in debt, Law' Vy Steven Scheuer and TV KEYi Haff Specials (8 p.m., KITV Channel 4 and KGMB Channel 9). CBS and ABC are not doing viewers a favor by scheduling two hours head-on dealing with the same issues prompted by Pope John Paul II's visit to the United States. CBS's examination of the state of the Catholic church and all that implies is titled "Catholics in America," with correspondents Mark Philips, Dan Rather and Lesley Stahl reporting. ABC's hour is titled "The Pope in America," anchored by Peter Jennings and reported by Bill Blakemore. Both will deal with the Catholic church's stand on such controversial issues as birth control, abortion, homosexuality and pre-marital sex, among others.

CBS Reports: The In-the-Red Blues (9 p.m., KGMB Channel 9). In case you haven't noticed, Americans are experiencing a bad debt crisis, causing the worst economic predicament since the Great Depression. CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl interviews experts in the economic field, including Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. L.A. Law (repeat; 9 p.m., KHON Channel 2) "Oy Vey, Wilderness." Little touches add up to a good human interest hour.

There's slimy Brackman plotting against a neighbor over dog poisoning, Arnold Becker anticipating hot times with a fashion model, and Kuzak defending a tuna fisherman whose boat is held by the IRS. Highly watchable fare. Hits and From Page B-1 misses From Page B-1 la Lansbury, is moving Wednesdays to Sundays begin-' ning at 7 p.m. Sept. 20, via KGMB.

"Growing Pains," a Tuesday fixture at 7 p.m., premieres, as" an hour-long special (everyone presumes it's the episode shoi-on Maui) but from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 18, a Friday. Then it switches back to Tuesday. "L.A.

Law" ought to sue the season's premiere doesn't arrive until Oct. 22, at 9 p.m. via KHON, thanks to baseball playoffs on NBC. Some new shows such as NBC's "My Two Dads," and ABC's "Full House" and "Once a Hero" won't be shown in this Island television forecast will have Dolly's uplifting spirit and wit, plus her sleek, trimmed-down figure. "Ohara," the Pat Morita detective yarn, will roll back to its designated Saturday night slot, from 7 to 8 p.m., in harmony with the nation; local programmers last season moved it to Tuesdays.

There'll be some significant day switches for some established favorites. Perhaps first and foremost is NBC's Thursday night hit, "Family Ties," starring Michael J. Fox. It moves to a 7:30 p.m. Sunday slot beginning this week, via KHON-TV Channel the premiere, however, is an hour-long special, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Similarly, "Murder, She Wrote," the enduring CBS favorite with the endearing Ange cliffhanger episode will contain footage not previously shown when the show first aired April 15. It's all a set-up for "Infinity and Jelly Doughnuts," the fall premiere set for Oct. 7. Hawaii's other on-location series, CBS-TV's Vietnam War-influenced "Tour of Duty," screens at 7 p.m. Sept.

24 via KGMB-TV Channel the kick-off is a two-hour special. Dolly Parton, who still has a home in Portlock, says hello to the world of variety and music when her ABC-TV series, "Dolly," premieres at 8 p.m. Sept. 27 via KITV Channel 4. The hour-long series won't be country-western, won't have guss-ied-up dancers and sets but it market.

Ditto, ABC's All may wind up on the cancellation list eventually, but Island- ers won't even get a chance to tune in and decide the if trates the mob as a street punk, breaking gang after gang at risk of his life. 16) "Beauty and the Beast," probing the symbiotic relationship of a female district attorney and a grotesque but compassionate "man-beast" who lives amid New York's subterranean tunnels, through which he races weekly to rescue her from villains. 26) "Frank's Place." An up-tight-Massachusetts college professor inherits a New Orleans Creole restaurant and a massive clash of cultures. Ayer. fair; Saatchi, good; BBDO, a hit. (Saturdays, 7 to 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 3 premiere episode; two previews, from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Sept. 19 and from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 26) "Leg Work," the story of a fe- John Ritter is "Hooperman." "Private Eye," in which an ex- cop takes over his murdered" broth- er's detective agency and teams up i with a street-smart kid to bust bad guys. Heavy rock 'n' roll sound track.

Ayer, Saatchi, good; BBDO, a hit. (Fridays, 9 to 10 p.m.; Sept, 18 premiere episode; preview from to 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13)' house with four grown children and their families. Rated fair.

(Wednesdays, 8 to 9 p.m., Sept. 16) "A Different World," starring Lisa Bonet in a spinoff from "The Cosby Show," in which she leaves the Huxtable household and goes off to college. Ayer. Saatchi, a hit; BBDO, fair to good. (Thursdays, 7:30 to 8 p.m., Sept.

26) "A Year in the Life," a family drama based on last year's mini-series starring Richard Kiley as a 64-year-old widower living in a large her death, because it cannot be determined which of them is her father. Ayer, good; Saatchi and BBDO, a hit. (Sundays, but not airing locally) "J.J. Starbuck," starring Dale Robertson as an eccentric Texas billionaire who drives a Continental convertible with steer horns on the hood as he helps people and solves male private eye from a family full of cops. A unanimously certified flop.

(Saturdays, 8 to 9 p.m., Oct. 3) NBC (KHON-TV, Channel 2) "My Two Dads." It will take several more seasons before the new Fox Broadcasting Network expands to seven nights a week of prime-time programming, but it's expected to reach three nights by the end of the 1987-88 TV season.

CBS or NBC FBC has spent the MAC' writer-producer of "Buffalo Bill." FBC's late-night talk show, "The Late Show," continues at 10:05 p.m. Monday through Friday nights with alternating hosts. So far FBC has decided to stick with that plan rather than replace the fired Joan Rivers with a single host.

Nobody expects that situation to last through the whole coming season, though. FBC also is expected to put some made-for-TV movies into production. KHNL's programming generally runs a week behind the network's, with the exception of the Emmys telecast. my's TV Hall of Fame specials when it outbid the other networks for the Emmys. The first is scheduled for Nov. 30. For the new season, "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" has been axed and will be replaced at 8:05 p.m. Oct.

3 by "Second Chance," a new sitcom starring Kiel Martin Street as a guy who dies and returns to Earth 40 years later. "Women in Prison." a sitcom about a woman who is thrown in the slammer by mistake, premieres from 8:35 to 9:05 p.m. Oct 18. replacing "Duet" That show moves to Saturdays, knocking out "Karen's Song," which will go off the air until further notice. Several other new shows will be used to help FBC launch a Monday or Friday night lineup, probably in the spring of 1988.

Among those shows: "The Nell Carter Show," a one-hour variety show hosted by the singing-dancing star, most recently in NBC's canceled "Gimme a Break." "Family Man," starring Richard Libertini as a comedy writer. An untitled soap opera from Gloria Monty, creator of "General Hospital." An untitled one-hour comedy-drama fronv Dennis Klein, BUFFET 9 111 111 1 I completing its weekend lineups and will go into the fall with established shows on Saturday and Sunday nights. Those shows are expected to be plugged heavily on the annual Emmy Awards telecast Sept. 20, which will be seen on FBC under its new multi-year pact with the Academy of Television Arts Sciences, the first time away from one of the big three networks. The Emmy telecast is scheduled to start at 8:05 p.m.
