Felts Of Undsay-Schaub Newspapers JOHN Conrad becomes the fourth Earl Russell following the death of bis father, the third earl who Bertrand philosopher, mathematician, Nobel prize winner i literature and militant peace advocate. Presumably John Conrad Russell will retain the family second title, i Amberley, because he has no male heir. But the two daughters of the new Earl Russell are ladies of distinction. Their grandfathers were Bertrand Russell and Vachel Lindsay.

John Conrad Russell, a Harvard student and Susan Doniphan Lindsay, daughter of the Springfield poet, were married in 1946. The marriage, after two daughters, was dissolved in 1954. The first Earl Russell (17921878), Bertrand grandfather, was the third son of the sixth Duke of Bedford. A younger son, Lord John. Russell went Into politics, served in the House of Commons and in the Cabinet, eventually rising to be Prime Minister.

He received an earldom in 1861. Bertrand Arthur William Russell succeeded to the earldom hi 1931. THE HALLMARK Hall of Fame and NBC are calling Dr. Kildare. Richard Chamberlain, who played the role of the handsome young medico a half dozen years ago in a long-running TV series, will have the title role in a two-hour production of "Hamlet," no less.

Chamberlain has played "Hamlet" in England, the first American to try that role before English audiences since the late John Barrymore in 1929. OF Oh Yes AND THAT: Why do newspaper reporters continue to write, and copy editors continue to accept "pour" for "pore" in reference to reading, or stu- dying? Perhaps they read at breakfast, and pour coffee or syrup over their newspaper. Among the new books Is collection of reproductions of paintings by the Empress of Japan. Published by the Tokyo newspaper Asahi Shimbun which fives all proceeds to the Japanese Red Cross, the book sells 5,000 yen, or about $14. Thus far 80,000 copies have been sold.

When the beautiful blanket of snow melted off the front yard during that late-January preview of the inevitable "purty spell hi Febywary," we were reminded of the deplorable state of what we i call "the lawn." Next summer but It's always next summer, fall or spring. But this is a year we shall stay mostly at home, an even-numbered year. Last summer the garden and lawn reflected our absence from the premises, even from the country, for almost five weeks. Jimmy Durante's brief spoof of Johnny Appleseed on a recent television show sent us to the shelves to read again Vachel Lindsay's longish poem "In Praise of Johnny Ap- pleseed." The man who planted apple trees across the country was John Chapman (1775-1847). An excerpt from the Lindsay poem: "Long, long after When settlers put up beam and rafter, They asked the birds 'Who gave this fruit? Who watched this fence till the seeds took root? Who gave these They asked the sky And there was no reply.

But the robin might have said 'To the farthest west he has followed the sun, His life and his empire just Vachel Lindsay wrote so many poems in addition to "The Congo" and "Abraham Lincoln Walks a Midnight."
