace, and eventually give rise to a war more pro tracted and expensive than the war with the Semi ooles in Florida. Although a cor respondent noticed this new steamer, which has just been completed here, generally, yet we believe we have not given a detailed description of her several part" and capacities. She is the second boat upon the lakes in regard to sise strongly and staunchly built, and well adapted to the business which she is designed, freight and passage in Gen.

The la dies' cabin has 3li berths, with an ante and two fami ly rooms.

There are two large steerage cabins, one forward and the other aft, with 10 large family rooms of 9 and 12 berths each. The main cabin which was designed by Capt. E. I'owkrj is one of the most elegant on the lakes. Its furniture, from the warehouse of J.

The Keistont State is to be propelled by a powerful beam engine of 500 horse power, manufactured in New Vork, and though not designed for naf boat, yet she will make as good average time as any other. Altogether the Keystone, is a splendid specimen of naval nrchi-tecturo. and well displays the skill of her designers and builders, Messrs. Hirmr.LI. ET Black's Patsht Firk Proof Paiwt, on Artificial Slate. We would call the attention of our readers to an advertisement in another column of this most singular and valuable substance. It is, perhaps, well understood it has heretofore been only black, and consequently was used mostly for roofs.

I 1 DLiKi nan tiisccverea another mine in the vicinity of the first, which i colored with red oxide of iron, giving to the substance a roost beautiful chocolate hue just Ihe fashionable color of the day, for the outside of the building, and as it is the natural color, it will never fade, but forms a complete stone coating on the brick or wood walls, thro' which not a particle of moisture can pass. The longer it remains on, the more solid and permanent it seems to become. Unless we are much mistaken in the character of this discovery, it will prove of vast importance. As long as we continue to construct our building of such perishable materials, it seems accessory to shield thsnj if possible from th ac tio" of the elements. Blaka's Patent Fir Proof Paint appear to be just tbe artid desired for this purpose-, and we ore assured that the teats to which it has been submitted hav "invariably produced the same result.

This singular substance is found in Sharon, Medina county, Ohio. When first discovered it was found below the secondary hoe stone rocks. It is soft and easily worked, but becomes holder by exposure to the atmosphere. When dry it is ground in a milt to an impalpable powder and mixed with oil for use. The following, on analysis, wr found to be its elements- Silica, 54 Alumina, 24.5 Protoxide of iron, 4 Carbon, 1 lime.

1 Water and loss, 3 100 Tho supply, we are iold, is abundant, and Mr. Clake is prepared 10 fill orders to meet a very large demand. If this substance fully maintain the character hich the tests, and the experiments in it for the past two years have given, we have no doubt but that its use will become universal. It ii cheap, and therefore economical and as ft performs the offices I of paint and of a preserver of buildings it proves it- me 11 nog wmcn nas oeen so long desired. Mr.

The Bank of Upper Canada own tbe opposition boats that ore now running against Mr. Ha Wilton's mail line, and one of each leaves Hamilton and Niagara daily ibr Kingston, via Toronto and other intermediate ports.

In some instances passengers have been carried the entire length of the lake for one shilling in the cabin and for nothing on deck.
