Now of all the wonderful ihint's in our knowledge, the most wonderful is that sagacious capital has not already constructed this road. MARTIAL Tb Christmas Ee Ball at Fort Meade. Fort Meade, Dec. 26, 1879. Tu Hie Kilter of Hie Daily It is with pleasure that I ait down to tell you of one of the most enjoyable events that has ever taken place at this post: A ball given by the two fire com panies of the fort, company of the First infantry, and company of the Seventh cavalry, Wednesday evening, Dec.

24. I do not remember having spent a more pleasant Christinas Eve in years. The boys in both companies deserve great credit for the manner in which they conducted the preparations and also the way in which everything passed oif under the auspices of a splendid committee of ar rangements. The hall was EUXiAXTI.Y TKIMMEO with evergreens, a dozen of the post flags decorated the walls, and it was brilliantly illuminated with fifty lights. The chandelier in the center of the hall was very pretty and the light was so mellow and yet so distinct that every motion and figure, the very color of a sparkling eye, could be readily distinguished in any part of the room.

Immediately after tattoo," which is at 8 o'clock iii the evening, the ball was opened with the "Grand March," in which alwut SKVENTV OUTLES PARTICIPATED. This was followed by the regular routine of dunces until nearly midnight when we sat down to as bounteous and luxurious a supper as could have been spread on such an occasion in any part of the states. Every one seemed to enjoy the good things so lavishly provided and, judging the expression of the faces around me, every one and everything seemed as merry as a whole squad of marriageable belles. The tables xoaned beuoalli the weight of the dain ties with which they were loaded, aud the cooking did credit to the culinary artist who prepared the epicurean array. THE MXINli-HOOM was trimmed and lighted to rival the dancing-hall, and 1 doubt if Queen Mab's tiiry bower could have surpassed the arches, wreaths and festoons of evergreen which twined their beautiful lengths everywhere.

The music was furnished by the Seventh cavalry string-band, and needs no comment; for we all know it would be impossible for them to put forth anything but strains that arc semi-divine. It really seemed that when the enchanting hcart-and-heel-stirring tones of Mr. Eixenburgcr's violin fell on a person's car it was im possible for him to keep his feet upon the floor. We were pleased to note AMONli THE l-ADIES l'liKSKXT some very tine waltzein, among whom may he mentioned Mi's. Ferris, the Misses Scott and the Misses David.

The party did not break up until nearly dawn, and would not have done so then but that the programme had run out and the voice of Mr. Tuttle, who lid the calling oil', began to falter. Al though he says "it's not so," everybody knew he was becoming weary. In conclusion, I will say that this party will be one long remembered by tlioso who shared in its enjoyment and, as I heard a lady remark, it was "simply immense." A. A.

THE DIVISION OF DAKOTA. Under this head that is beginning to cam stereotyped in our territorial journalism, the Bismarck Tribune of Dec. 5, which only reached us last Sunday night, contains this article: "While the Bismarck Tribune and associates are trying to figure a division so as to make Bismarck the capital of a queer-shaped territory com- osed of the Hills and the north end of Dakota, the puperM of the southern end have a confident tone when speaking of a division on the 40th parallel. Dead-wood l'ress. The BL-marek Tribune has never fa-Tored such a scheme, and has always regarded it as impracticable.

No set of men with sufficient sense to entertain an intelligent, opinion on any subject would evo expect congress to entertain, for a moment a proposition to create a territory in the form spoken of. When it looked as if the division of Dakota was impossible because of democratic supremacy in both houses of congress, well knowing that the democrats would never consent to lay the foundation for two republican states so long as they could prevent it, the Tribune favored the admission of Dakota as a state, but that was killed by the Dakota legislature. Now, however, the politics of the country are so shaping that it will be possibk after the next general election to divide Dakoui, and in the territory there is no' heartier advocate of division, and on the forty-sixth paral- lei, than the Bismarck Tribune. Be-, cause it was impossible to secure admission, and equally impossible, at the time, to secure a division on the forty-sixth parallel, in order to keep the subject warm and attract attention to Dakota, the editor of the Tribune, who was linn in Washington, secured the introduction of a bill for a division of the territory on a north aud south line, which received favorable attention from the senate committee, but this scheme did not receive favor in any quarter of the territory, and was -talked to death in no time. And this move, which was not expected to succeed, and only made for the purpose stilted, is the only break in tne Tril une'i record for division on the forty-sixth parallel.

Whether Bismarck will be the capital of the new territory, should one be created, remains to be seen. Bismarck people will take their chances. The Tribune favors division on the forty-sixth parallel, and if the people of the Black Hills want a second division creating a new territory from portions of southern Dakota, Wyoming anil Montana, the Tribune has no objection, but all must see that the causes rnicn nave inaue a ueuveen southeastern Dakota and the Black Hills desirable are passing away, and that these two sections will soon be united by one or two lines of railway aud by the rapid occupation of the hitherto unsettled country lying between them. Should Dakota be admitted as she is, it is true that northern Dakota would be a natural ally of the BJack Hills, in any conflict between southern Dakota and the Hills, because the two sections have interests and sympathies in common growing out of direct trade, while northern and southern Dakota have no common interests and no common sym- pathies. 1 NOUTHKKX CONNECTION.

railroad projectors, with the Golden Hills as their objective point, are legion. The whole locomotive-pushing fraternity seem to have waked up at once to a perception of the mag- nitude of interests to be developed, the immensity of resources to be opened up, the profitableness of the business to be secured by the road whose iron-horse shrieks forth the first salute to our crags -of royal ore. In the course of an article on one of these schemes, the Bis marck Tribuno says: As a source of national development and individual aggrandizement railroads have been selected as favorite schemes for the profi table and permanent investment of redundant capital. During the past prises engaged in has been so extended as to "already raise the price of iron from $33 a ton to over $o0. The mania for this kind of investment has become so great as to induce schemes for their construction on the frontier, in the interior and indeed everywhere.

Now it is well known that the Black Hills are filled with gold inexhaustible; that great quantities of it are being taken out; that populous cities arc being built there; that the country in and around them is of wonderful agricultural importance and is being fast, settled and cultivated, and the transportation from the states to the Hills is simply immense. It is also known or should be known by all intelligent capi- lints tf.at ttin Nnrtl i must make it try far the most valuable transcontinental thoroughfare in the world, that the road has been, completed to Bismarck on the great Mis-, souri river, within two hundred miles of the Black Hitti, and that its construction is being pushed forward to completion as rapidly as capital and labor jean accomplish it.
