She was the daughter of the late Miguel Lara and Dulce Maria Alvarado. The oldest of eight children, she was responsible for taking care of her you-i-inger siblings.

Growing up on a cattle farm instilled in her the values of hard work and sacrifice. At 15, she met her future husband, Pablo. It was love at first sight. After a five-year courtship, they married and enjoyed a 50-year marriage. Hilda's journey has always been unique.

In Cuba, she graduated from a military college for women, a rare event at the time, and was senior year First Cadet. Later, she taught first grade and home economics in Cuba's rural schools. After the imposition of the Castro regime, Pablo became a political prisoner. She sought refuge for him in Mexico and stayed behind with her daughter, Marilda. In 1960, the family reunited in the United States.

They settled in West New York, New Jersey, where Hilda faced the hardships known to every non-English speaking immigrant. She worked in factories and ultimately became a seamstress making original designer samples in Manhattan's garment district. She was a proud member of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. Hilda and Pablo relocated to Hartford in the mid 70's to care for their grandson while their daughter attended law school. She provided love and support to her daughter as she pursued her law school and corporate career.

The Gandaras opened New York Fashions in 1975, a retail clothing business operated successfully on Park Street for 30 years. The business thrived as a result of their hard work. Hilda quickly became a pillar of the Latino business establishment and a highly respected member of the Latino Community. When the Park Street Corridor was facing adverse conditions as a result of drugs and violence, understanding the hardship and threats faced by merchants and community members, she took a leadership role in reviving the Spanish American Merchants Association (S.A.M.A.), giving it a powerful voice in resolving significant challenges. She served as chair of S.A.M.A for three years.

Hilda was a driving force behind the renaissance of Park Street. She was a devoted grandmother to her only grandchild, Paul Alfonso. In her last years, she also found joy in her two great-grandchildren Alex and Ava. Hilda is survived by her daughter, Marilda Lara Gandara and son-in-law, Scott O'Keefe; her grandson, Paul Alfonso and his wife, Kristen; greatgrandchildren Ava Lara and Alexander James; sisters Olga, Aida and Mirtha; brother Luis; numerous nieces and nephews, friends and Maria Luisa Cruz, a special family friend.
