THE HARTFORD COURANT SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 2016 C7 SP RTS BASKETBALL HONORS Stewart Wins Her Second Wooden Award the UConn women's basketball team is set for Sunday in downtown Hartford. The parade will lack off atlp.m. at the state Capitol building and will be followed by a victory rally outside the XL Center around 1:30 p.m. The parade route will begin at the Capitol on the corner of Trinity Street and Elm Street It proceeds north on Trinity Street through the Soldiers Sailors Memorial Arch, turning right (east) onto Jewell Street, then left (north) onto Trumbull Street, and ending at the intersection of Asylum Street and Trumbull Street. The rally follows.

An Associated Press report is included. the year award, having led Division I men's players with 147 three-pointers made. Stewart also was selected Associated Press player of the year for the third time and won the Wade Trophy as the WBCA's national player of the year. On Tuesday, she helped lead the Huskies to their fourth straight, and record 11th, national championship by scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the win over Syracuse. Stewart was chosen most outstanding player of the Final Four for the fourth straight season.

As a freshman, she had predicted that the Huskies would win four straight national tides. "I don't regret it, but it wasn't easy, that's for sure," she said. "It was the perfect ending," Stewart said. "We had a goal coming in as freshmen winning four national championships and now as seniors we did that," she said before the awards ceremony. "We did what we wanted to do.

And it was a lot of fun." On Thursday, Stewart is expected to be the first overall selection in the WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm, where she will join former Huskies Sue Bird and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis. "I would say that it's a pretty good chance that she's going to do at the next level exactly what she's been doing," Auriemma said. "And obviously it's going to be more difficult. Seattle is quite different than the team she's playing on. The players that they're playing against are quite different The entire life is different.

And that takes some getting used to. "I like the fact that if everything holds true and she goes to Seattle that she'll be around some really good people. I know Sue will take great care of her, and Jewell Loyd is a great ldd and is going to be a heck of a player, and Kaleena is up there. And there's a lot of people she's familiar with. And they'll help her grow." Parade On Sunday A victory parade and rally for By JOHN ALTAVILLA jaltavillacourant.com Breanna Stewart's season of championships and personal accomplishments concluded Friday with her selection as winner of the Wooden Award for the second time.

This is the fifth time one of coach Geno Auriemma's players has won the award in 13 years. Maya Moore won it in 2009 and 2011 and Tina Charles was the winner in 2010. The award goes to the top male and female players.
