Tailback Steve Owens bucked the Washington Stale line for the final two yards in a second quarter Oklahoma touchdown. The two fumbles gave the Maroons scoring opportunities inside the Georgia 20, but Slate's Sammy Johnson ruined one chance by fumbling on the 15 and Tommy Corbett ended another bid by fumbling on the nine. End Larry Kohn and linebacker Happy Dicks each recovered a pair of fumbles for the Bulldogs, and Stanfill grabbed another. Mississippi Slate, which tossed only two passes and hit on none, was no match for the Georgians, who shared the SEC crown last year ana are co-favorites with Alabama again this year.

However, the Maroons threw up a strong detense untu me 17-point outburst by Georgia in the fourth quarter. Linebacker D. D. Lewis stopped Georgia on the Maroons' two in the third quarter, and another Georgia drive was halted on the Mississippi State 21 when Jim Courtney picked off Paul Gilbert's pass. Moore, shaken by a jarring tackle by Lewis on the last play of the third period, hit on four of eight passes before he left, and kept the Georgia offense moving with his scampering runs.

Moore gained 51 yards running on 11 carries, with Jenkins gaining 51 on 14 tries. Leading rusher for the Maroons was Johnson, who gained 33 yards on 12 carries. Mississippi State gained only 66 yards rushing and nothing passing while Georgia rolled up 278 yards on the ground and 94 in the air. (AP) -After quarterback Terry Ilan-ratty finally got warmed up, he triggered top-ranked Notre Dame to a 41 to 8 trouncing of California's Bears in the fighting Irish football opener Saturday.

The Irish were held to a 7-0 first quarter margin as Hanrat-ty failed to click with his famed battery-mate Jim Seymour, but the star passer got Notre Dame rolling with a 17-point second quarter and the rout was on. Ilanratty flipped two touchdown passes, a 14-yarder to Rocky Bleier and a 9-yarder to Seymour, and scored himself on a 12-yard keeper before he left in favor of Coley O'Brien late in the third quarter with Noj tie Dame ahead 31-0. O'Brien hit for a touchdown on his very first pass, a 14-yard shot to another second stringer, Bob Gladieux, for a 41-0 Irish lead early in the fourth quarter. Although Hanratty, in the first quarter, connected on only four of 12 tosses, his running for 26 yards on three keepers, set up Notre Dame's opening touchdown, a two yard smash by Dan Harshman. Kicking specialist Joe Azaro booted a 23-yard field goal to cap a 74-yard drive at the out set of the second quarter for a 10-0 Notre Dame lead.

Azaro also kicked a 21-yarder for a 34-0 lead in the third period. California's game Bears, who opened last week with a 21-13 scored with 2:49 left on a one-yard smash by Troy Cox climaxing a 49-yard drive in 11 plays. California's Bears converted with a two pointer on a pass to Cox from sophomore quarterback Randy Humphries, who replaced harrasscd Barry Bronk at the start of the second half with the Bears trailing 24-0. Humphries twice ignited the Bears against the fierce Irish, whose 270-pound Kevin Hardy led a defense which produced four interceptions of California passes. The Bears completed only 5 of 28 passes for 45 yards.

Humphries got the Bears roll ing a 40-yard drive to Notre Dame's 40 on seven plays starting the second half, and his passing and running dominated California's late 49-yard scoring march. Hanratty wound up with a 15 for 30 passing record, good for 208 yards. He hit Seymour six times for 69 yards, but the star split end dropped several toss es, including a 13-yard shot when he was wide open in the end zone in the second period. However, Seymour's twisting circus catch between two Bear defenders on his 9-yard scoring reception in the third quarter marked a flash of his 1966 skill. As expected, Notre Dame's running game was below last season's form.

Hanratty was the leading Irish rusher with 46 yards on seven keeper carries Dushney with 49 on 10 tries. California was led in rushing bv halfback Paul Williams with 49 yards on 15 hauls and Hum phries with 45 on 14.
