The plot of "The Night of the Generals is variable sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, sometimes dull-but Kirst's examination and damnation of the German officer is the main theme.

The author best puts this idea forth in the words of Major Grau, a police officer investigating with a kind of religious fervor two brutal murders that German generals are suspected of committing. Grau says of the officers: "They pretend to be the high priests of the Prussian-German tradition, but a lot of them are just miserable hypocrites who let millions of soldiers think they see Hitler as an embodiment of that tradition. They've turned into stooges and bootlickers." -LARRY DUHE 1 1 8 EAST GARDEN ST. According to Billy James of the company's Information service "Linda Lloyd is one of the most excit ing new singers to come along in years." He said after Linda's single records become a hit they plan an album of her songs. Linda has a lively, uptempo style in "I'm Gonna Love That Guy and she backs up the new number with a standard "A Cock-Eyed Optimist" from "South Pacific." Shorty Rogers and Ed Kleban, considered among the best ar rangers in the "pop" field, were assigned by the company to do Linda first arrangements. The Lloyds moved to Holly wood after the long-term con tract was signed. It looks as if "Shortin' Bread" has turned into a feast for Linda Lloyd. I OPEN 1 P.M.

SmJ people! 'I'm Gonna By PAT LLOYD When fifth grader Linda Hug-gins dabbed black shoe polish on her face and sang "Shortin' Bread" at a Warrington Junior High School show 42 years ago she didn't dream it would be the beginning of a musical career that Columbia Record publicity directors now predict will be among the brightest in the business. "I'm Gonna Love That Linda's initial record for Columbia, was released nationally this week and has been selected by "Cash show business pub-records of the month, lication, as one of the top records of the month. The 23-year-old singer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank-lyn Pryor, 1413 E.

BLOOD ON THE STAR by Aaron Marc Stein; Crime Club Selection, Doubleday 182; $3.50 Texas and Mexico are the setting for this story of a hard-boiled yet soft hearted man who picks up a hitchhiking youngster.

The teen-ager turns out to have a gun, plenty of cash and murder in mind. The story is recounted in a terse, tough first person style and moves swiftly to a "justice triumphs" conclusion, fexans won't like Stein's story because he shifts literary barbs at the stales like Indians shot arrows during the early settlers days. PAT LLOYD. HONORS MOSCOW (AP) The Tass news agency reports a scholars' group in Leningrad has prepared a monograph on Shakespeare in connection with his 400th anniversary. It is titled: "Shakespeare's great and unfading popularity in Russia during the past 2Mj centuries." $1.50 PRICES: $2.50 Mystery story fans will welcome the new crop of crime stories: REPORT FROM ARGYLL by Allan MacKinnon; Crime Club Selection, Doubleday; 174 pp; $3.50 When a London newspaper gets a report from their correspondent in the Scottish Highlands about a Russian agent in the area the editors interest is piqued.

However be fore they can get the conclusion 'Bosnian' Is Called Nobel Book Bosnian Chronical, by Ivo An- dric. Translated from Serbo- Croatlon by Joseph Hitrec, Al fred Knopf, 430 $6.95 This is one book of a trilogy that was the main consideration of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters in awarding Andric the Nobel Prize for literature in 1961. The novel centers around the life of a French consul in the provincial town of Travnik from 1807 to 1814. That may sound like dry read ing but it is not. Such is the power of Andric's writing that both the age and the land come alive.

Unlike his Serbian contempo rary, Milovan Djtfas, Andric does concern himself with con temporary ideologies in this novel; he is a writer instead of a polemist. Born in Travnik, Andric par ticipated in the Serbian revolutionary movement, later received a doctorate in history from the University of Gratz, and joined his country's (now Yugoslavia) diplomatic corps. He spent World War II under house arrest in Belgrade and devoted himself to writing.
