Steve Slayden threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns night to propel Duke past Virginia in an Atlantic Coast Conference game. Slayden's third scoring pass, an 8-yarder to tailback Julius Grantham, put the Blue Devils ahead 20-10 early in the fourth quarter. Virginia, 1-3 overall 0-2 in the ACC, got a 28-yard field goal from Jeff Gaffney to pull within 20-13 with 5:54 to play. But Duke, 3-1 and 1-0, managed to eat up all but 27 seconds of the clock on running plays and Virginia never got. beyond its own 35 in the closing moments.
