When a newsman asked Bryant whether there could be party harmony with the chairman operating independently from elected officials, Bryant replied, "I think you have answered your own question." Bryant has charged that the present party leadership was ineffective in raising campaign funds and winning elections. The governor noted that the Republican Party was having a similar fight over the party chairmanship between chairman G. Harold Alexander and challenger Charles Holley of St. Petersburg.

"They are becoming distressingly Democratic," he observed. Widener said he took the job for a limited period only, and was now stepping down to return to managing his personal businesses.

TALLAHASSEE (AP) The new dean of the Florida House is Rep. Joe H. Peeples 48-year-old Venus cattleman. Peeples attained the rank with the defeat of Rep. Bernie Papy of Monroe County in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

Peeples has served 20 years consecutively as a state representative from Glades County. He barely nosed out Rep. Charles Usina of St. Johns County for the title of senior house member. Usina began his legislative service the same year as Peeples but he skipped the 1955 session of the Legislature.
