C6 THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 2014 THE HARTFORD COURANT SP RTS CENTRAL FOOTBALL UCONN Manuel On Va. Tech Job: 'I Am Not A Candidate' Blue Devils Officially Welcome Rossomando UConn's affiliation with the American Athletic Conference and Manuel's desire to get into one of the power conferences that are guaranteed a shot at the College Football Playoff. "The writing is on the wall," Roberts said. "Manuel is trying to get in while the getting is good." Manuel, a 1990 graduate of Michigan where he lettered in football and track and field, came to UConn from the University at Buffalo, where he was AD for six years. He has been at the center of many projects at UConn, helping to navigate fundraisingthat is financing the construction of the new basketball facility and the hiring of new hockey and football coaches.

However, UConn is in the midst of an uncertain athletic future as a charter member of the AAC after being rejected by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia Tech, a football powerhouse that has produced players such as Michael Vick, is in the ACC and remains a key player in the world of college athletics. The Holdes have more all-time wins than any other program in the ACC. Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, which seats more than 66,000, is considered one of the nation's loudest stadiums and in 2005 was recognized by Rivals.com as having the best home-field advantage in the country. It would be quite a step up from Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

Manuel, considered a rising administrative star, helped Buffalo regain its footing, particularly academically. When he arrived four programs football, men's basketball, wrestling, and baseball were far below the NCAA Academic Progress Rate cut score of 925. By the end of 2009-10. all four teams posted a four-year APR rate above the cut score. He has faced the same challenge at UConn, where the academic standing of its men's basketball team led to its exclusion from postseason play last season.

Manuel signed a five-year contract with UConn in 2012, with the option for a two-year extension at the discretion of the university. He is paid a base salary of $450,000 a year and has been eligible for a $100,000 performance incentive annually if certain academic and athletic goals are achieved and is eligible for $100,000 in deferred compensation to be awarded at the conclusion of his five-year contract Athletic Director Denies Radio Report By JOHN ALTAVILLA jaltavillacourant.com For the same reasons UConn hired Warde Manuel to be athletic director in 2012, the university likely understands others will view him just as favorably when looking for one of their own. But on Wednesday, Manuel denied a Roanoke, Va, radio report that said he was high on the list of candidates to become the next AD at Virginia Tech. "I am not a candidate, have not been interviewed nor have I been contacted by Virginia Tech about its director of athletics position despite some recent media reports," Manuel said in a statement released by UConn. "I am very happy as the director of athletics at UConn and look forward to continuing to work with President Susan Herbst, my coaches, staff, student-athletes, donors and fans to enjoy a high level of continued success in athletics at UConn.

I wish Virginia Tech all the best in their search to replace one of the legends in our business, Jim Weaver." Weaver, the Holdes' AD for the past 16 years, is retiring at the end of the year because of multiple health concerns, including an 11-year battle with Parkinson's. Tuesday night, a user posting on a website devoted to conversation and coverage of Holdes athletics thekeyplay.com intimated that Manuel would be on a short list of six for the job, along with Chris Plonsky Texas women's director of athletics; Michael Kelly, chief operating officer at College Football Playoff; Whit Babcock, Cincinnati AD; Jeff Bourne, James Madison University AD; and John Ballein, an associate athletic director for football at Virginia Tech. The report originated from a radio talk show hosted by Greg Roberts on WFIR in Roanoke, Va. The subject of the show, which aired Tuesday, was the future of Virginia Tech athletics. The Manuel connection was discussed in the midst of a nearly 55-minute segment.

Roberts claimed that Manuel, 45, had become a candidate in large part because of UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN PETE ROSSOMANDO is the new football coach for Central Connecticut. He has a career record of 42-13 and led New Haven to three consecutive Northeast-10 Conference titles in 2010-12. all-purpose yards a game last season for Central (4-8). Rossomando, 41, signed a four-year contract Additional terms were not available. Mclnerney was paid $138,320 in 2012, according to the Yankee Institute's online database.

Rossomando, who will be introduced at a news conference Friday, met a few players Wednesday. Because New Haven students were on break as his negotiations played out with Central, he couldn't address the team he was leaving. He did record a video to mail to every player. "Once you set emotions aside and look at the job and the opportunity with people I've grown to respect at Central, it just made sense," Rossomando said. "It's a higher level, a better conference with an automatic qualifier to the NCAA playoffs.

This is the right thing to do." In a news release, Central athletic director Paul Schlickmann said, "He emerged from a very deep and competitive pool of candidates by virtue of his exceptional success as a head coach, the clarity and substance of his plan, his reputation as a man of character and ultimately his passion for the job." Rossomando said he is likely to hire several members of his New Haven staff. His recruiting will be rooted in Connecticut but will extend throughout the Northeast. Central awards the NEC maximum of 40 scholarships. A native of Staten Island, NY, Rossomando played football at Boston University in 1990-93. He has Northeast Conference experience, having served as an assistant at Albany for seven seasons.

Rossomando and his wife, Jessica, live in Oxford with their three children. "I'm exhilarated," he said. "I'm full of energy and ready to get going and get this ship pointed in the right direction." By MIKE ANTHONY manthonycourant.com Pete Rossomando talked Wednesday about generating more fan interest in Central Connecticut football and might have done that with his first comments about the team he is taking over. "You're going to see a spread, highflying offense," said Rossomando, who was officially announced as the 13th Central coach in program history. "You're going toseealotof Rob Hollomon.

He'll touch the ball a lot of different ways. Central is blessed with a lot of skill-position guys, and I think we'll score a lot of points." A new era is about to begin at Arute Field, just like one began in 2007 at DellaCamera Stadium. Rossomando spent six years and five seasons as coach at the University of New Haven, which restarted its football program after a five-year hiatus. The Chargers became the class of the Northeast-10 under Rossomando, who won three conference titles and was 42-13. He was a three-time NE-10 coach of the year and the 2012 Division II coach of the year.

At Central, Rossomando replaces Jeff Mclnerney, who resigned after eight seasons. Mclnerney led Central to NEC championships in 2009 and 2010 but was 10-23 the past three seasons. Central allowed an average of 35.4 points last season. New Haven (8-3) outscored opponents by an average of 40.2 to 24.8 last season. Rossomando's teams at New Haven averaged 35.9 points scored in his 55 games.

"Defensively, we'll be a team that runs to the ball and plays with a ferocity you haven't seen in a while, and one that gets after the quarterback," Rossomando said. "On special teams, we'll treat every ldckoff return like it's an offensive play, trying to take it to the house every single time." Hollomon, who will be a senior, was the FCS leader with an average of 189.17 SCOREBOARD AP Women's Top 25 AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE EASTERN CONFERENCE ATLANTIC GP OL SL PTS SUPER BOWL XLVIII DENVER VS.
