Constables Batterton and Murphy Saturday arrested J. W. Weinett, recently employed as watchman on the bridge, and Walter Grace, charged with appropriating a fine buffalo robe from Dr. J. Tap- born recently.

The robe was found in Weinett's room. The men were given a hearing which resulted in the discharge of Grace and the binding over of Weinett in the sum of $300. Weinett claims to have bought the robe from a colored man for $2 one night whim out sleigh riding. He was taken to Edwardsville Monday morning. Two years later he came back to UpperAlton, and again became an instructor at the college. In the score of years of his second connection with the faculty he held numerous positions, his latest being that of piofessor of classics. He was scholar of deep and diversified learning, an expert in geology and master of the dead languages, aud it is said that with one was the best mathematiciau in the United States.

His services have been invaluable to Shurtleff. Ue was one of nature's noblemen, and his death will bring sincere sorrow to the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves a wife and four children, Dr. Claries Fairman, of New York City; Mr.Willis L. Fairman, of Upper Alton; and Misses Alice and Agnes Fairman, to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.

Dr. Charles Fairman arrived from New Yoik City Wed nesday evening. The funeral was Sunday afternoon, from the Upper Alton Baptist church. The church was filled with the many friends that the venerable scholar had made during his useful life. It was accident Tuesday while out i which resulted falal.y.

The revival meetings closed Friday night. Seventeen conversions were made. Mabel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.

Teipel, fell Monday evening and broke her arm. Freddie Hedger who has suffered for the past several weeks with a broken leg will undergo a surgical operation. The limb will be amputated. Saturday morning at 10 o'clock occurred the funeral of William Benbow at the church. The services were conducted by Ruv.

Starwalt. The fnneral was largely attended. The remains were in- brother, Louis Williams, is at her bedside. Chailes ffinspetcr, of St. Louis, and Miss Laura Mueller, of this city, will be manied Sunday, February 24th, at the home of tho bride.

The young people of Christ Episcopal church presented a drama to a large audience, Wednesday evening, at Temperance Hall. The first part consisted of a Irama in three acts, entitled "Out of his Sphere." All participants did well, es- to The sparrow killiug will most likely come to an end on March 1st.
