Gopher faces Irving Thursday, October 1, 1970 GRAND PRAIRIE DAILY NEWS Page 5 Gopher team coach Buddy Copeland was wearing a long face Wednesday. "I wish we didn't have so many people hurt," he said, shaking his head. The bad thing is, he's right. The young Gophers are missing some key players for tonight's clash with the Irving team in Irving. Like Richard Bostic, for instance.

The 185-pound tight end's play against Sunset last week was outstanding, but he is listed as "doubtful" with a "bad leg," according to Copeland. Also out are left half Tim Harris on offense, who is suf: -fering from the flu, and Randy a linebacker who did a bang-up job on the Bisons last week. Cope- "jand says Clinkscales is "defi- 1 Tiitely out. He has a leg infec- tion and won't suit up." Moving into Bostio's tight end spot on offense will be Scott Stalets, a 173-pounder, and subbing for Harris will be David Lawson, whose spectacular fingertip catch beat Sunset's squad last week, 21-14. On defense, 170-pound Scott Taylor will move into Bostic's linebacker position, and Phil Androtta will switch to Clinkscales' other linebacker spot.

Steve Westmoreland will take over Androtta's regular guard spot. The young Gophers will be shooting for their third win and in a row after an opening loss to Arlington Heights. Irving's squad is undefeated, and Copeland says "that bunch has played together for two years now, since junior high, and they are really well-drilled." Presley vs. Presley Daily News Photo LISTEN UP, 7th grade coach Mark Hinson watches intently as his team runs a play against Lee's 7th grade. Preparing to go in the game are, left to right, Brent Graham, Steve Camp and Mike Swaim.

Adams won the contest, 26-6, boosting their record to 2-0. Jefferson, Lee tie By LEHMAN HOLDER Daily News Sports Editor Mike Presley against Mike Presley? You read it right. Friday night in the Gopher Bowl, two Mike Presleys will oppose each other. One, of course, is from Irving, and the other is the Grand Prairie quarterback. And both are exceptional football players, who spearhead their respective teams' offensive attacks.

Currently the Irving Presley is ninth in District 7-4A rushing, with 183 yards on 43 carries, just two yards behind the Gophers' Don Marshall. The Irving runner is called "a good runner" by Grand Prairie coach Bill Yung, and Yung adds, "they depend on him. Presley's their best running back and he is the workhorse on their offense." The Gophers, meanwhile, came out of last week's win over Sunset in good shape, and will field the same starting lineup with the possible exception of Ron Mabry at fullback. The 150-pound senior has been dropped by the flu this week and hasn't practiced. "I don't know if he'll be ready Friday night or not," Yung said.

"Stewart (John David) will start at fullback if he isn't." STARTING LINEUPS Thomas Jefferson's 8th grade scored a third quarter touchdown to tie Lee's 8th graders, Inconsistent offense No.l headache for Cowboys By JAMES DAVIS the opportunity to have a two game lead over all its divisional foes after Sunday's game at St. Louis Cowboy coach Tom Landry isn't to prepare playoff tactics. commented at his -weekly press luncheon Wednesday that Dallas was off to its slowest start in nearly seasons and that he was very happy to be 2-0 at this stage of the race. "Our offense is very inconsistent at this point," said Landry. "We've always gotten off to a pretty fast start but this isn't the case.

We lack the excellent performance level that we need from every player. We can not put together sustained drives and mostly we are stopping ourselves. We are gaining yardage but it's not impressive. "Here again it's execution," said Landry. "Our offense hasn't been in control these last two games.

Our defense has taken control and that has won the ball games for us. Against the ter teams we are going to have to have the ability to move the football and not lose it." The head Cowboy mentor said the team was still fum- bling, it's getting trapped and dropping some passes. But it's cut the major errors to their lowest point of the year and the main factor is veterans i playing four quarters. Holding penalties are on the decline i but some of the specialty teams are falling. There were no field goals last week, Dallas punted short several times, i and had an almost sure wiped out when rookie Duane Thomas fumbled a kick: off return.

think I'd prefer for him not to try to change hands running full speed," said Landry when asked to comment in Thomas' run. "I don't see now anybody could have kept from scoring with all that blocking." 3 Key Factors Landry found three encouraging facts about the 28-10 win over New York, and Bob Hayes wasn't one. "The defense turned the game around," said Landry," in the second half. "Cliff Harris came through with the type of game we've been waiting for and now our whole secondary has more confidence. Then third, Ralph Neely had his best game at guard.

If his progress continues we'll have the strongest guard set up ever." The same starting folks will appear before the TV cameras in St. Louis and Neely is the one likely to see the most action in the group of quarterback Craig Morton, receiver Hayes and the former Oklahoma guard. Landry said Hayes had a fine day catching the ball but he still did not match up to the performance level, particularly in the blocking. "Hayes worked hard last' week and in the second quarter we gave him a chance to show us what he could do," said Landry. "He'll continue to get the opportunity to work as will Neely and Morton, although Craig's case is entirely different since he's a quarterback.

"Craig's slump is a combination of mental as well as physical conditions," said Landry. "His operation was serious but 1 think it'll have no real effect. He started throwing the ball bad, got down on himself after we lost a couple and he started to aim the ball. Now he's turning the ball loose in practice and his accuracy will return. His throwing got worse against New York and Kansas City and he had to work it out.

He'll just have to stay mentally right and be prepared when chance comes again. And he'll have that chance. No doubl about it." Landry also feels the front defensive line has not applied the necessary pressure, although tackle Bob Lilly was credited with 25 escapes last week and he was double teamed 23 times. "As a group they haven't reached the level of last year," added Tom. "Larry Cole had a fine game Sunday, George Andrie looked better last week than the previous two and he was playing after the death of his father.

Friday night, Jethro Pugh had a man in front of him who could contain his escapes. One week you'll find someone who can handle your type of escapes and that happened with New York. But we still need that all out rush." "You've got to get out there early in the first seven games," added Landry. "If you are not within striking distance then, well, you can only be a team that finishes strong and very few remember those type." Dallas fans do not! All-Stars city champs After a six-day delay, due to wet grounds, the Women's Softball League got the final games of their tournament over Tuesday night. The first game of the night pitted the Golden Nuggets against Ranchtown to determine who would face the Dai- worth All-Stars for the championship.

Ranchtown took the first game, 13-5, handing the Nuggets their second loss and knocking them out of the double-elimination tournament. Louise Madigan led the attack for Ranchtown, getting a single and double. Barbara Palmer and Beth Sandifeer collected a pair of singles apiece. It was a different story when the Dalworth AHStars took the field. In five innings, the Stars rounded the bases 20 times for a 20-7 victory over Ranchtown.

Terressa Rollins got five hits. 6-6, in a thriller Wednesday night. Danny Freeman scored Lee's touchdown, and Robert Simmons dove in from the 2-yard- line for Jefferson's tally. Lee jumped off to a quick 6-0 lead in the first quarter, but couldn't hang on. Behind the running of Keith Markwardt and Buster Pettitt, Adams 8th grade whipped Andrew Jackson's 8th graders, 14-6.

Markwardt threw to end Curtis Depue for the lone two- point conversion in the contest. And Ricky Clark plunged in from the 5-yardline for Jackson's score. Grand Prairie Offense TE Russell Munsch, 168. LT-Marshall Warder, 173. LG Steve Saunders, 183.

I'd say that we must control the ball as much as we can and try to stay away from fumbles and mistakes in order to win." The Gopher coach emphasized strongly the toughness of Irving's defense. "They have the best-looking defensive unit I've seen this year," he stressed. Irving may be 0-3.

The Irish manhandled Purdue to the awesome tune of 48-0. The Buckeyes made short work of upstart Texas 56-14 and Texas woke up in the second half to beat a good Texas Tech team, 35-13. Now, for a little forecasting for the future.

Notre Dame with its pro style offense would like another shot at Texas. So, get the tickets early. Ole Miss was scared by a good Kentucky team that didn't bounce back after its defeat of Kansas St. week before last. Score: 20-17.

Penn State, Missouri and Tennessee took their lumps and dropped the Top Ten habit. Colorado made a shambles of the Nittany Lions, 41-13, and in so doing broke the Penn St. win skein. Air Force impressed by soundly outplaying Missouri in their own back yard, and Southern Cal, in retort to the previous week's tie with Nebraska, completely wrecked Iowa, 48-0. Stanford and Michigan are still undefeated, winning their games, and Arizona ST continues to impress with a solid thrashing of Kansas State.

Auburn vs. Kentucky If Auburn is flat after last weeks' defeat of the Tennessee Vols, Kentucky will administer a startling defeat, which is more than not, likely to happen.
