Shaw, who has been the focus of controversy the last two days, was suspended from the team Longtime Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer received a two-year contract extension through the 2019 season. Beamer, 67, who is entering his 28th season with the Hokies, has a record of 266-132-4 with seven conference titles. After reports surfaced that North Carolina was investigating a possible hazing incident, cornerbacks Des Lawrence, M.J. Stewart and Brian Walker and linebacker Donnie Miles were suspended for Saturday's game against Liberty. Alabama senior linebacker Trey DePriest will sit out Saturday's game against West Virginia because of an undisclosed NCAA rules violation.

NBA: Clippers coach Doc Rivers agreed to a contract extension through the 2018-19 season. Rivers led the Clippers to a franchise-best 57-25 record in his first season with the club. New Cavaliers forward Kevin Love responded to criticism from Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, who questioned Love's defense and durability. "For Glen to say that, I just think that he should be focusing on the players that he just received," Love said on ESPN Radio, referring to the recent three-team trade that sent Love to Cleveland. Veteran guard Shannon Brown signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Heat.

NFL: Browns receiver Josh Gordon was suspended by the NFL for the entire season after his appeal was denied by the league. The suspension comes as a result of Gordon violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Rams coach Jeff Fisher remained angry over an ESPN report by Josina Anderson that dealt in part with the "showering habits" of defensive end Michael Sam. "I think it's unethical," Fisher told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"I think it's very, very unprofessional. Not only the piece itself, the content. The manner in which she did it." ESPN apologized for the story. NFL Network reported a long-term contract extension for Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant is imminent. Bryant is entering the final year of his rookie contract that will pay him just over $2 million.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton expressed certainty that his fractured rib won't prevent him from starting the team's Sept. 7 opener against the Buccaneers. The Steelers won't suspend running backs Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount for their marijuana possession arrests last week, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The Titans agreed to terms with defensive tackle Jurrell Casey on a four-year, $36 million contract extension, which includes $20 million in guaranteed money. The Ravens restructured the contract of starting cornerback Lar-darius Webb, reducing his 2014 salary-cap figure by $3 million.

Redskins owner Dan Snyder said he has "started the process" of entertaining designs for a new home stadium at a site to be determined. The Cardinals signed ex-Patriots defensive lineman Tommy Kelly. NHL: The NHL denied reports the league is planning to expand to Las Vegas, Quebec City, Seattle and Toronto. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told Canada's TVA Sports that expansion is "not in our plans. There is absolutely nothing new on that." The league hasn't expanded since the Blue Jackets and the Wild joined for the 2000-01 season.

SOCCER: A group of parents sued several soccer organizations, including FIFA, the sport's international governing body, saying they have failed to do enough about concussions among children. The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, says FIFA and other groups such as the American Youth Soccer League have not done enough to reduce preventable injuries from repetitive ball heading. Johanna Larsson sent another seed to the exits with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 upset of 21st-seeded American Sloane Stephens. On the men's side, sixth seed Tomas Berdych dismissed 2001 US. Reuters NEW YORK Chinese doubles specialist Peng Shuai supplied a shocking start to the second round of the U.S. Open by upsetting fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 6-4 on a hot, humid Wednesday. The doubles world No. 1 used piercing, two-fisted groundstrokes to put Radwanska on the defensive. On her third match point, her backhand crosscourt winner brushed the corner lines.

Radwanska, winner in the Montreal hardcourt run-up to the U.S. Open and a semifinalist at this year's Australian Open, saved a match point in the ninth game to hold serve for 5-4 and fended off another in the next game before Peng's last winner. Team owner Daniel Snyder told CSNWashington.com on Wednesday that he has "started the process" of entertaining designs for a new home field at a site to be determined. "Whether it's Washington, D.C, whether it's another stadium in Maryland, whether it's a stadium in Virginia, we've started the process," Snyder said.

"We are going to push forward. We've started meeting with architectural firms. We are in the process of developing because it is a long term that you do it." FedEx Field in Landover, which the Redskins now call home, was built in 1997. He gave no indication of when the project might be started and completed. "I think this region, not only this town, this region deserves a Super Bowl.

It ought to be here, it would be a fantastic accomplishment," Snyder said. "It's the biggest sporting event in the globe. It's the nation's capital, it's a no-brainer." Snyder knows how he'd like the new stadium to look and feel. "We've already seen some preliminary drawings and I'm going to be very retro with it," Snyder said. "It's gonna feel like RFK.

It's going to move like RFK. I love that. I actually asked architectural firms to do it and they said that they can do it. I said that I think the lower bowl sections are going to want to rock the stadium like the old days." SEAHAWKS: Former Dunbar standout Horace Miller was waived-injured Tuesday by Seattle. Miller told The Baltimore Sun that he expects to rejoin the team later this year after reaching an injury settlement and plans to do his rehabilitation in the Seattle area.
