(AP) -Quarterback Kim King engineered two late touchdown drives to lift Georgia Tech to a 17-10 victory over surprisingly stubborn Vanderbilt Saturday night in a football opener for both teams. King broke up a 3-3 tie late in the third quarter with a six- game as head coaches for Tech's Bud Carson and Vander-bilt's Bill Pace. Vandy held Tech to only first down in the opening period and took a 3-0 lead on Tom Meriwether's 36-yard field goal after driving from midfield.

In the second quarter, King tailored Tech's first sustained march and got close enough for Tom Carmichael to kick a 29-yard field goal. The key play of the drive was King's 13-yard scramble for a first down to Vandy's 25. He completed five passes on the drive. May scored the last touchdown after Gary Davis had completed a 25-yard pass to Bob Goodridge on a 60-yard drive. Athletic directors Bobby Dodd of Tech and Jess Neely of Vandy, retired from coaching and off the sideslines for the first time in a combined 79 years watched passively from the press box.

The Vanderbilt showing brought roars of approval from the partisan crowd, plagued by seven consecutive losing seasons. The Commodores, with a few long gains and an alert defense, were within reach of victory until the final minute. King completed 10 of 14 passes for 102 yards, and Davis, on Vanderbilt's only touchdown march, hit on two of three for 58 yards.
